Writing PMD: Explorers of Time - PokéBeach Edition! Final Chapter! Help Me Decide The Next One!

This Chapter made me laugh my butt off. I wasn't expecting how to be portrayed in the series as Chatot, but I honestly wasn't expecting this. Keep it up!

If you were paying attention to the boring tutorial, you'd have seen it's the team's badge that does all the magic stuff of teleportation.
Also, concerning exp, you just get more if you use moves instead of just using the A attack.

Good chapter, keep it up, etc etc etc.

Admittedly, I could certainly pay more attention to some of the game's in-universe explanations for game mechanics... but they're so corny that it's hard to take seriously. :p

Chapter 3: ITP: Pokémon are named after different Pokémon

The next started just like before. WPM barged in our room to wake us, we ran out to have our morning meeting and cheer, and then Tails clucked his tongue at our noobishness and led us upstairs to find a job for us. However, this time he led us to a different side of the room and a different board.

<Keeper> Hey, what gives? This is a different bulletin board than yesterday!
<Tails> Yep! You see, this bulletin board is full of.... OUTLAWS.
<Ominous Music> *dun dun dunnnnn*
<Keeper & Athena> :O!
<Tails> They've all committed crimes, and as such, they have a bounty placed on their heads.
<Athena> So, we get to be bounty hunters too, eh? Sweet.
<Tails> Yep! If you manage to catch one of these bad boys, you get a nice reward.
<Keeper> Ohgod, that sounds terrifying...
<Tails> Oh, don't worry, just because someone is an outlaw doesn't necessarily mean they're a mass murderer or anything, though some of them are. But there are all ranges of outlaws, some being horrible, some just being petty thieves or whatever.
<Keeper> Even a petty thief sounds like he'd be too dangerous... :\
<Tails> Oh Arceus, you are such a wimp. *sigh* Zyflair!
<Zyflair> Yup, yup! *huff*

A Bidoof came up the stairs at Tails's call. This must be Zyflair. He seemed out of breath, but eager to help. Probably a new recruit saddled into the duty of helping us out.

<Tails> Zyflair, these are the new recruits we just hired, Keeper and Athena. Keeper and Athena, this is Zyflair, another apprentice.
<Zyflair> 'Sup?
<Keeper> Yo.
<Athena> Mornin'.
<Tails> Could you please show them around the town and get them geared up for a bounty job? Make sure Keeper buys fresh underwear.
<Zyflair> Sure thing!
<Tails> *flies off*
<Zyflair> YES FINALLY
<Athena> ... are you that happy that Tails is gone? >_>
<Zyflair> Nope, I'm happy that there's finally newbies that are a lower rank than me! I was the last person that joined before you.
<Keeper> Does this mean you're going to give us a hazing or something.... D:
<Zyflair> Nah, I'll just show you around. Follow me!

Zyflair led us back downstairs to the lowest basement floor. On the left side of the room, a Croagunk had set up a stand with a giant cauldron full of some kind of neon purple fluid and a giant Croakgunk statue as the backdrop.

<Zyflair> This is BigfootAUS! He, uh.... does something, I guess. I dunno, he's always stirring that cauldron and cackling madly; maybe he's a witch?
<Athena> Seems legit.
<Zyflair> Over to the left is the mess hall, and to the right are the rooms, and that door is IA's office... but I guess you guys knew that since you've been eating and sleeping here.
<Athena> Yeah, but then, I'm kind of used to people explaining obvious things to me, so whatever.
<Zyflair> In that case, let's go out to town!
<Athena> Well, that's actually new to me. All I've seen is the beach. Lead on!

And so Zyflair led us on, back up and out of the tent and down again to a town that I've somehow miraculously never seen until now.

