Rayquaza EX/Emboar Deck Help

Hey All,

I'm just returning back to playing Pokemon. The last time I played, Neo had just came out, so I am a bit behind and have been researching a lot to catch up. I found a deck combination that interested me which is Raquaza EX / Emboar. After making my deck I have been having problems beating people mainly because I have no pokemon that are good starters and the deck completely relies on getting Emboar out to build up Raquaza EX with no middle strategy. I guess im looking for some help on maybe finding some pokemon to fill in the gaps of this deck. (Not going the eels route because my friends is playing that.) I really want to use Emboar and I think it could work, Im just a bit lost right now.

Here is my deck:

Pokemon:
Rayquaza EX x 2
Mewtwo EX x 1
Emolga x 1
Emboar x 2
Pignite x 1
Tepig x 2

Trainers:
Professor Juniper x 4
N x 4
Ultra Ball x 2
Heavy Ball x 2
Super Rod x 2
Switch x 3
Cheren x 3
Energy Retrieval x 4
Rare Candy x 2
Pokemon Catcher x 3

Energy:
12 Fire
4 Lightning

As you can see its only 54 cards because I removed:
- 1 Emboar
- 2 Tepig
- 1 Rare Candy
- 2 Emolga

I removed these because I felt like they were weighing me down and not really helping if I got them late game.

Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Raquaza EX/Emboar Deck Help

I'm just gonna dive straight in. I used to use this deck myself but found that I didn't particularly like it and for that reason I'm going to do that thing you're not supposed to do and advise a completely different deck here. The strategy remains mostly the same but the reason I don't like RayBoar is that I feel like it runs into too many problems when it faces Pokemon that AREN'T just EXes. What I found a lot of times would happen is that I'd get RayEX pumped up and one shot kill things, but then I wouldn't have reliable ways to do it again because I'd always have to rely on Energy Retrieval. Sure super rod does get energies back, but it gets them into your DECK which makes the odds of getting them better, sure but you're going to need them back again in some way and having to use Items to cycle the strategy instead of Dynamotor if you were doing RayEels is a big, big difference. That being said....

-1 Emolga
-2 RayEX
-2 Energy Retrieval
-3 Fire Energy
-4 Lightning Energy
+2 MewtwoEX
+2 Reshiram
+2 RegisteelEX
+2 Tepig
+2 Emboar
+1 Heavy Ball
+1 Switch
+1 Catcher
+1 Rare Candy
+4 DCE(Double Colorless Energy)

Why I advise this build: The beauty of this deck is that getting Fire energies onto the Pokemon you'll have in here will prove to be just as useful. Reshiram can use them to use Blue Flare to do lots of damage, you can choose to dump a lot on Mewtwo for quick kills or you can stack them on Registeel so you can start Triple Lasering their bench.

+4 DCE- DCE's are great for any member of the deck as they all use them very well. Mewtwo uses them very well obviously and Reshiram likes them after a Blue Flare because he can still Outrage and it helps Registeel a lot because you can insta Triple Laser from having Registeel in your hand(if you have Emboar out that is)

+1 Switch- I advise to have 4 switch because your opponents strategy is going to be to Catcher out Emboar and leave him out there while they setup, his attack sucks, he has a big retreat cost, etc. It is absolutely essential to have 4 Switch to always be prepared for when this happens.

+1 Catcher- 4 Catcher is pretty staple, if you can't get a 4th one for the time being then sub another card or proxy GoW if need be and such. Don't really think this needs an explanation.

+1 Rare Candy- You want to up your chances of getting Rare Candy to up your overall chances of getting Emboar out as quick as possible. The more Rare Candies and Emboars/Tepigs, the higher your chances are. I didn't want to up it to 4 because I feel like it would take away other resources that are slightly more important for this deck.

+2 Tepig/Emboar- It sucks that he doesn't have a good attack or that putting energies onto himself isn't useful at all but that's just the downside of playing Emboar is all. However, 3 of each at LEAST is necessary but having 4 of each will greatly help your consistency with this deck.

+1 Heavy Ball- Because you need more Emboar's and will be having Registeel EX, heavy ball will be of pretty good use. You also have 2 Ultra Balls so 5 overall search options and 2 of them being for anything is pretty good overall.

-1 Emolga- I understand that Emolga would still work and greatly adds consistency to many evolution decks, however I think this deck can also be good if you get other basics out in your starting hand. You still have Heavy and Ultra Ball to be able to fish things out if you need them and you don't have any Pokemon that are useless after T1(where Emolga sort of is, unless hes restarting your win condition).

