Adding on to what SheNinja said, its basically someone saying something, then backing away from it once the player is caught out. Or, an action that is caught out.

E.g.

Me: "CAMO, YOU SUCK AT WEREWOLF. IF YOU EVER FIND AN ENTIRE WOLF TEAM, I'LL JUST LIKE TOTALLY MODKILL MYSELF!!1!"

Camo: "I deduct, with my opinion, facts and actions that the wolf team is Red Rain, Shocker and James86134."

Me (end game): I never said anything about mod killing myself. How dare you tell me to kill myself!"

Although that isnt an ingame example, it can still be used witht eh same theme.

Backpedalling:
Backpedaling is when you pedal backwards on a bicycle, frequently for the purpose of applying a brake. In mafia, townies should constantly be on the lookout for scum, and should never apply the brakes in their quest for scum hunting. That's why backpedaling is scummy.
