Problem with the avatar uploader

I've tried uploading about a dozen or so different avatars, and every time, instead of displaying the them as avatars,I get the following message

The file upload failed. Please choose a valid file and try again.

I tried different kinds of pictures (such as png, jpg, etc.), and different sizes as well, yet I keep getting the same message. Is anyone else having this problem?
