Smoking

Both of my parents smoke, my grandparents smoke, and a few friends at school smoke. I'm never going to smoke, because I have asthma, but I don't get mad when people smoke around me. If they want to smoke, fine.
I think most of the anti-tobacco stuff is exaggerated, and I hate it everytime a new law comes out against smoking.

Smoking is on the downfall. The old generation is dying, and so is most of the smokers. The best thing we can do is keep the young people from keeping the "tradition".

Yup, you can't really blame the older generations. My parents used to smoke, back then nobody knew it was that bad and causing problems to your lungs, they both quit a looong time before I was born.

Yes DarthPika I know what you mean, at my school they're smoking in front of the main entrance, only going outside forces you to walk through the smoke... It's forbidden to smoke in front of the entrance, sadly our teachers aren't that strict in those rules.

If you smoke inside you get your cards smelling like smoke and nobody wants to play you. I bought some cards from ebay one time and when I opened the package you could just smell the smokey cards. Nasty right

According to recent studies, EACH ciggarette you smoke takes 15 minutes off your life. Some people smoke 2 packs a day. Thats 10 hours off a day. For consistant smokers, that means year(s) off their lives. I've noticed older people (like my grampa) think that they are old, so they should get the most out of their time left on earth. They don't realize how much modern technology can help them.

Spending hundreds on something that you burn for no reason at all?

I won't be paying for them, so it's no cash out of my wallet. The others might be factors, albeit small.

dmaster out.

The sad thing is, is that you guys help pay for cigarretes, every day, I do to.
One of the Larrgest companies that support Cigarrates and smoking is Nabisco.
Nabisco supports,
Oreos
Chips Ahoy
Ritz
Cheez-its
and many other favorite family snacks.
The only reason smoking is so popular and isnt getting bankrupt, is because its being supported by family snacks. My family hasn't had Oreo's,Cheez-its,Cjips ahoy, ritz...
We havn't had those things in at least to years because of that fact.I would like to see you try to stop smoking that way.

Smoking will probably never be banned as you guessed it, it generates money. If it keeps doing so then there is no reason to stop selling it.

The reason not to do it is because a few smokes here and there is all that takes to get you addicted to the stuff. What's to gain by doing it? Getting sick? Smelling horrible? Having bad breath all day? Poisoning your lungs? Spending hundreds on something that you burn for no reason at all? Getting sick if you ever want to quit? No thanks...

Weight gain should also be added to the list...the average quitting smoker gains 10 lbs. upon quitting.

Seriously, smoking is bad for you on sooooo many levels it's ridiculous. You get lung problems. You get heart problems. You smell bad. Your house and everything in it smells bad. You have disgusting teeth. You pay loads of $$$ for it. You are becomes horribly addicted to it. You kill innocent people. I could go on with that until next week, but I think you all get the point.

On the plus side, smoking rates have gone down in the past decade due to widespread education about the negatives of smoking. Quitting is also slightly easier now, thanks to research.

I'm glad only 1 person in my family smokes, and I see her only once a year anyway, so no big deal for me.

Most older people don't want to live too much longer. A number already have medical problems that aren't easily treatable even with modern technology. (Read: cancer and heart disease) Most of them just want to live their last years how they want, not undergoing numerous medical treatments that may only give them a few extra years in their 80s.

Besides, most older people don't care too much for most modern technology anyway. How many 70 y/o do you see texting on a BlackBerry and dancing to the music on an iPod?

That said, I will agree with you on saying that it is mainly the older generation that smokes now. The likely cause of this is because the younger people have grown up with knowing the negatives of smoking. Older people....not so much.

My mom is the only one that smokes in my house, but from what she last told me, she hasn't smoked in 3 weeks.

I have never touched any form of nicotine be it cigars, cigarettes, not even the gum. :p
I do not intend on smoking, as it is both extremely bad for yourself, but bad for others as well. I really would like to smoking banned, to be honest. I don't see why it is legal to slowly kill yourself and make others have to smell "second-hand" smoke. It is incredibly stupid to smoke, and I am not stupid. :D

P.S:
No offense to anyone who smokes. These are just my opinions, and I have nothing against people who smoke.

I crave Oreo's so much now...
but I know that those give money to smoking...
So I cant eat them...

Then I guess you better stop grocery shopping. I bet majority of the stuff you buy is from exploited workers from third world countries.

is this thread only about tobacco? or can we discuss other things that people smoke?

Well from where I come I can't see a difference... younger people do smoke here even more than older I think. It's because they think other kids do it too, so it must be cool. Most of them quit a few years after it though. Older people...not so much.