<Zyflair> This is Treasure Town!
<Athena> It's got a, uh, unique name at least.
<Keeper> My favourite town. *_* Over there is Duskull Bank! And that over this way is the Electivire Link Shop! On the other side of the river is the Kecleon Market and Kangaskhan's Storage!
<Athena> Why does everyone have a tent or stand or building that looks like themselves? Is this entire Pokémon world full of narcissists?
<Keeper> It's just part of the fun!
<Zyflair> Yup yup! Welp, seems like you know the town pretty well, so you don't really need a guided tour. I'mma head back to the guild, so feel free to wander around a bit and come back when you're ready to start your job.
<Keeper> Oh, yeah, bounty, right... >_> We'll be back soon, I guess. Thanks for your help!
<Zyflair> ^_^ *flees*
<Keeper> Let's go explore the town, Athena!
<Athena> Sure, wynaut.
<Keeper> We need to make sure to go to the Kecleon shop before we go back no matter what. Totally not because it's a plot trigger or something. Just, because, uh, you know...
<Athena> It really is a plot trigger, isn't it?
<Keeper> ... yes. ._.;

Keeper and I explored the town, chatting with a few of the Pokémon we came across. We met quite a few other guild members, too, including a Corphish named Luispipe8, a Sunflora named Teal, and a few other 2-'mon exploration teams. There were more buildings than those Keeper had pointed out to me, all with a similar Pokémon design, but with no one there. On the far left side of town, there was a clearing and a cliff overlooking the ocean. When we had finally taken a look at everything else in the town, we went to took a look at the wares available at the Kecleon Shop and trigger the plot event.

<Athena> 150g for 3 rocks, 25g for an apple... 800g for a gummi? I picked one of those up off the floor in a cave! You're killing me.
<Kecleon> No haggling!
<Athena> That 2000g that I thought would make us rich is starting to look like chump change...
<???> Mister! Mister!

I looked over to the side and saw a Marill and an Azurill running up the street towards us.

<Kecleon> Oh, hello Porygon-X, Kecleon-X, my fine little budding customers. How can I help you?
<Athena> So, it's a Marill named Kecleon and an Azurill named Porygon? What is wrong with the parents in this town?
<Keeper> Dude, you can't make fun of people's names, that's racist.
<Porygon-X> One Apple please! ^_^
<Kecleon> Of course!
<Kecleon-X> Thank you! *they both walk off*
<Kecleon> They're brothers, you know. They shop for their mother since she's ill.
<Athena> That doesn't seem like a super important plot thing.... either they must be important characters, or something bad is going to happen to them and trigger an adventure.
<Keeper> Man, you're going to ruin the surprise for everyone...
<Kecleon-X> *runs back over* Mister! Mister!
<Athena> Yep, here it comes.
<Kecleon> Something wrong, kiddo?
<Porygon-X> There was an extra apple!
<Kecleon-X> We didn't pay for this many.
<Athena> ..... *faceplant*
<Kecleon> It's called a gift, kids. Enjoy it. ^_^
<Porygon-X> Yay! Thank you! ^_^ *walks away and trips, drops apple* Ouch!
<Athena> Here, you dropped this, kid.

As soon as I handed the kid his apple back, my head started pounding and I was overcome with a powerful dizziness. There was a flash of light, and then darkness. I heard someone crying for help... and then I was back, standing in front of Kecleon's shop, Porygon accepting the apple from my hands then running off to get back to his brother.

<Kecleon-X> Come on, let's go find that item we lost!
<Porygon-X> Hurray! *they both leave*
<Keeper> Cute kids, but... is something wrong Athena?
<Athena> You didn't, uh, hear anyone shouting for help just now, did you?
<Keeper> Nope.
<Kecleon> We didn't either.
<Athena> Are you sure, really? It sounded like it was Porygon-X...
<Keeper> Maybe you're just disappointed because the plot point here ended up being lamer than you'd hoped?
<Athena> Maybe.... :\

We ended up buying an Escape Orb from the shop in case of emergency and then headed back in the direction of the Guild. When we reached the other half of town, we saw the brothers again, this time chatting with a Drowzee, so we walked over because we're nosy.

