Pokemon Catcher Nerf

I want to know what the community thinks about pokemon catcher leaving the format.

Pokemon Catcher isn't actually leaving the format. It just requires a coin flip to work now instead. ~Camoclone

I would prefer they ban it though. Garbodor, Mr.Mime, Sigilyph DRX, Dusknoir etc. are significantly better.

Yeah, it's going to make rogue decks more apparent in the format. Meaning that decks are going to be muchhhh more difficult to build. How am I supposed to test my deck if I don't know what the meta is going to be like at all? The first-turn-no-attack rule is also going to contribute to this... we'll have to wait to see how the format pans out.

Everything they added, has been done to slow down the format, the first turn attack, the catcher nerf. Everything.

This thread is to be solely about the pokemon catcher nerf. Not the first turn rule as well. ~Camoclone

While the nerf on Pokemon Catcher could potentially make Genesect EX for Red Signal with Plasma Energy staples in every deck, the only problem with Genesect EX with Plasma Energy as a replacement for Catcher is that there aren't any cards in the current format that allow you to bounce attached energies back to your hand to abuse it as a board control engine and even then it would take up loads of deck space for better cards that would make your deck run more consistently.

There is 1 card at least scoop up cyclone. Return 1 pokemon and all cards attached to your hand. It could work if you basically removed lasbank and added those 6 cards but granted there are plenty of downsides to this including prizing 1/6 of the cards

In my opinion people just need to accept that catcher is gone. Let's face it there really aren't any replacements. Sure Genesect EX can be used however it takes up so much space and it will just hurt you more than it helps you. Genesect might be used as a 1-of tech in plasma however it just isn't desirable. It takes up much needed bench space as well as takes away some of your energy acceleration. You can run 2 catchers in any Darkrai decks but due to the nerf most other decks will only run 1 or 2 max. Honestly I wouldn't be too surprised if no one ran any catcher now (in anything but Darkrai).

My buddy runs Darkrai / Victini with laser bank, so I could see him throwing in a 1-1 or a 2-2 Ninetales line.

Genesect, Ninetales, or Catcher?

I have been considering my options lately for my darkrai list, thinking whether to drop my catchers for a 2-2 ninetales line or not due to recent rule changes, so I just want your guy's opinion on whether just in general if we should all replace catchers with a ninetales line or genesct and plasma energies? Go for the safe route, yet use up bench space and energy attachments (in genesect's case) or risk it in the form of an item card. Once you put it into context, each are about equal in merit.

So, what's the verdict?

RE: Genesect, Ninetales, or Catcher?

I feel that ninetails is the better way because you can change some of the energy in the deck to Blend and use laser for a backup tech. The only problem is having room for devolution sprays...and now energy switches too. The only solution is to run straight Darkrai, Sableye, Absol and maybe Keldeo EX... but that's it.
How's Regionals going?

You mean E-switch is being reprinted?!?!? :)

Yeah I agree that ninetails is the best option, between being able to junk hunt back lasers and devolution spray (should you use it) plus being able to easily hit 80-150 with a laser and nine tails for 1 energy is pretty good.

With Catcher gone due to it's recent errata, Hypnotoxic Laser fills the void it once left in the format cause think about it with the 180+ HP that Basic EX's have in the current format that paves the way for decks to maximize it's damage output much more consistently despite not being able to control the board state. You could still run Virbank City Gym with it but it can be a toss up If you already run Tropical Beach which most players run only 2 of with 4 Skyla and / or 1 Computer Search to fetch for it early to mid game. Tool Scrapper also isn't a bad replacement for Catcher either with the popularity of Silver Bangle in the current format.

Ninetales is only a good tech If you're running Devolution Spray to reuse Bright Look which combos nicely with Mew EX for Ninetales' Hexed Flame attack and Laserbank otherwise don't bother with it. Right now there are no solid alternatives to Pokemon Catcher and Tropical Beach in the current format although while it's a good thing for Catcher it's not for Beach since it still hurts players who need that access to Beach in order to play Stage 2 Setup Decks consistently especially Blastoise / Keldeo which If you aren't running Tropical Beach in it then you won't do nearly as good with it however it might still be possible to get away with competing well with Blastoise / Keldeo on a budget though.

The Pokémon Catcher errata is good because more games should be solely decided by coin flips. Wait...

I honestly can't tell what this means. It's either going to be everyone will run 4 Catchers, or everyone will run 0. It's the Reversal format all over again...and that was one of the most horrible formats to play in. I know people complain about the format now and recently, but it was nothing compared to the HS-BW metagame. That was awful. Granted, back then there was Junk Arm, so there was some utility to it, but...I can't help but feel this will not bode well for the format. Or maybe it will and I'm paranoid about it. Either way, I'm not playing anymore regardless, so it makes no difference to me.

It's in Legendary Treasures, yes.

At least it's not as bad as forgetting what was in your Prize Cards.

All those times when I needed Catcher to win.... now those moments will feel even more stressful because I'd need a coin-flip of heads too.

Yeesh, I dunno, I still want to run it, but I also have a principal of consistency I'd like to honor as well.

I kinda like the new rule changes because it is going to pave a new way on how to play the pokemon tcg. It will also form new strategies. Bye bye donks :)

I can at least agree that it will be nice to not have Donks anymore. :) Especially since I like stage 1 / 2 decks.
