Always wanted to go to one back in the beginning of the tcg, got out for about 9 years and now I'm back in right before HGSS drops. Really looking forward to hitting a local prerelease tournament on the 6th.

MY question is, how should I approach deckbuilding in a prerelease setting? Since I got back in I've been running a Mightyena deck, so I don't really have a great idea of what kind of energy ratio to use, I was thinking on average maybe 10 for a 40 card deck? Obviously it will be affected by what kind of trainers I manage to pull, but basically I'm wondering if anyone could just give me some general advice on how to approach it so that I might do a little better.

Well, usually in a prerelease setting you will end up have about 15-20 energy. Its a lot, I know. But thats due to the lack of trainer cards.

HOwever, HG/SS is one of those sets that DOES have lots of new trainers and supporters. So you might get lucky and have 4-6 trainers to use.

As always, set up your pokemon first as they are the core of the deck.
Then fit in whatever trainers you can/want.
Lastly, the energy.

FOr me, a pre-release setting is never for winning or losing, its about just getting new cards.
So I wouldnt be too worried about it either.

Its going to be my first prerelease as well XD can't wait!

Just one question, I know you get the 6 packs to use for your deck, but how do you get the extra 2? I was wondering if I could sign my gf up too and get some more packs lol. Does she have to do anything to get them?

Hope the dates get announced soon =x HGSS is being released in like 3 weeks.

You get the extra 2 packs when you turn in your energy at the end of the tournament.

A bunch of locations and dates have been released, just not on the official site for some reason. I had to find them through a site for card leagues in the region. Facebook might be a good place to start looking, some of the events are up there. I did notice that all the locations hosting HGSS prereleases also hosted Arceus and SV prereleases, so if you can find an old page with info for something like that maybe you could call up the location?

Only looking fwd to getting 4 donphan prime

lol good luck with that

you will need to trade for 4 of them

Anyways, prereleases are all about having fun and battling with pokemon no one would ever us oherwise.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of pokemon that should never be played competitively. Is there any other tournament format that lends itself to the same type of play?

There should be more "pre-release" type fun tournaments throughout the year to co-exist with the POP Leagues. I used to play MLB Showdown (reason I quit Pokemon) and the booster drafts were some of the most fun I've had playing card games. It's such a different atmosphere playing with cards you'd never otherwise play.

In prereleases I've found that your deck will really be a 50/50 ratio of pokemon and energy really bith some trainers fit in there.

Pokemon has been and always will be about having fun. I like the fact that you don't run into a lot of archetype decks in Prereleases. It is really different learning to build a good deck out of sealed cards. You end up running nontraditional looking lines. I have one of the better records for the sealed deck format in my state, you can just ask my PTO.

In my 4 prereleases I've gone 4-0 (SF, 1st tourney ever), 1-3(PL), 2-2(RR), and 5-0(AR). I had to miss the SV prerelease, but anyway I seem to be pretty good at making decks out of scratch. I mean no OP experience and I won my first prerelease. However I usually do bad in actual tourneys because I refuse to use archetypes, I prefer my own rogues, and I just have bad luck. I do have a decent rogue deck today, but still, luck. And my sometimes short attention span. :(
