Ruling Poison

Hi, I have a really dumb question but I'm a new player
When a Pokemon is poisoned, it says you put damage counters between turn is it like the ex. 1 or 2

Ex.1: my turn -> put damage counter -> opponent's turn -> put damage counter -> ETC.

Ex.2: my turn -> opponent's turn-> put damage counter-> my turn -> opponent's turn-> put damage counters.

Poison happens in between turns. For example's sake, lets say you go first and play a Hypnotoxic Laser. You play HL->opponent's Pokémon takes Poison damage->opponent's turn.
