It's basically the most prized Pokemon card in existence. Six copies exist and only five are in circulation because they were given to the winners of a Japanese art contest to make illustrations for the Vending series set back in 1997-1998. It's in the news recently because Scott Pratte has listed his PSA graded copy on his eBay page.

Its good in the sense that its adding value to the cards, its bad that he's rejecting $50,000 as it means by the time I could actually afford one, the price will have risen even more so!

They're absolutely a waste of money if you're hoping for them to be worth more in the future than you're paying for them now (other than a few exceptions like sealed Wizards of the Coast products).

I agree and disagree with this. There are a lot of cards that are bad investments, but at the same time, there are a ton of good cards that are good, and even great, investments. You just have to be smart about things.
And not all WoTC sealed products are good investments

I really would love to have this card. 100K is an immense price, but I might buy it. Something i've been wondering about: what if the package with this card gets lost on its journey to the new owner? Does UPS have to hand over 100K to the customer?

If you buy it for 100k then I will officially dub it "Most uninformed purchase ever" - Currently someone else holds that title so please don't try to top them.
It is not worth 100k no matter which way you look at it. I think the 50k price range is just about right since it is the only PSA 9 out there and its rarity.
People need to stop, think, research, and then do more research about card pricing. Just because something is listed for 1 million dollars doesn't mean it is worth even near that amount.

There is a reason that we have a "What is it worth" thread on this forum.
That being said the Illustrator is a very unique card and a PSA 9 is great!

It is very important that you do some basic research on everything you buy before you buy it. Buying items for more than they are worth not only causes you to lose money, but screws up the market because people start to believe that that is what the item is worth, when in actuality it isn't worth that amount - you just overpaid.
