Discussion Post Rotation Staples

You can't always follow trends. BW/XY was essentially the same game from what SM is trying to do. We have nerfed versions of the cards like Lysandre, N and Professor Juniper/Sycamore. No one really knows what the actual rotation will be but with a harsh change of game design from one set (two if you count Evolutions) to Sun and Moon is quite telling.

They could rotate up to Break and it will most likely happen but nothing much about the game changes. We still have N and Professor Sycamore in the format, which were printed in Fates and Steam, which is why I like the idea of Evolutions-On because it remove N and Professor Sycamore from the game, as well as overpowered decks like Greninja BREAK (Greninja is broken).

The could tell us one of many things and they are;

- No Rotation (Standard)
- Break-On
- Generations/Fates-On
- Evolutions-On (which offers the most balance)
- Sun and Moon-On

Less likely to happen

- BW-On (Japans format)
- Discontinue the Expanded format
- No Rotation (Expanded)

This is a lot of things, though less likely that could happen. We know one thing for sure though. The game is embracing a ban list now and S/M changed the game.
Except that we already have a vast differnce in meta game diversity so rotating a ton of sets is not needed at all. Gx's have pretty much taken the format by storm with the only hold outs being gardevoir, volcanion, and darkrai and they have lost ground considerably. Allot of gx's are evolutions and breakthrough started the trend of having powerfull evolution Pokemon so it makes sense to keep the set as that's the direction the tcg is and should be going in. 2 side notes greninja is in no way broken and hasn't showed any signs of being a top tier threat and secondly Not a single card has been banned so not I'm not so sure about the whole embracing a banlist thing

They have already said that they were monitoring cards in expanded for potential additions to the current ban list.

Garbodor was made because of the BW/XY cards. If that block remains legal for another two or three years, then we will be seeing more cards like it. GX Pokemon are decent but not balanced for BW/XY and only work well because of the Trainer set. Also, as was said, they are keeping eyes on the cards for their ban list.

On another note, have fun playing those 60HP Basic Pokemon with Greninja BREAK around.

Yes in expanded not so much in standard the reason for maintaining a banlist in expanded is so they can can expanded cards that are broken with new cards

How long have you been around in the game? It looks like they might be trying to set up a similar format to either hgss or the lux chomp format.

I'm definitely hoping Expanded does not rotate so it would mirror the Modern MTG format which is huge and baffling and very diverse (well, most of the time it's diverse). Seeing other formats thrive like Sealed or Unlimited or some version of Pauper would be neat as well - anything that restructures the power density of cards and makes ppl think about different card pools in creative ways. Having only 2 formats can make new set releases pretty underwhelming when you get 360 cards in a box and 12-15 of them are remotely playable, including Trainers.

I only mention all this because I think it relates to set rotations and how to prep for them. Is it futile to try and predict what will rotate? Of course! Is it beneficial to consider what the meta game will look like if they decide to make rotation fall before or after a certain set? Absolutely! It sharpens your mind as a player and deck builder, and it's also fun to "play the market" and speculate about card prices. I always find I'm playing my best when a new set releases and everything is unsettled. Some people don't like it at all because it can be overwhelming and scary wading into unclear waters. That's when it's the most fun for me tho.

Im kind of curious to see how rotation works this year, we haven't received a replacement for Sycamore yet in Sun and Moon.

I honestly think that if they were to just say screw it and go Sun Moon on- it'd be extremely fun. Odds are this won't happen but just to see every single remotely relevant supporter just axed would create a much slower and way more fun format. At least in my eyes

No I understand that it would based on how rotation has worked the last 2 years. (4 sets get rotated out, the last 4 released) Just there was a post above suggesting that they could rotate all of XY and Y if they wanted to. Although I find that unlikely. My guess, we get Samuel oak to replace Sycamore next year when STS rotates. :)

I've been around for a long time. I've been playing competitively since the first ex format.

I think that they are trying to make a balance of strong basics and strong evolutions, which we have never seen (to my knowledge).

Good Afternoon

We all know that the rotation is coming. With that said what are your ideas for a new deck engine trainers that can possibly be a staple next rotation in standard? I myself am a competitive player and would want to hear your thoughts and ideas about this.

Rotating Staple Cards

Trainers mail
Vs seeker
Lysandre
Shaymin EX

These are some examples that would be rotated and is a staple in every deck.
I'm going to be sad when VS Seeker goes out. I just bought a playset of SR ones for 100 and some adds for my Drampa deck but I really don't care at this point.
