Qualifying for nationals and other top tournaments

Hey guys, I'm been searching the site and haven't found anything as far as how this works. I also couldn't find an appropriate forum to post this in, so general it is.

My friend and I are new to the game (about a month). We each have HGSS-on decks. My question is,

How do we qualify for nationals, states, battle roads, etc?

Is it points based like magic can be?
I live in springfield, mo so we have a great hobby shop I've been going too for over 10 years. www.mguinc.com. So I believe they would some type of qualifier but they're not very into the whole pokemon scene so much so that's why I'm asking here.

Also, Is Black and White in the current legal rotation illegal until HGSS-on is announced? My friend and I worry with our HGSS-on decks we'd either A: Not be able to play, or B: just get creamed by overpowered metagames of Diamond and Pearl decks.

Finally, if black and white is banned until the rotation, or not, should we wait until the HGSS-on rotation before going to "league" to get "points" if that's the way to qualify?

Much appreciation in advance!

Thank you!

I believe the only event you qualify for is Worlds. The others, you just grab your ID (or get a new one at the event) and play.

You're rating needs to be high to get into Worlds. You enter the other tournaments to increase your rating, or decrease it.

BW is legal in HGSS on and Magestic Dawn and up...after all, it was officially released.

yeah dude, that's one of the things I like most about pokemon. other than worlds, all you need to get into a tournament is your pokemon organized play ID. and if you don't have one, then you can just get one at the tournament you go to.

also, the pokemon website has a great source for telling you when and where the tournaments and leagues are in your area.

many people say that there's a pretty good chance HGSS-on decks won't do as well as the MD-on decks in the next few tournaments (battle roads for instance, and whatever else happens until rotation) but if you put it together right, I think you should be able to do fairly well with a HGSS-on deck.

Usually everyone gets creamed (including me) during their first tournament(s) especially if you just recently started playing, but don't worry about it. Everyone starts somewhere and it's just a learning experience. what helped me a lot was going through the "deck garage" section of these forums, because exploring different deck ideas/strategies gave me a lot better insight of the game's mechanics and ways to play it. and of course practice makes perfect. keep playing with your friend and try to find other people to play because playing against the same deck (or even player [your friend]) will only get you so far. you gotta learn how to adapt to a deck you're not familiar against, because that's probably what will happen when you go to tournaments.

Thanks guys, I'm going to battle roads and will probably just go for my new zek/amph deck. I figure there's no reason for me to go for MD-on at this point given they'll be rotated and I'd rather "perfect" this deck which is doing quite well than just try and win my first tournament. I'm saying that with total confidence too, not in a "giving up" sort of way.

Thanks.

^Absolutely, that's the right mindset. Don't bother going all-out your first tournament. Now's a good time to start playing since it's just before rotation, you can get into the format and when it does change, you'll be on almost the same level as lots of current players. Work on that HGSS-on deck and you'll be fine come rotation. Preparation is the best idea; most people don't win their first tournaments anyways, just due to lack of experience and cards. Good luck working with that deck, and perfect it as best you can! Make sure you take note of what needs to be improved so you can work on that later.

Does rating reset at the beggining of each season? Does ANY statistic carry over from season to season?

The only National you have to qualify for is the Video Game Nationals I wish it was like the TCG but this year the video game nationals is invite only. Worlds is the only TCG tournament you have to get an invite to is worlds.

I remember my first tournament. I was doing very badly but i keep going at it now I am one of the top 10 in our local area
