It took a couple battles but I made the team successfully win a national dex battle. I would like to point out that I did not use mega evolution or any z crystals. One battle I literally only lost because I only got a 35% damage using Energy Ball when the previous Energy Ball I did 39% and because FireLizard was so kind as to give me 4 Pokemon weak to electric types, I got swept by Zeraora.
Here is the Team I ended up using:
Garchomp @ Yache Berry
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Poison Jab
- Swords Dance
Yache Berry Garchomp was incredible in the past with Swords Dance so it seemed like a good set to use. Even though my team is half types that are immune to Sand Storm, giving up a move slot for that was just too much. That is also why I chose not to go mega.
Kabutops @ Assault Vest
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Waterfall
- Brick Break
- Stone Edge
I had debated back and forth on using Weak Armor instead of Swift Swim, but thought Swift Swim would be more effective because it was something I could control. I chose to go all out offense with Kabutops because it doesn't have a lot of defenses. I went for Assault Vest because that way I have a chance of surviving thunderbolts.
Mantine @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpA
Mild Nature
- Aqua Ring
- Gunk Shot
- Scald
- Ice Beam
Mantine is hard to work with. It didn't seem to have Roost available as an option nor Barrier / Acid Armor to improve its lower defense stat. I accidentally picked mild nature and would use bold next time. Aqua Ring compliments leftovers recovery and also gives me a chance to stall some weaker moves.
Farfetch'd @ Leek
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Knock Off
- Close Combat
- Defog
Farfetch'd I heavily considered using Eviolite and then going 252 in both defenses and then running a Roost / Dance set. Then I remembered that it has almost no speed. With 2 Pokemon weak to Stealth Rock and the chance the foe could use Toxic Spikes, running Defog was a must.
Shiftry @ Leftovers
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leech Seed
- Substitute
- Energy Ball
- Dark Pulse
I opted to go for a SubSeed set on Shiftry to try and force switches. This also can give a chance to set up a substitute off a predicted switch.
Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 224 HP / 252 SpA / 32 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Stealth Rock
- Rain Dance
- Thunder
I needed a Stealth Rock user so Jirachi ended up becoming that. I opted for Rain Dance because of having two Water-types on my team. This also gave me access to Thunder which has a 30% chance of causing paralysis instead of just 10% like Thunderbolt. It also effectively eliminates the fire weakness of Jirachi. Since I am running a setup / lead type of set, running a lot of HP was important instead of a ton of speed.

The next player will need to use these Pokemon:
Latios
Swampert
Salazzle
Sylveon
Galvantula
Meganium
This should be really fun and let you try out a bunch of cool stuff.
