Prereleases? Some pwn, but others fail?

I understand that prereleases are extremely fun to go to and all, but are some sets REALLY worth going to?I mean, look at it this way:

Diamond & Pearl: Starting a whole new series, probably should go to this
Mysterious Treasures: Did anything good aside from Magmortar/Lv. X come out in this set?
Secret Wonders: Plenty of Rares, and Supporters/Trainers.
Great Encounters: Rare Candyl, Claydol, 4 Lv. X's, yeah.
Majestic Dawn: Nothing much... Lefeon was good last year, but aside from in Eeveelutions, not so much.
Legends Awakened: AMU Lv. X's, AMU Pixies themselves, Mewtwo Lv. X, Ditto just to list a few
Stormfront: Good Lv. X's, good Rares, etc.
Platinum: Begins SP's
Platinum RR: Only the LV. X's are the good cards in this set. That's pretty much it.
Platnum SV: Not much good in this set at all. Meh, there's Garchomp C and Blaziken FB... but is there anything pwn in here?
Platinum Arceus: OK, The Arceus fail. Face it. There's only a few good rares in this set.

Are all prereleases really worth the 25 bucks to go to? Look at it this way: Diamond and Pearl, Great Encounters, Legends Awakened, Stormfront, and Platinum were the only REAL good PR sets. Lots to pull and such. But look at this:

RR, only the Lv. X's really are good. There's not much else. Was it worth 25 bucks to pull maybe 1 good rare, and have the rest useless? Victors: Relicanth... Garchomp C/Blaziken FB... what else? Not much. Again, really worth 25 dollars?

So really, are all prereleases worth going to? What I'm suggesting is, why not just save the 25 dollars, wait 'till the set comes out, and get Singles from Ebay or your local game store instead. The 25 dollars goes far towards new Trainers/Energies, and can get a nice few rares [seriously, whole Stormfront Prerelease, or guranteed Gengars/Machamps?] I think it's a better idea sometimes to just save the money and get the EXACT cards that you need, yet everybody hypes the prereleases no matter if the set is good or not. What do you think? Post your opinions here.

This seems to be more of a case of "is it worth buying booster packs". Going to a prerelease gives you 6 packs plus sleeves for $25, and many give out gratuity packs if you finish the event. So, if you disregard the sleeves, you're getting each pack for about $3.50-$4.00, lower than or about the standard price. So, when compared to buying booster packs, cost is a non-issue.

Also, pre-releases are often more about the fun along with getting the new cards. You don't have to worry about losing because it won't affect your ranking, so you can afford to be a lot more casual. For newcomers the atmosphere is just in general more inviting and relaxing, and for serious players it can just be nice to participate in a tournament with no real obligations for once.

Haha RR was only good for the X's? Are you forgetting Flygon/RR Beedrill/Infernape/Gallade/Luxray as good pokemon, BESIDES their respective X's? And Flints/Lucians/Upper/Sunnyshore/SP Radar? I am pretty sure those were not bad. The set wasn't the best, but I mean its a great starter set to get into the game. Because on the cover, it looks fun with easy cards to play with, but you dive in and find yourself with incredibly new strategies. Heck, without RR, a good few of the decks would not have won worlds. O. And Nidoqueen also. So put RR as a prerelease to go to. NOW.

Some sets are bad. Arceus-despite contrary belief, is a good set to go to. Why? The Arceus cards. Who battles with them? No one. But they will be secret rares, which means a lot of them. And who COLLECTS secret rares? COLLECTORS. Who have lots of cards. Or SELLERS. Who SELL and BUY. And then there is Salamanace X, which is beast. Gengar X is pretty solid, and Tangrowth is monstastic. So Arceus is like 7.5/10. It would be good to go to, maybe not spend 50, but hey, 25 for a booster draft is fine by me. And my wallet.

Honestly, i think that it is worth going to. Every new set has something to look foward too, and having new cards REALLY appeals in trades, so i think it IS worth that 25 Bucks.

I think people just go to be with friends and for the sleeves. Plus, if they pull something good, just for bragging rights.

EDIT: The prices is actually pretty good. For the ones that give you two extra packs after the tourney, that's a total of 8 packs (6 packs before, 2 packs after.) Eight times three is 24, so you are only one dollar below the total price. Add the sleeves (which usually cost around 5 dollars) then that's 29 dollars.

