So I am just coming back and playing pokemon. I think the last card expansion i played was the gym leaders so i was wondering i for example im using sabrina's genger http://940ee6dce6677fa01d25-0f55c91....cf2.rackcdn.com/products/pictures/149414.jpg

says Dark Wave "All pokemon powers stop working until the endo of your opponets next turn" So does that stop the newer pokemon with abilites or are the abilities something that is completely diffrent? thank you.

Moved from the TCG Help & Advice to the Ask a Professor forums, as the OP is asking a question on rulings. ~bbninjas

Pokemon Powers (which also includes "Poke-Powers" and "Poke-Bodies") are functionally similar to Abilities but nominally different mechanics. Abilities were first introduced in the Black and White sets, and have essentially replaced Pokemon Powers. There are no Pokemon with Pokemon Powers currently allowed in the Expanded or Standard formats. You would only see both in Unlimited play at this time. Things that affect Pokemon Powers like Sabrina's Gengar's Dark Wave attack do not affect Abilities because they are considered a seperate mechanic. Likewise, something like Garbodor's Garbotoxin Ability, which shuts off all other Abilities, would not shut off Pokemkn Powers.

Thank you very much for the clarification so much has changed since i last played do you know any offical sites i can go to to catch up on rules its been along time and I am way out of touch

You're very welcome. The game has gone through many changes since the days of Gym Leaders and the other classic sets. The core concept of the game is of course the same, but as you can see, some rules and mechanics have been tweaked and phased in or out over the years. Since I assume you're familair wht the basic rules on some level, you'll be able to integrate into the modern game pretty easily... just like I did.

Here is a link to the most recent version of the rulebook in pdf format, from Pokemon.com. If you decide to buy a preconstructed deck (I strongly suggest picking up the Keldeo vs Rayquaza Battle Arena decks coming out soon, as it includes several staple cards), you'll find this rulebook included in that as well. For more detailed rulings and information on competitive play, check out the Play! Pokemon Rules and Resources page.

I'll probally get some of the starter decks, I been looking for a deck around Typhlosion. It was my favorite pokemon in the Gameboy/3ds games. I found a Massive Eruption Typhlosion deck that looked pretty good I've got all the cards for it but 2. I was mainly asking about the pokemon power because I had a good idea for a psychic deck but doesn't seem I can't mix old and new cards if i want to play at tournaments i could use what i have against friends but since pokemon powers don't work against abilities I may have to change some of the deck around. the ex cards seem a bit unbalanced but it works I guess. :)