-2 Energy Retrieval- Because you'll have MewtwoEX and RegisteelEX as two of your main attackers, you won't need to get energy back as much. I left two in because there are obviously still times when you'll want to attack with Reshiram and therefore need to get them back so two is still a good number to have. There is also Super Rod still too which can help with getting Pokemon back in the late game.

-3 Fire Energy- Usually you don't need more than 13-14 energies total. I know you had more so that Rayquaza had more fuel to work with when he needed it but now that a lot of your attackers can be best off with 1-2 fire to work with because of DCE being so useful, having Super Rods, and having Energy Retrieval, you don't need as much Fire.

Hope this helped.

RE: Raquaza EX/Emboar Deck Help

@irondragon12

I think you gave a pretty interesting suggestions there BUT, if you remove Rayquaza EX from the list, you might as well ask him to make another deck. This post was created in order to get suggestions on HOW to make his deck work not to ask for a new deck list.

on topic:

Pokemon: (12)
Rayquaza EX x 2
Mewtwo EX x 1
Emboar x 3
Pignite x 2
Tepig x 4

Trainers: (30)
Super Rod x 1
Professor Juniper x 4
N x 4
Pokemon Communication x 2
Heavy Ball x 2
Switch x 4
Cheren x 3
Energy Retrieval x 3
Rare Candy x 3
Pokemon Catcher x 4

Energy: (16)
10 {R}
4 {L}
2 {C}{C}

I changed your list a bit. I think this is more balanced. I left you 2 open slots, you can put in anything you want there. A RayBoar deck can still duke it out in this format, just don't expect too much of it. It can still beat tier 1 decks but with a bit of difficulty. You just need to experiment a bit and if you do perfect your list, I promise you that it would be a strong and fun deck to play.

Hope this helps.

RE: Raquaza EX/Emboar Deck Help

r0nald: Yeah I know haha. I even said I was doing the thing you're not supposed to do =P. I think the list you gave him is good for RayBoar for sure though and that maybe he can check my suggestion after if he doesn't like your changes or whatever haha.

RE: Raquaza EX/Emboar Deck Help

^ no harm done man. you did give a pretty interesting deck list, but we should always try to help on what he wants first rather than what would be a better deck.

RE: Raquaza EX/Emboar Deck Help

@irondragon12

Thanks for the deck suggestion. I'm curious about this. I might try it at some point.

@ r0naLd222

Looks pretty good. I also might add:
2 Entei

since there is room for two more and can be a decent middle hitter.

I feel like this deck needs 4 retrieval though, especially now since it has a bit less fire energy, not sure though.
Communication rather than Ultra Ball?
And I was thinking Random Receiver rather than Cheren.
I noticed anytime I get Cheren I never use. Id rather Juniper or N in some cases.

RE: Raquaza EX/Emboar Deck Help

Please add the card number and set for each of the cards in your deck. Thank you :)

I used Entei EX and frankly it doesnt really help much. sure, getting fire energy from the discard pile is cool but it doesnt really rise up to expectation. yes you could go with 4 retrieval I USED to do that too. but it kinda made the deck clunkier so I only put in 3. You also have a super rod that can act as an additional retrieval.

Communication rather than Ultra Ball?

discarding cards in a deck that centers its strategy on emboar isnt really good. you'd want to waste cards at a minimum.

Random Receiver is good actually, so if you think cheren is slowing you down, then by all means take it out. He works greatly with mine though, so it's totally your call.

RE: Raquaza EX/Emboar Deck Help

As much as I loooove the concept of this deck, it just doesn't work.
The only good partner for Emboar was Reshiram/EX. Without it it has a LOT of difficulty setting up.
But, since I'm here to critique.

Add back those cards you removed except Emolga and a Tepig, you'll need them.
So:
+ 1 Emboar
+ 1 Tepig
+ 1 Rare Candy

3-1-3 is standard Emboar line.
You need some Mewtwo and Norm. Rays too:

- 2 Fire
- 2 empty spots

+ 1 Mewtwo EX
+ 3 Rayquaza.

To help prevent death from Hydreigon/Chomps.
Scrap the Ultra balls and a Cheren for 2 Emolga and a lightning.

- 2 Ultra Ball
+ 1 Cheren
+ 1 Lightning
+ 2 Emolga

This is to make sure you get a T1-3 Quaza/Emboar
This is all that is needed. If it does well tell me, as I like Emboar variants :)

Please add the card numbers and sets for each of your Pokémon. Thank you :)