<Kecleon-X> This guy is King Arceus! He's going to help us find our lost item! ^_^
<Porygon-X> He's so kind and helpful. ^_^
<Keeper> Wow, that's totally great for you and not suspicious at all!

As the brothers left, King Arceus followed and brushed up against my arm accidentally, causing another dizzy spell. This time when the darkness came, another scene floated in front of my eyes... KA and Porygon-X... and Porygon-X was in danger! KA was threatening him and he called for help, and then.... and then my vision came back and everything was back to normal. I was standing in the town and Keeper was staring at me, a look of concern on his face.

<Keeper> You okay there, buddy? o_o;
<Athena> Dude, look, this is going to sound crazy, but just then I had a vision of the future: something bad is going to happen to Porygon-X at the hands of that Drawzee. We need to go rescue him!
<Keeper> You'll forgive me for being a bit skeptical....
<Athena> Look, buddy, you're in a game where time-shenanigans are to blame for creating a series of procedurally generated dungeons all over the world, and you're going to question my perfectly acceptable visions of the future?
<Keeper> But KA looked like such a nice and totally not evil or suspicious Pokémon!
<Athena> ... :|
<Keeper> Besides, even if we wanted to go off on our own, we shouldn't. We're apprentices now! We need to do what the guild wants us to do or they'll kick us out. So let's just go back, ok?
<Athena> Fine, fine.... *grumble* >.>

And so we walked back towards the guild, my grumbling the whole way. As we went, I stopped and inspected a sign post. It includes an arrow towards "Exploration"; go figure. We went north towards the guildhall, back downstairs, and met up with Zyflair by the bounty board.

<Zyflair> Are you guys ready for..... ADVENTURE?!
<Athena> Sure, hit us up with a good bounty.
<Keeper> Just not too scary of one, please.... :<
<Zyflair> Don't worry, I'll find you one that's nice and lame....
<ALARM> WEEEEOOOOOWEEEEEEOOOOWEEEEEEOOOOOO
<Athena> Ohshi- what's that?
<???> Stand clear! Updating listings!
<Keeper> Oh Arceus, what's happening I don't even D:
<Zyflair> Dude, it's just updating, chill.
<Athena> Updating? Feels more like an earthquake...

Suddenly the bulletin board flipped over.

<Keeper> Did you see that? It flipped over!
<Athena> Keeper, master of the obvious.
<Zyflair> Yeah, the boards are on rotating panels so they can be updated easily. Shining Raikou, a Dugtrio, is in charge of updating the listings.
<Athena> Raikou the Dugtrio.... right....
<Zyflair> He tunnels to and from the guild. That's the shaking we just experienced.
<SR> Update complete! Stand clear! *flip back*
<Zyflair> Alright, we've got some new baddies now. Hold on while I pick you out a good one.
<Keeper> ... o_______________________________o;;;;
<Zyflair> Something wrong?
<Keeper> Athena... look at that Drowzee on the left there... it's KA! He's a wanted criminal!
<Athena> You know... at this point I could probably rant about speciesist profiling and talk about how that just because a Drowzee is wanted for a crime that doesn't mean that that Drowzee is automatically KA... but in this case, it works in my favour to going and helping out those brothers, so I'm just going to keep my mouth shut.
<Keeper> We need to go save Porygon-X!
<Athena> Sure!
<Zyflair> Wait, where are you going? ... Guys? ... Hello? :<

Keeper and I rushed back to the ground level and found Kecleon-X at the crossroads by the signpost.

<Kecleon-X> Ohgod, you guys.... KA took Porygon-X off somewhere alone.... and now I can't find them anywhere! I need an adult! D:
<Athena> No, what you is need is AN EXPLORER TEAM!
<Keeper> Which way did they go?
<Kecleon-X> Over here! In the direction of "Exploration"!

Kecleon-X led us off to the right and in the direction of.... surprise, a mystery dungeon called Mt. Bristle. It looked suspiciously similar to the place I saw them in my vision. Which basically meant that it looks like the other dungeons we were in except less water and more rocks. The Pokémon in this dungeon were tougher and more plentiful than before, but my battle tactics had improved as well. I was continually frustrated by our small inventory, sometimes eating things specifically so I could fit something new in our bag, but fun was had regardless.

