Shaymin CotD

Hey everyone and this is TyphloWolf reviewing Shaymin from Unleashed.
I will be going over his HP, Poke-Power, attacks, typing, weakness and resistance and so far how he has his uses in the current metagame.

HP

Let's firstly start on this little flower's health. Now I'm looking at the current metagame and do you know what this basically means? You must know that the grounds are now ruled by big Basics and what I mean by that is when you even think of using our guy over here, expect it to be tossed around by Mewtwo EX, and the dragon brothers( Zekrom, Reshiram, and Kyurem). So think twice before stuffing this in your next ZPST deck as this card can be quite unforgiving to your resources. Not to even mention it's cookie treat for the bulking basics with Catcher.

Right now in a format like this, simply a little guy sporting just 70 HP is quite crossing the borderline from mediocre to garbage. In my terms, that low HP would be immediately placed in the useless tier and ZPST is now pretty much long gone. We have moved on the new, improve one which is ZekEels.
And by then Shaymin would be screaming you can't leave me! Nope, sorry boy but this format just can't afford to resurrect ZPST due to the rather high damage output however, keep your hopes up cause we might find other uses for you.

Poke-Power

Now let's move on to his power. In the previous one, his HP doesn't look too good but hopefully this one will shed some hope for Shaymin.
His power actually lets you on the moment you play him from your hand, you get the freedom to move around your energy. That kind of move is versatile.
Now immediately, people will now start thinking of ZPST but consider other decks as well! Six Corners or more known as CAKE includes Shaymin alongside Electrode. In my mind, I can already see a few applications for Shaymin.
In ZPST, this guy is used mainly for his ability to move the energy to Zekrom, in CAKE it's almost the same except for a few ones.
Firstly, while ZPST focuses on Zekrom only, in CAKE, it focuses on all Pokemon.
What do I mean by that? It means that Shaymin would be better off if it can contribute to as many Pokemon as possible since his Poke-Power controls all the energy in your field. One of the decks I can see him considered in being used is the Truth. While technically the Truth doesn't have an energy accelerator, the original list can utilize Shaymin to the fullest using Rainbow energy and the standard ones too.

So now repeat after me, Shaymin is at his fullest if he can interact with the whole Pokemon and field.

Attacks

Now, do I even need to go over this? His attack is so horrible it makes me eyes bleed out. 30 damage? In a format with big basics? and heal 30 damage?
If you really wanna find a use for the healing effect, just toss Bellossom and Serperior together into the sandwich. Two Stage 2s is a pain in the neck having to get them out. Don't even bother using his attacks, just stick together with the honey he's offering.

Typing

Shaymin's afraid of fire so as much as possible, keep him out of it. But for him, luckily this format's BDIF is EelZone or possibly even ZekEels.
Not much to say here but if you think of using him in a deck, keep your guard up when facing Reshiram decks.
So now for my opinion, his typing is okay at the moment. Unless the future sets don't have any presents for Reshiram that is.

Resistance

Now I'm thinking, What would be this format's famous ground type behemoths?
I know! It's Terrakion, Landorus, Machamp and Donphan!
These guys' damage output are pretty much big when facing others, but for him just mix Eviolite together with the resistance and you have yourself a treat!
But in case one of them get's KOed, you have your EX friend(Shaymin EX) to get revenge on them. Thumbs up for his resistance.

Summing it Up

To sum it all up, Shaymin is not at his best when he is just solo with his helpless 70 HP. He is instantly Catcher bait and easy prize.
This card was made famous alongside his long-gone partners of ZPST for being able to move energy on the electric beast.
But still, I can't shrug off the feeling that his Poke-Power still has some potential left in it. Big-time potential that ZPST might one day be resurrected.
His attacks are very horrible, makes my eyes bleed out every time I see it.
his typing in my opinion is still a bit on the iffy side, but the resistance is quite nice. So overall, I think I'm gonna give Shaymin a rating of 6.5 because of the number turns this card can last but also for the hope that he might one day come back on the spotlight.

Thanks for reading this review and happy building!

Typhlo over.

1. What is the purpose of this card? Does it bring anything special to the table?

As with all cards with sub-par attack, it's going to be all about the poke-power / ability.

Shaymin's purpose is simple - playing him onto your bench grants you the opportunity to move all of the energy cards on your field however you wish. The possibilities are endless!

2. What kind of combos or decks would this card do well with?

First, let's take a look at the cards that allow you to use Shaymin's ability multiple times during a battle. The two most prevalent ones are Seeker and Super Scoop Up. Seeker doesn't see as much play nowadays since it requires you to sacrifice your supporter for the turn, which in most circumstances is not viable. Super Scoop Up, however, has been seeing play in decks ever since it was released! As of the time of this post, decks like Troll and SPAM (Shaymin Pachirisu and Mewtwo) make large uses of both Shaymin and Super Scoop up.

Shaymin is used for two reasons - to be able to move energies in a pinch around to take advantage of the situation (both defensively and offensively), and to be able to move a grand amount of energies to an attacker in the first turn alongside Pachirisu. Because of this, Shaymin finds his way into decks that do not have a premier type of energy acceleration (such as Eelektrik and Celebi Prime), due to it's great ability to keep decks that take their time attaching energies aggressive with the ability to attack at any point.

3. Final Thoughts

Shaymin is just an overall great card. This review is a little bit shorter than most, mainly because Shaymin's concept is simple and strong enough to not need much explanation. And on the flip side, it can be splashed into virtually every deck, which would take far too long to cover! It sees play in today's most recent format, it saw play in the metagame of the past (Six Corners, ZPST), and will probably continue seeing play until it is rotated out for the upcoming season.

Card Score: 8/10
Card Art: 4.5/10 (I get an overall "meh" vibe from this card's art.)
