Pokemon Anime - Game references

Well I was breeding a Togepi when I stopped by at Misty's gym in my SoulSilver. I talked to Togepi and it said... "TOGEPI is crying softly." I assume this is because Misty owned a Togepi in the anime. I've started thinking about this more and more. I have never seen such an Anime reference in the games. What I want to know is if there are more, and how you feel about these references. It really makes me think.

That was just a coincidence.

Actually, PMJ, that's a reference to the anime.
Togepi is the only non-water Pokémon to have a special interaction in the Cerulean Gym. That's doesn't sound coincidental at all.

...Other than that, there have been a couple of other anime references in the 4th Gen. D/P/t had Trainers resembling Butler, Diane and Rebecca, who are all movie characters.

As for my opinion, I don't mind them.

Riley was more than likely inspired by the movie Aaron. Not to mention one of the trainers from GSC looked like that kid in the red jacket from the first movie. That is in no way a coincidence.

There's also Red's team being composed similarly to Ash's from the first few series aside from the Espeon.

Hmm more things to think about! Anyways I thnk it's not a coincidence, as Togepi only has that interaction in Cerulean Gym. It seems there aren't many anime references though. Togepi probably cries because he/she wants to be with Misty. And yeah Red's team is like Ash's. Good discussion guys =P keep it up!

Well, there was that special pikachu edition, if people want that to count.... I know some users in the fanbase are a bit wacky when it comes to that game.

Is this only in HGSS? If not, there are some in DPl. In the route north of the Resort Area, there are two Trainers facing each other. One Trainer has a Salamence and Mightyena, while the other has a Kirlia and Dusclops. The one with the Salamence talks about performances. Doesn't it seem like that these two are referencing the people from Jirachi Wishmaker? Butler in that movie had those four Pokemon, and was a magician.

I doubt the game has related to the anime, the anime have so many mistakes and errors.

Aside from Yellow version (which in my mind was perhaps the single worst game in the entire series...), there really aren't a lot of connections between the games and anime. It's probably easier to say that the anime makes more references to the games and manga than anything else, but this is only because they're what the show's based on. In the case of your Togepi crying when you were at Cerulean Gym, I think it just didn't like being there. I had the same thing happen with my Leafeon in SS, and right afterwards it started "making a face like it's angry" and it hadn't even battled anyone yet or got KO'd or anything.

Also, in D/P/P, to pass to Celestic Town you have to get past some Psyducks, and in the Anime.... Surprise Surprise they encounter some Psyducks that won't budge on their way to..... (cookie for the first person who gets this) Celestic Town (woohoo I get it first I get a cookie :D).

That's anime referencing the games, not the games referencing the anime.

The sprite of the woman standing outside in New Bark Town looks an AWFUL lot like Ash's mother....

@ Apollo:

The show isn't based at all on the comics. In fact, nothing about the franchise is based on the comic.

The references aren't many, but they are there. While it's easy to suggest that togepi probably doesn't like the gym, we'd have to wonder why. What makes that gym so special that it would make togepi cry? So far, it's the only Gym that makes it this way (I took it to Morty's gym which should normally scare the mess out of it, but it was "overjoyed"). Misty's gym is the only one that looks (more or less) normal compared to other gyms in kanto and johto combined. What makes it so special in comparison to Togepi?

And where did your Leafeon get angry at?

This is a definite reference; in the Japanese version they're even given the same names. The games will do things like that sometimes, but the references are often lost in translation.

It was strange, but I entered the Cerulean Gym and went right up to front of its pool with my Leafeon as my party's leader. Before I used Surf, I wanted to check to see what kind of reaction it had to being there. At first, the message said it started crying, then it switched to the creature being angry. I can't figure out why; usually that only seemed to happened when it fainted and I use a Revive on it. But, I couldn't figure out why it was doing it there...

Thanks for all your responses guys! Togepi has this special reaction whether it has full health, half health , or 1 HP. And no status conditions either. http://serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/partner.shtml You can check here. It says Togepi has a special reaction there. And for the Leafeon issue, it's wierd cause, Leafeon or even grass types have no special reaction there. It either died before and has bad friendship, or has low HP and has a special condition.
