Ruling porygon2 and steven's advice

steven's advice: draw a number of cards up to the number of your opponent's Pokemon in play. if you have 7 or more cards (including this card) in your hand, you can't play this card.

porygon2's poke-power download: once during your turn (before your attack) you may discard a supporter card from your hand and use the effect of that card as the effect of this power. this power can't be used if porygon2 is affected by a special condition.


so my question is this: could i still discard steven's advice with download to draw cards even if i had 7+ cards in my hand since i am not putting the card in play?

No, Porygon2 says "use the effect of that card." The 7 card cutoff is part of the effect.

When copying Steven's Advice or any kind of Supporter with a restriction or requirement, you are always subject to those restrictions, so you must have <6 cards in your hand when using Steven's, you must discard a card to copy Holon Mentor/TV Reporter, etc.

no, the card says that i cannot put steven's in play if i have 7+ cards. with porygon2 i am discarding it. if what you say was true then one couldn't discard steven's as part of tv reporter or anything else.

That's not right. You must always pay costs of supporters when using them, regardless of how they're being used. Telepass and Psychic Research are used in the same exact way.

It's like copying an attack. You still have to meet all the requirements of playing it normally.

With Steven's, you must have 6 cards or less in your hand. End of story.

you have to meet the requirements. when you use stevens advice, you put it into play, and that means its no longer part of your hand. but, the card specifies "including this card" so you need to have 6 cards or less in your hand(plus the stevens used=7).
The same hapens to the effect, so everybody is right, drop the stevens only if you have 6 cards plus the stevens, another card in your hand and you cant use it, even if you use it like a poke power.

I see it as the Power has been erased and replcaed with the whole text of the Supporter for the turn. You don't just drop random bits.

You can use download and discard the steven's and use its effect if you have 7 cards in your hand though. Since you discard the card and then use the effect, you have 6 cards in your hand at the time of the cards activation so you bypass the hand requirements.
