This thread is used for all competitive discussion on Pyroar variants. This includes strategies, playstyles, and techs.

You may post decklists here, but only as a means to add to the discussion. If you're looking for advice on your list, post in the Deck Garage.

Pyroar Skeleton List:

Pokémon: 8
  • 4 Pyroar FLF
  • 4 Litleo FLF 18
Trainers: 35
  • 4 Professor Juniper
  • 3 N
  • 2 Lysandre
  • 2 Blacksmith
  • 4 Roller Skates
  • 3 VS Seeker
  • 4 Ultra Ball
  • 3 Switch
  • 3 Pokémon Catcher
  • 3 Muscle Band
  • 1 Computer Search
  • 3 Scorched Earth
Energy: 12
  • 8 Fire
  • 4 Double Colorless
Open Spots: 5

Strategy:
The strategy behind a Pyroar deck is to take advantage of Pyroar's Intimidating Mane Ability to prevent your opponent from hurting Pyroar. These things include attacking Evolutions, Hypnotoxic Laser, and Garbodor (shuts off Intimidating Mane). The heavy Pokémon Catcher and Lysandre count is to bring out evolving Basic Pokemon before they can evolve and attack your Pyroar. The heavy Item draw allows you to draw into your Lysandres and Catcher much more easily. The problem with this deck is obviously decks that run lots of Evolutions, and that includes Mega Pokemon. Mega Pokemon especially have far too much HP for Pyroar to handle. But decks that don't run many Evolutions can be crushed by an unsuspecting Pyroar deck.

Good Additions:
  • Mewtwo EX
  • Seismitoad EX
  • Charizard EX FLF 12
  • Electrode PLF
  • Pyroar PHF
  • Bicycle

I disagree with this deck being Tier 1. I don't expect it to see much play at all and it is really not a good deck at all in this format. While I expect Virizion decks to be popular, and this deck beats it, that's just one good matchup. Seismitoad and Fighting are going to be very popular and they are bad matchups for Pyroar. First, they usually play Garbodor, which isn't good for Pyroar, especially with Seismitoad's Item lock and both decks' early aggression. Additionally, Fighting might play 1-2 M Lucario to beat Pyroar even more, and Seismitoad hits for weakness. Most other decks can get around Pyroar as well. It was good last format because of its array of good matchups, but its matchups aren't nearly as good now.

This post was meant to add my thoughts on the deck not just to attack your judgement MtC. :p

This deck is good but not tier 1. It is useless if you are playing against any deck with stage 1 or 2s as a base, or any Garbodor Deck. I think this deck will always stand at Tier 2 as decks that are good and will win tournaments, but have a lot of ways to counter against.

Electrode PLS has its down sides to playing. Even though you are getting a free Bicycle every turn you can Lysandre and Catcher it up and get the easy prize. Also 1-1 Electrode is way better than 2 Bicycle any day.

I wonder if Jirachi is good in Pyroar decks. On one hand, it can fetch you the Lysandre/Blacksmith/Draw Supporter you need to win the game, but on the other hand, it's an easy 2 prizes.

It's changed to Tier 2 now.

I feel like especially in Pyroar, giving up 2 free prizes with Jirachi is too painful. I do get in a lot of situations where I would want to search for Jirachi to get me the win, but I really don't think it'll be worth it for how many games you'll lose because it gets Lysandred out.

Has anyone tried Seismitoad EX out in this deck? I think it's incredible. It slows your opponent down severely, allowing you to set up Pyroars with ease. It's also great against Garbodor, since if they don't attach a Float Stone to their Trubbish ASAP (which they have to do turn 1 because you'll be using Quaking Punch after that), you can just Lysandre it out and Quaking Punch it until it dies. This can work against a lot of similar Pyroar techs, like Beartic and Machamp. I play 2 in my Pyroar and I'm definitely not taking it out anytime soon.

I was thinking more like Pyroar in Seismitoad/Garbodor, but I suppose that works too. I'll have to make a list for it and try it out.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Pyroar is autowin against big basics while Seismatoad/Garbodor can shut off a lot of other things. Theoretically, it should have no bad matchups, making it BDIF.

I've tried Pyroar in Seismitoad/Garbodor and it's pretty good. I could only really find room for a 2-2 Pyroar, so you can't always get it set up, and it sometimes gets Lysandred out before it evolves. It's also not much help if your opponent plays a 2-2 Beartic or Garbodor. Another thing I don't like about it is you can't play Water Energy along with it, so the deck doesn't have a heavy hitter.

Personally, I still like my Pyroar-Charizard (Wing Attack) deck. As another player mentioned above, there's ample room in the deck for different techs (e.g., Mewtwo EX, Ht Lasers, etc.). And if an opponent is not prepared to deal with the 4 Lions, then I feel I have a good chance of winning the match. (I do have to admit though, it just not as much "fun" to play this deck vs. some other decks originating from the FuF set.)

I have been testing a deck with 3 Seismitoad EX and a 4-4 Pyroar line. It's been working quite well so far, but I need to figure out the right supporter draw for it.

I have also tested Seismitoad EX/garbodor/pyroar. While playing it, I have been discarding garbodor more times than not. I personally find pyroar more useful and shifted the focus of my deck towards it with Seismitoad

I saw that, but that was for expanded on day 2. It seems as thought not many people played Pyroar in day 1 at both Philly and AZ. Looking at a post on the Virbank Facebook Group, 2 people in AZ got in the top 32 with a Pyroar and Pyroar/Seismitoad, while no one in Philly played it day 1. (Not all the decks have been posted yet though).

I know if I was there I would definitely play Pyroar/Seismitoad, but I have to wait until Fort Wayne.

In Arena Cup Berlin Seismitoad/Pyroar won.

What would be a decent replacement for skates? I just find them redundant and too luck-based, one of the reasons I really don't play Pyroar decks.

I actually think that Forretress isn't that bad in this deck. It can counter things like Beartic which would OHKO Pyroar. Haven't tested this, but it's just a thought.

Fiery Torch. You could also add VS Seeker.

I'm thinking a Delphox/Pyroar deck with a few other attackers. Built in draw from Delphox and a catcher effect from Pyroar PF.

In decks where I have a different Supporter to support the main attackers, I use Bicycles to supplement my card draw. Decks like Big Fighting and Pyroar need to run extra Supporters like Korrina and Blacksmith, respectively, to be most effective. So, these extra Supporters will tend to "get in the way" of my playing Colress, N, and Professor Juniper; so, Bicycles can be used to help with needed card drawing..
