P!P/Rules Primal Clash-on Confirmed for 2017 Season

I'm excited for all the decks I can now play without getting destroyed first turn, stage 2s return? Atleast for the first half of the season I hope.

...

You realize Stage 2 decks are still being played, right? Probably not the ones you want and I think all with Evolution acceleration, but they are used. ;)

What I would like is for the many solid cards that aren't worth using competitively right now to have a chance because of the fresh format, but I doubt it as most cards still aren't going to be as good as the top cards that are left.

Aside from Greninja what is actually prominent? We have Vileplume for lock but it in itself is not a deck.

Garchomp isn't prominent but now as more potential.

Gengar isn't prominent but now has more potential.

Thats what I was trying to say.

We have "Stage 2 breaks" which break onto stage 1, apart from again Greninja.

NightMarch and Battle Compressor being gone will slow the format enough I believe.

@Shining Goodra

Thank you for explaining.

If a card is designed to be a Being a Bench-sitter I still think that counts, so Vileplume and Crobat work for me. Even if Greninja (via Greninja BREAK) is alone, it still exists. BREAK Evolutions of Stage 1 cards are very similar to Stage 2 Pokémon in terms of difficulty running them. That is before we get into the Evolutions that see play but not through Evolving from Basic to Stage 1 to Stage 2 or even Basic to Stage 2 via Rare Candy. I doubted you were being literal, but in a crowded, competitive format that actually seems reasonably good to me... especially since I still count alternate methods of playing a Stage 2 (even though I would prefer they not exist but that's a whole separate discussion).

Perhaps more relevant is asking how many Stage 2 Pokémon were seeing competitive play prior to XY: Phantom Forces? The answer is "not many". Several specific deck foci or pieces of support and sometimes even both for the former competitive metagame are gone, but those also kept some of the "next strongest" cards from seeing play. So I do not expect a radical shift such as Stage 2 Pokémon suddenly becoming equal to or surpassing the other Types in usage. In fact I expect it to become a bit less, at least if like me one counts stuff played via Archie's Ace in the Hole or Maxie's Hidden Ball Trick.

I may not have the experience to weigh in on the conversation here, but if what is on page 1 is true it looks like a good time to experiment with new cards and new strategies.

If the top decks are being shaken up it seems like a good time to start crafting decks that can take their place.

I'd be interested to know which Trainer cards people think will be reprinted?

Personally, I'd be surprised if we don't get a reprint of:
  • AZ
  • Blacksmith
  • Korrina
  • Xerosic
  • Super Scoop Up

In my opinion, the funniest time to play pokemon is at the start of the seasoning. With 2017 rotation shaking it up in a big way, trainers can gauge what might be good, but nobody really knows. What tactics competitive trainers generally tend to lean for is item, ability lock, or over power on T1. There will be a lot of experimenting to achieve these tactics as they have been proven to work consistently in the historical game. However, based on the cards, these strategies will need some testing to achieve. At start of season, generally, these tactics are clunky, by mid season a mature deck list will have been developed, by end of season people will understand how to play the deck lists very well.

I get why they release deck lists. But sometimes, I wish Pokemon would not release the Top 8 deck lists for every major in every division as it causes the game to go stale.
