Should Ash Catch A Legendary Pokémon?

Ash has often had special connections with Legendary Pokémon. Up until the DPP series, I felt like Legendary Pokémon shouldn't be caught. But after a trainer using both Darkrai and Latios I had a change of heart.

When watching the BW series, I hoped for Meloetta to stick with Ash, but sadly she left. She wasn't overpowered, and I think she would have been a great addition to Ash's team.

How do you feel about catching Legendary Pokémon in the anime? Should Ash catch one? Which Legendary Pokémon would fit him best?

Please elaborate on your point of view and refrain from only posting the name(s) of Pokémon you want to be caught.

I always thought Ash should get Entei.

That's interesting. Although Meloetta has higher Base Stats; the Legendary Trios always seem more "Legendary" to me than many other Legendary Pokémon, by having a bigger part to play in nature itself. Personally, I don't like it when those type of Legendary Pokémon get caught.

Pokémon like Deoxys, Meloetta, Jirachi, Shaymin, etc. are rare and Legendary Pokémon, but to me it doesn't seem like they are required to keep balance in the Pokémon world.

I do get that feeling from Pokémon like Arceus, Mew, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Lugia, Ho-oh, Regigigas, Celebi, and the Legendary Trios. I don't like these Pokémon to be caught, because I believe they're supposed to be free. Having trainers catch them destroys their image of Legendary Pokémon for me.

Why do you want Ash to have Entei? And what are your views on catching Legendary Pokémon in general for the anime?

"Should Ash catch one?"
First of all, if he can't win a League, how could he catch a legendary?
Like I've said in another thread about a "more serious/mature anime", Ash meets lots of legendaries but then it's like he forgets all about them. I mean, Ash met ARCEUS! At least there should have been some kind of reference in the series or some episode to highlight that.
So why would he catch a legendary? Just to brag?
Besides, seeing someone with legendaries makes them less interesting, less appealing. When I've watched that guy in the Sinnoh League with Latios and Darkrai, not only it was a cheap move to kick Ash out of the League, but them I though: "how could those Pokémon be captured by some emo-gothic-mute guy!?". Like @Drohn said, I also think that they're supposed to be free. In the games, I used to go after every legendary that I could, but recently and since after capturing I just left them in some pc box, I just let them being in their own places.

Also, If he were to catch a legendary, he would most likely use it the "wrong way", wether it would be by using it too much or only that one, or by forgeting about it. Ash with a legendary seems that it would be like giving a rocket-launcher with infinite ammo to a teen. We're talking about a guy that goes fight Elesa with only one Pokémon and if it weren't for her kindness by letting him go get other Pokémon, he would lose the battle simply because he didn't have any other Pokémon with it. Duh! I know it's the producers fault by making him the way he is, but adding a legendary while keeping Ash this way is like...like...I can't even imagine how much more ridiculous the series would get.
The kids probably would love it...

RE: Should Ash catch a Legendary Pokémon? How do you feel about catching Legendary Pokémon in the anime?

I don't really feel like Ash should catch one. It doesn't matter if its underpowered, it still means that he has the only one of that kind of Pokemon...

Ash in the Anime always gave me a feeling that I could relate to Ash (I really just lied to myself saying I was exactly like him... I was 6, get over it)... And that he seemed like the average kid. If he caught a legendary all that to me would be gone. He would just become an over powered cocky kid with a OU legendary...

RE: Should Ash catch a Legendary Pokémon? How do you feel about catching Legendary Pokémon in the anime?

Would I want Ash to catch a legendary? Heavens no. But would I be against? Absolutely not.

That may be confusing so I'll explain. Ash has all these bonds with legendary pokémon (in the movies, and in regular episodes) and he makes legitimate connections with them, like he does most of his other pokémon (Treecko comes to mind because I just watched that episode where he catches it after trying to help Treecko water the old tree). Rarely does he capture a pokémon where he didn't have some sort of bond with (seriously I can't think of one other than the Beedrill he gave away that he didn't bond over something). Since he has these connections with all pokémon he meets, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to catch a legendary pokémon at some point. Many other characters have legendaries (Tobias, & the guy with the Articuno), granted they aren't the main characters and they have those legendaries to give Ash terrific challenges.

Ash may have the same mindset as Drohn that certain pokémon should be free so the legendaries can keep balance in their ecosystem. If he did catch one it should only be Shaymin, or possibly Heatran.

Why Shaymin? Shaymin isn't very strong or intimidating (in the anime at least) , especially the one the gang helped get to the other Shaymin so it could migrate while in 'Sky Forme.' (Granted that Shaymin had a strong bond with girl protecting it.) That episode also proved that Shaymin isn't that rare, and capturing one wouldn't create a great imbalance in an ecosystem.