At least until we reached the 9th floor when we were summarily surrounded and poisoned. We both passed out and woke up back at the dungeon entrance with all of our money and possessions stolen.

<Athena> Wow. That's lame.
<Keeper> I told you these Pokémon were bad.
<Athena> Remind me to actually use the bank and storage thing next time we go to town.
<Keeper> Will do!

With a sigh, I brushed myself off and we headed back into the dungeon. Thankfully, I soon learned that we hadn't lost all our items, just some of them, which was something of a relief. Still, we were bound and determined to make it to the end... and also to explore all the nooks and crannies to find new items to replace the ones we lost and work our money horde back up a bit.

Meanwhile on B10....

<Porygon-X> So, uh, Mr. Nice KA.... where's my item?
<KA> Ehehehehehe....
<Porygon-X> Mr. Nice Man? :<
<KA> No lost item here, boy....
<Porygon-X> ... D:!
<KA> Look, I tricked you down here to climb into that suspicious-looking hole for me. There's treasure in there, but I can't reach it, so you need to go in there and bring it out for me.
<Porygon-X> *shivers in fear*
<KA> Look, just do what I say and then you can go home, ok? Otherwise, there will be... trouble.
<Porygon-X> Help! Help! I need an adult! D:
<Keeper> No, what you is need is AN EXPLORER TEAM!

Just at the right moment, Keeper and I jumped in like heroes and posed as a team.

<Keeper> Stop being a jerk, you big.... jerk!
<KA> >.<
<Athena> We are TEAM AWESOME!
<KA> ... an explorer team? :\
<Keeper> And we're here to take you in!
<KA> Dude, are you... trembling?
<Keeper> No, it's a, uh, medical condition. >_>
<KA> Ha! You're probably just a bunch of newbies. In fact, you're the most pathetic exploration team I've ever seen.
<Athena> Well, we can still take you down. >:|
<KA> I'd like to see you try!

KA rushed for us and immediately used a move that put Keeper to sleep, narrowing down his competition. I countered by setting off a Smokescreen making it hard for HA to see and attack me. His moves kept fire off into the cloud while I beat him down with Embers. Finally, KA was KOed and the battle was over.

<Keeper> Don't worry, Porygon-X; you're safe now!
<Porygon-X> Oh golly cheese whiz, guys. I was so scared. ;~; But I'm okay now that you're here!
<Athena> Come on kid, let's get you home.

We restrained KA and teleported back to the entrance with him and Porygon-X, and suddenly 3 Pokémon appeared, a Magnezone surrounded by a couple smaller Magnemite! The Magenzone flew (hovered?) over to us.

<DNA> ZZZT! I am DNA, the primary officer in this reagion!
<Athena> Nice to meet you, sir. *salute*
<DNA> ZZT! Thanks to you, we can arrest this jerkwad. You have the gratitude of myself and my fleet.
<Keeper> Aww, shucks, just doing our job.
<DNA> ZZZT! The bounty for the capture of this Pokémon has been sent to your guild. Happy hunting in the future! \o/ *hovers off into the sunset*
<Porygon-X> Brother!
<Kecleon-X> Brother!
<Porygon-X> WAAAAAAAAAAH! I was so scared! D':
<Athena> Oh, come on kid, couldn't you have kept a lid on it for 5 more minutes. >_>
<Kecleon-X> Don't worry, bro, you're safe now!
<Porygon-X> *sniffle*
<Kecleon-X> Athena, Keeper, thank you for your help.
<Porygon-X> Yes, thank you!

We said our goodbyes and Keeper and I headed back to the guild, hoping to reap our sweet, sweet rewards. Tails was waiting for us by the bounty board.

