Hi guys, I am coming back to the game after about an 18 month break caused by the game being too expensive and going off to school. I am back now and have decided to restart. I thought I understood the metagame pretty well until I saw an analysis of the Japanese Nationals (AKA what we can expect next rotation.) I know how Raikou/Rayquaza, Darkrai/Hydra, and other decks work, but I was really confused by others. Can someone please explain the following deck concepts that did well in Japan: Groudon EX/Stunfisk, Empoleon/Accelgor, and Ho-oh EX/Terrakion. Thanks in advance!

PS If I posted this in the wrong location please let me know!

Hello there and welcome back to the game! To get caught up with the other players, you can visit this thread in case you don't know the current meta decks out there. Don't worry, as soon as the new set comes out in August, the mods will be updating the thread.

Don‘t worry about those Japanese decks and how they compare to the current meta, Japan is already playing BW-on while we still have the HGSS block.

But to answer your other questions, Empoleon/Accelgor is probably designed to trade off incredibly favorably against EX‘s by hitting them with Accelgor first to paralyze them, then finishing them with Empoleon. Groudon/Stunfisk is probably a generic Groudon + secondary non-EX variant, but I‘m not sure because I haven‘t seen the list. Ho-oh/Terrakion works by quickly setting up a Ho-oh through discards effects and its ability, with Terrakion as a secondary attacker, meta counter and “seventh prize“. Using any combination of EX‘s and normal pokemon with a total worth of seven prizes cleverly means your opponent will have to expend more resources than necessary to win, hence the term “seventh prize“.

Thank you, I have since found out about Groudon but still wondered about Empoleon. I am looking at the Japanese decks (BW-on) because the next time I get to a tournament, that will be the meta. Thanks again for your help!

I'd like to look at that link as well, but I'm getting the "not accessible page". Is there anyway I can look at that?

Hi there! Welcome back to the game and I hope to see some of your posts in the deck garage. My advice to you would be to pre-order some of the hyped cards such as garchomp if you possibly can and read these forums or some other source to read up on the next format. Get staples such as Juniper, N, Pokemon Catcher, Random receiver, and more. Also, when the prereleases begin make sure to hit up at least two and stock up on the next set's cards. Other than that don't speculate too much cause the meta game is ever changing from Japan to the U.S. Hope this help!
