Thought I'd share my plans regarding my current project, a Pokemon x Neon Genesis Evangelion fan game. Don't worry if you're unfamiliar with NGE... being a Pokemon fan is all that'll be required to enjoy my game. Though if you're also an Evangelion fan, you'll definitely get some extra amusement out of it. ;)

Here's some WIP screenshots:

Don't expect it to play exactly like your typical Pokemon game, however... I'm using this project to experiment with stuff, so some things will be new and/or different. But the basics will be the same... catch Pokemon, battle, collect badges, beat the Elite Four and become the champion, etc.

It'll feature the original 151 Pokemon, as well as some pulled from the Evangelion universe.

Anyway, my target is to have this completed sometime in December, but that might be just a little ambitious. If not in December, then definitely sometime in 2013. I'm definitely going to see this thing through to the end, so stay tuned!

Glad you guys are interested. Like I said, I'm aiming for a December release. But that might be a little overly ambitious, so we'll see.

Anyway, here's 3 gym leader sprites:

Pewter City gym leader Ryoji Kaji:

Cerulean City gym leader Asuka Langley Soryu:

This looks really promising. Good job with it. :) I really liked the sprites, especially Asuka's. :p It really looks like as her.

By the way, I hope you will add some classical RPG elements to the game (like dialogues and decisions with it) to make it a bit more different and unique from other Pokémon official/fan games.

It looks good. I would like to see some Pokemon Sprites, too.

Thanks. As far as Pokemon sprites go, I'll mainly just be using the Ruby/Sapphire sprites, with the exception being the new fakemon from the Evangelion universe (which I haven't sprited yet).

Evangelion Unit 01, of course.

Glad you like 'em. I'm not an expert spriter by any means, so I'm pretty glad they turned out alright. I might change up the Kaji sprite a little more to make it look more different from the Brock sprite it's based off of.

As far as classical RPG elements go, there might be a bit of dialogue. I don't think there's going to be any branching decisions though... the game isn't going to have a very serious or in-depth storyline. It's going to be about as sophisticated as the original Red/Blue versions in that regard.

That being said, there will definitely be some interesting features to differentiate it from the typical Pokemon game, fan or official. ;)

Also, here's three more gym leader sprites:

Celadon Gym Leader, Mari Makinami:

Fuchsia Gym Leader, Toji Suzuhara:

Saffron Gym Leader, Rei Ayanami:

Edit: Make that four more. Cinnabar Gym Leader, Gendo Ikari:

Edit #2: Make that five more. Viridian Gym Leader, Kozo Fuyutsuki:

I need to tell you that Gendo and Rei really awesome (especially Gendo, damn, it totally looks like as him). Mari is still a look-alike of Erika (the clothes), Kozo is also good. Toji's face could be a bit younger, or at least different. At the moment, it really looks like as Koga. But the clothes are nice.

Will you re-do Ryoji in the near future? At the moment it really resembles to Brock.

(Also forgot to comment that the Shinji sprite is REALLY AWESOME.)

Yeah, I'm probably gonna tweak a few of those sprites. Ryoji definitely needs a little bit more refining to make it look less Brockish, I think Aoba's hair needs to be a little longer and darker, and Toji's face could use some tweaking like you said.

I'll try to alter Mari's sprite to make the clothes more like Mari's actual clothes, but I can't guarantee that I can pull it off. I'll do my best though.

Thanks for the compliments btw. :)

Also, here's an old build you guys can try out:

It's not much, but it'll soon be much more.

Alright folks, the Elite Four:

#3 - Pen Pen

#4 - Misato Katsuragi

Rival - Kaworu Nagisa

I've tried out that downloadable demo. I see now what did you mean under "some unique twists". That part with the professor was brilliant (I won't spoiler it, so that should be enough, since those who played it will know what I meant).

For the new sprites: PEN PEN IS AWESOME. Also nice job with Misato and even Naoko, even if I think a professor sprite would fit her better (for the coat). Kaworu is okay, even if the hair is still a bit Blueish (Gary-ish), but Keel is nothing like the original character. It's still Bruno. The pose, the cloth, everything. So it totally needs a rework.

Thanks for the compliments and the constructive criticism, I'll see what I can do about that Keel sprite. But maybe underneath his outfit, Keel's a muscular beast? :p

But for the time being, I'm moving my focus from spriting to programming. There's a feature I'm working on in particular that I'm hoping I'll be able to tease sometime today, once I add a few more touches. On second thought, I think I'm going to shelve this feature... it would've been neat, but implementing it would take a lot of forethought and testing to get right, and I don't think I'd be able to release the game even remotely close to on schedule if I spent the time required to properly implement it.

So I guess I'll just spill the beans as to what the feature was going to be: Random world generation, creating an entirely unique region each and every playthrough. I've got it working on a macro scale, but generating the granular details is a whole lot more work. And it'd require several months of testing to make sure that glitches didn't make any games unbeatable or put anything in weird or wrong places.

So I'm putting aside this feature for now, and I'm just going to work on developing the bulk of the game. I'll continue to tinker with the random Pokemon world generator on the side, and if I get it working satisfactorily in time, I might end up implementing it after all. And if I don't get it working before Purple's initial release, I'll still continue working on it and include it in an updated version of Purple.

Anytime. I guess only Bruno's, Brock's and Erika's sprites needs a rework. Maybe for Mari, you could use another sprite.

For the random region idea: do you mean that every time you start a new game, Pokémon would be in a totally different areas, or do you mean that the whole world would be different? I think the next one is just over the top and not really needed, but the changes of the Pokémon's whereabouts is an awesome and refreshing idea.

I meant that the whole world would be different. But even though I'm shelving that idea, I'm definitely still going to implement some randomness into the world, such as what Pokemon you find in different areas.