Why Heatran? Though I'm unclear on how many Heatran have appeared in episodes (only ones I can think of is the Ranger episode in D/P and the Arceus movie), there is just this strange feeling that there are many of them residing in volcanoes and mountains throughout the pokémon world. I think they help regulate the volcanoes they reside in, but then again I could be wrong and they just live there because of it being so damn hot in them.

RE: Should Ash catch a Legendary Pokémon? How do you feel about catching Legendary Pokémon in the anime?

I think that he should catch at least one Legendary Pokemon, even if its one of those Pokemon that are multiple of such as the legendary dogs\cats\beast, the golems, lugia, celebi, jirachi ( there was an episode with a baby lugia, which sucks since you can't breed them in the game).
[private]Edited to correct grammar and make the sentence understandable (hopefully I understood what he meant correctly, it wasn't easy) *Drohn
so I think that he should catch at least one pokemon right I mean how else even if its one of those pokemon that are multiple of such as the legendary dogs\cats\beast, the golems, lugia, celebi, jirachi ( there was an episode with a baby lugia, which sucks how you cant breed them on the game).

If Ash does decide to capture a legendary, it will be in Kanto. The only known Kanto legendaries are Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres. With the exception of Mewtwo and Mew. If Ash ever does decide to capture a legendary though, I think it should be Jirachi, who really doesn't have a "bigger role," like some of the other legendaries.

RE: Should Ash catch a Legendary Pokémon? How do you feel about catching Legendary Pokémon in the anime?

It would feel strange to have a main character with a Legendary. Maybe if it just traveled with them (permanently until the end of the series) that would feel a bit less awkward, but the idea still seems a bit extreme.

Just been watching some old stuff and the starly he caught at the start of sinnoh didnt exactly have a bond with him. Great point though, a lot of the time they just choose to follow him.

He should catch a ho oh as it was the first legendary he ever saw when leaving pallet town. Maybe if it was a young one it wouldn't be too overpowering in battles and he could release it as it got a bit older for whatever reason the writers decide.

I think him catching a legendary could shake the anime up a bit. I have to admit that episode where team rocket annihilated the zapdos at the lake that healed electric pokemon or whatever, all i could think was "SOMEBODY THROW A BALL AT IT!!!! QUICK! BEFORE IT RECOVERS!!" Lol would have been a bit silly though considering no one actually "battled" it

RE: Should Ash catch a legendary Pokémon? How do you feel about catching legendary Pokémon in the anime?

I feel like in the Black & White movies when he got Reshiram/Zekrom, he should of kept one. Come on, he was chosen by them! Or Lugia because he tamed him.

RE: Should Ash catch a legendary Pokémon? How do you feel about catching legendary Pokémon in the anime?

Unless his Pikachu can turn into a Legendary, then no. It's just going to get ignored and put in Oaks.

RE: Should Ash catch a legendary Pokémon? How do you feel about catching legendary Pokémon in the anime?

After losing against Darkrai and Latios in the Sinnoh League he probably should've.

I was always against catching legendary Pokémon in the anime in general until others started using them. I feel like Ash should get one too now.

It's sad that Meloetta didn't stay with Ash, but other Legendary Pokémon he could possibly catch are Shaymin or Lati@s. Of both there were multiple seen in the anime or movies, so it wouldn't be too strange for Ash to catch one eventually.

Lugia could turn into a super overpowered Pokémon, but I definitely think it would have been nice if he caught a younger Lugia that wasn't too powerful yet.

I've changed my mind - Ash should indeed catch a legendary and it should be Zekrom. Blob55 reminded me that Zekrom ended up forgotten in the Isshu seasons and it also fits Ash, since it would become the new hero of Ideals and an end to the series would have to be made: Ash will win and his Ideal come true or like in every other League except for Orange, he'll lose! :p

I would not want that ever. It goes against all of my headcanons about the Pokemon world when someone owns a legendary. To me, a legendary is supposed to be legendary. That means it is stuff of myths and something everyone thinks is a story. Seeing them is a magical thing. Owning them would snuff out all of the magic feeling about legendaries. I enjoy the development of the mythos and would like to keep legendaries legendary.

No.
Why should he??
He has a legendary-like charizard.
Thats it.
Moreover, if he has a legendary it would definitely be a stupid move. Because if he wins, the viewers would say that he won because he owned a legendary, not on his own strength. And if he loses people would find it senseless as a legendary lost to some normal pokemon.
Overall, its better for Ash to not have a legendary pokemon.

I don't think Ash should catch any legendaries, but I sure wish he'd catch pokemon more often.

Don't necessarily disagree there Oreo. I have already commented twice on the fact that Ash has yet to catch a grass type in Kalos, my money being on a Skiddo if it ever happens.

I would find Ash catching Hoopa quite fitting, for some reason. Probably due to their 'kiddish' nature, and Hoopa's 'unimportance'.