Don't forget the Promo Card, which can go high for collectors.

Yeah, these are a great deal for what you get. Almost guaranteed a couple holos and you get to play with them and trade for what you need for your decks possible weeks before the official release. There's really no harm in going at all if you need anything from the set.

dmaster out.

I agree with The Power of Three, I ain't even going to go to AoA, I do not think it is even a good set at all. I will trade for the cards I am looking for, because I have plenty of trade bait.

I think it is an obvious choice to go to them as long as the set isn't horrible. 25 $ would get you 6 packs anyways, plus you get:

FUn
Sleeves
Free bonus packs

It's just getting your moneys worth of stuff.

I can have fun at my house.
Belive I will never need new sleeves.
I really do not care about extra packs.

So overall it does not sound good for me.

@ The mention of MT:

At that time, Blissey was really good. Plus the Lucario Lv.X added to any mario decks left. Don't forget Bebe and Wager.

So it looks like trash now, but back then it was decent.

Going to any prerelease is pretty fun, regardless of the set. Even the SV prerelease was loads of fun (even though I had made a pretty lame deck out of it lol). It's less about the cards imo and more about the experience. It's a great atmosphere.

With that said, the set doesn't even look THAT bad so far. Yeah probably nothing really game changing aside from a few, but overall it's a solid set with some potential collectible cards. You definitely get your money's worth imo.

I still say nah, $25.00 is still $25.00. You can have fun in many other ways it does not have to involve money in any way then. Even still, now as I see when I missed two prereleases, it was worth missing Secret Wounders and Great Encounters, because I saved $50.00, I traded for the things I needed from the set (Claydol, and Gallade Gardevoir), but that is because I own a lot of cards to do so. I instead of going to those prereleases I hung out with some friends ( I believe TL32, and mr.619 at that time with naruto cards). If you really think about it, why go to the prerelease if there is nothing you need except a few cards you can ethier trade or just buy? You got two and a half months until the next set comes out, by then I have 4 of every lv. X, and I kinda wish I really did not go to the prerelease. There are some prerelease I'd say that are worth it, and some I'd pass.

Then why are you playing this game? Last time I checked, buying cards involved using money. If you're using this logic, why not do something less money-intensive in general like commit to a sport, which probably has a larger marginal utility in the long run?

*thumbs up* So what about the people who don't have cards out the wazoo?

I instead of going to those prereleases I hung out with some friends ( I believe TL32, and mr.619 at that time with naruto cards).
So are you insinuating that no one who goes to the PR's is worth being around, even if you don't know them? To be quite fair, you can hang out with your friends a lot more often than you can hang out with people at a PR, especially if the PR isn't at your local league.

If you really think about it, why go to the prerelease if there is nothing you need except a few cards you can ethier trade or just buy?
Because Pokemon has a social aspect.

Comments in Italics. Not trying to sound overly harsh or flamey or anything, but I'm not sure where you're going with this.

So again, this seems to be more of a rant against buying booster packs than actually attending PR's. As for going to PR's, if you only go for the cards, and not to have casual fun and to meet new people, well, you probably shouldn't go to them in the first place. If you're really only focused on getting the good stuff, then by all means just buy them online, but don't force your attitude on people who don't have the disposable income and cards to do so.

IMO, PR are fun to attend regardless of which set it is because:

1. Get to hang out with friends and other people.
2. Get some of the new cards. If lucky, you might even get a LV X and/or highly wanted cards. Then you can probably sell it and get back your money or perhaps even more. XD
3. Get to trade cards or find the cards that you want.
4. Get the sleeves. Some of them are quite nice.

Yes, it might cost a little but it is worth attending... :)

I'm not going to any because Prereleases in Canada are usually $35. I'd rather get a box of the set than getting the cards early.

A guy told me he goes to prerelese because it's the only time he might to use some of the cards.I kinda agree with that,at the last prerelese i pulled 2 seakings and used them in my prerelese deck, not after that day though. And it gets all my friends together for aleast on good day of fun, getting harder the older we get

It`s really not about the deal or not deal imo, it`s all about fun... When you have the posibility to go to 2-3 PR a year, then sure it is great day for you ...(not money situation in my family, first PR is 150 km away from me, 2 hours of driving)
