So basically consider that I've stepped out of a time machine from 2000. Is there a guide anywhere for the returning player? If not:
  1. What are the dominant Arctypes in tourney play (lists?)
  2. POP - Whats that?

Heh, there isn't exactly a guide. I should make an article about that, should help people like you.

Anyway, POP means Pokemon Organized Play. Basically the new Wizards of the Costs, its under PUI, Pokemon USA Inc.
In Europe and Australia and such, other companies might be involved.

As for archetypes that dominate, there are two. One is based on the Gardevoir and Gallade found in Secret Wonders, and the other is based on the Magmortar in Secret Wonders. You can find their scans on the main page, under the Diamond and Pearl set.

If you're returning; you're best of buying sets that fall under the Diamond and Pearl sets. These sets contain the best cards for current competive play.

Hope I helped.

I just did the same thing, the last set I played was Gym Heroes. I just came back about a month ago when my 8 year old daughter discovered my old binders in the closet and wanted to learn the game.

I can save you some time. Out of your old cards pull all of your Energy and then Pokeball, Plus power, Potion, Energy Search, Switch, Mysterious Fossil, Warp point, and Master Ball. Everything thing else goes back into the binder or box. Now forget about the other cards and sets between the last set you bought and the Diamond and Pearl set, they don't really matter much to a returning player. Everything you will need is in Diamond and Pearl.

Start buying the Diamond and Pearl Preconstructed decks like the Magmorter deck, and you will soon have a solid base of the new trainers and some decent cards to start building new decks.
