The new printing of Defender in English apparently does not reduce self-inflicted damage (the older one did). I'm presuming it's an oversight since the Japanese reprint is the same as the original from Base Set.
However, an errata has not yet been released, so play Defender as if it didn't reduce self-damage at this time.