<Tails> Yo! Got your bounty reward back.
<Keeper> Are we rich? :D
<Tails> .... nope!
<Keeper> D:
<Tails> But the guild thanks you for your efforts and rewards you with 300g and this larger inventory bag!
<Athena> Woohoo!
<Keeper> But I wanted the full bounty.... :<
<Tails> Now, get some good rest so you can go out and earn yourselves 10% of another reward tomorrow! :D *flies off*
<Keeper> *grumble* Couldn't they make it at least 20%... *grumble*
<Athena> Well, could be worse, could be 5...
<Keeper> Well, regardless, it's all thanks to you and your dream that we were able to save Porygon-X. I don't think I would have been able to face that guy otherwise...
<Athena> Looks like my dizzy vision was true future sight after all.
<Keeper> And you're not even a Psychic-type!
<Athena> Oh well, let's go grab dinner.

We went off to the mess hall and chowed down on some delicious food, then relaxed and chatted a bit before heading back to our quarters. As the evening progressed, the wind grew louder and louder, and soon we could hear rain spattering against the windows. By the time Keeper and I got back to our room, it was a full-blown storm.

<Keeper> Wow, this is a full-blown storm!
<Athena> ...
<Keeper> Heh, kind of reminds me of the night before we met. There was a big storm then, too.
<Athena> Must be that time of year.
<Keeper> Speaking of which, have you gotten back any of your lost memories yet?
<Athena> Nope.
<Keeper> Well, not much to be done about it I guess. Might as well get some sleep.
...
<Keeper> Psst, 'Thena, you awake?
<Athena> ... *snore*
<Keeper> You know, you're pretty special. I've never met a Charmander who had visions of the future before. Of course, I've never met any other Charmander before. And I haven't ever seen a human who's been turned into a Pokémon before.... but then, I've never seen a regular human either. Do you think they could be connected? Anyway, you're pretty special. Or your completely crazy.
<Athena> ...
<Keeper> Though I guess it could maybe also be related to the time shenanigans that are causing all the bad Pokémon and dungeons and stuff. Did I tell you that that's probably related to the Time Gears? That's pretty important plot stuff right there, so you might want to write it down, and make sure it's capitalized.
<Athena> *rubs eyes* Fine, fine, I'll grab a pen...
They say the Time Gears are hidden in secret places around the world. Like in this very specific forest, underground lake, and volcano lair that I'm picturing in my head right now. These things are so important to the plot, it's not even funny.
<Athena> I'm writing it down, yes...
<Keeper> Don't forget to add that they look like snowflakes. I wonder what happens if a region loses a Time Gear?
<Athena> Something tells me we're going to find out.
<Keeper> I guess time would stop happening, or something. Some kind of disaster anyway. But it's super important to make sure they're not disturbed, which is why they're all left in remote locations and ignored. Even like a super big jerk wouldn't mess with them!

Meanwhile, in a very specific forest that's earlier similar to the one Keeper pictured in his head and has an object the same snowflake-like shape, a Pokémon sneaks in....

<???> Mwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, the first Time Gear is miiiiine....

Team Awesome:
Athena:
Lv. 12 Charmander
Keeper: Lv. 12 Totodile

Player Notes:

Ahahahahaha, I left my 3DS plugged in on sleep mode overnight because Chapter 3 automagically started without giving me a save option and I didn't want to go too far without starting the next chapter. So I whipped open my 3DS, read the line about WPM waking us up, and then immediately got a save option. Go figure. :U

Yes, yes, yes, I blacked out again. Laugh at my noobishness all you want. It was also Keeper who blacked out, not me, so blame him. Basically, we were on the very last level before the boss and I was poisoned and we had no poison berries to I was heading to the WT in the room by the stairs and we got ganged up and because I was poisoned and low on health I was letting Keeper do almost all the fighting, not realizing at first that he had run out of his moves and was using Struggle and I was slowed so he died before I could Berry him.

