You know what I'm talking about.

Introduced in RSE, the marking system allowed you to mark your Pokemon with any or all of up to 4 different shapes, for whatever reason you feel like. In DPPt, they upgraded that marking system to six: Circle, Triangle, Square, Heart, Star, and Diamond.

With all those 6 marks, you'd think they'd be useful for something. Or they could go ignored for years and the trainer would rely just on memory.

But do you guys use the marking system at all, in any fashion? And if so, how do you use it?

I actually started using the marking system in DPPt, and I find it incredibly useful. I use each of the six marks for a different purpose, to help me remember things. Here's what I use them for:

Circle = This Pokemon is used exclusively for breeding (usually for a nature or ability, or possibly even a 31).
Triangle = This Pokemon is EV trained.
Square = This Pokemon does not list me as the OT in the game that it's currently living in.
Heart = Used for variable purposes. in Diamond, the mark meant that the Pokemon was 100% legit.
Star = This Pokemon is shiny. (Kind of a no-brainer, I know, but I still use it.)
Diamond = Used for variable purposes. in Black, I use it when I have multiple children at level 1, and am considering which one of them to EV train. in Diamond, it was used for those Pokemon who had nicknames that all had a certain theme.

I use it also!
Here's my system:

Heart: Means I have trained it and it is my best of that species of Pokemon
Star: Like you, this marks shiny pokemon...
Triangle: This Pokemon came over GTS/GTS Negotiations
Circle: Doesn't have a purpose in 5th Gen. but in 4th, it was used to mark Pokemon from Pearl.
Diamond: Meant is was from Diamond in 4th gen, but nothing in 5th...
Square: Means the Pokemon is foreign and can be used in the Masuda Method.

Also on special Pokemon like my Deoxys from GameStop (was the first one given away in my City :D)
I will mark them with all but heart, and once it becomes the best I have, it will be given the heart also.

I actually use the marking system for my Pokemon with a 31 in an IV. I don't have too many of them, but it's great to sort breeding wise (plus there's one for each Stat).

Circle = HP
Triangle = Attack
Square = Defense
Heart = Special Attack
Star = Special Defence
Diamond = Speed

dmaster out.

I only mark Ditto and Magcargo with a Heart. It's for breeding. Ditto to breed and Magcargo has Flame Body/Magma Armor to Hatch the eggs faster. I use it in my Platinum version only because I have the most Pokemon in that version( I even had to release some to make room for new ones when all my boxes were filled)

Yeah, this. I'd like to keep all of my 31s seperate from everything else. And it's cool seeing 5 marks on it when you know each mark means it has 31. :D

A lot of the time, I just mark pokemon that I'm going to be using next time I play, e.g going to ev train, breed. Then, if I forget when I come back on, I look at the marks, then I remember what I'm going to be doing with it.

No. That sounds just plain weird.

...So I don't go off topic, I just use it for giving Pokemon perfect stats with my action replay (One code makes it if you triangle mark it, it gets perfect stats).

Circle = From a friend
Triangle = Pokemon from my dad
Square = never used
Heart = My favorites
Star = Special in any way (shiny, event...)
Diamond = never used