At first I wasn't planning on including the loss in the story, but then I thought I had lost all my items, and considering that I had just been complaining about item management, I felt I ought to bring it up, though I did change the circumstances a bit (because going all the way back to the guild and sleep and yada yada just felt so ridiculous). Then I realized that I didn't lose all my items, just like half of them, so that was nice.

Is there a rhyme or reason for which items you lose? It is just like the last page or a random pick or specific things or what? We did lose all of our money, though, which was kind of lame. I'll have to remember to use the Bank before next dungeon, and maybe storage, though I'm still at the point where almost all of the items I have are useful, so eh. Is there any reason at all for me to keep money on me when I'm not buying things, or should I Bank it all before dungeoning each time? Seems kind of lame to have to put in and take out money a lot, but OH WELL.

In general, though, I'm getting better at combat and such. I'm actually starting to use Y to maneuver, and getting better at fancy moves and such. Would have been nice to know ahead of time that moves regenerate for boss fights, but oh well, lesson learned. I've actually found that I like some of the non-attacking moves (Athena knows both Growl and Smokescreen), because they let me get the XP bonus for using a fancy move without using up all the PP of my stronger attacking moves, which I've found that I prefer to save for some specific enemies, especially ones that slow and poison. It's still a balancing game, but I'm getting better at it, at least.

Also, boss was super easy. :U I guess I was just more prepared this time around...

THESE CHAPTERS ALL FEEL SO LONG. But there's not really a good middle stopping point. I hope you all don't mind.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

From what I know, you do lose items randomly, although I wouldn't bet my head on it. Concerning money, you don't get to buy that much in general, so just store them in the bank; if you ever need anything, you'll probably have a pretty big pile of cash in there. You can keep some on you if you want in case you run into an in-dungeon Kecleon Shop, but that's for later on. It's still early for you.
Oh, and when you get poisoned, head straight for the stairs. You don't have to explore EVERY room on each floor anyway.

Start stockpiling key items like Reviver Seeds, Max Elixirs and Apples; you'll need them in the tail-end of the story. Kangaskhan Storage starts out rather small, but max storage increases as you rank up. Prune your Storage at times to get rid of undesirable items and sell them to the Kecleon Bros. for some extra Poke.

Then to prevent loss of Poke, send it to the Duskull Bank and you should be okay. Granted you will have some growing pains, but you should do fine in the long run.

<Keeper> Did you see that? It flipped over!
<Athena> Keeper, master of the obvious.

Believe me, later on, exploring every room won't be as appealing. I know that exploring everywhere and talking to everyone is RPG rule no.1, but if it gets to the "pull trash mobs just for the sake of pulling trash mobs" part... Well, I'll just let you see for yourself.

It's already backfired on me a couple times, including causing that death today, but we'll see how it lasts.

The first couple of dungeons (Beach Cave, Drenched Bluff and maybe Mt. Bristle) don't really punish you for exploring every part of the dungeon floor.

As you progress through the storyline, however; the dungeons will punish you with Monster Houses.

And if you don't have a floor sweeping move, or a move like Thunderbolt (which sweeps the tiles all around the attacker), Monster Houses can easily become a nightmare.

Not to mention that the dungeons get bigger and more maze-like as you progress, filled with enemies that can take several hits to KO, and the game doesn't allow you to stay too long on one floor before it blows you out of the dungeon forcefully.

Well, at least they make the dungeons challenging, I'll give them that much. So far it's been pretty forgiving and mostly just "spam A". Except, you know, for the whole part where I died.

You can "set" moves in which case you'd be spamming L and A at the same time. :p

Yeah, I figured out setting my 1st attempt of the Drowsee level and played around with it a bit. I had "Growl" set for most of my 2nd attempt, since I liked spamming it to get the XP boost, and then I would manually use Ember/Scratch for the poisoning/slowing enemies to save PP on those moves. Probably wouldn't have bothered being as PP cautious as I was had I known that my PP would refill when I reached the boss, but oh well. >.>

Athena, eventually the northern desert will make you hate RPG OCDness...

Also, how are you liking the music? In my opinion, it's some of the best in all of nintendo.
