Let's talk about the characters of this game! Pokémon doesn't have a history of groundbreaking stories, but characters can still be cute additions to the game and can enhance enjoyment substantially when done right. This is a thread to keep details on characters as actual information is released on them, but also for you guys to discuss your crazy theories about the characters as more news is released!

The Characters
The Primary Protagonist

Not a great deal is known about the primary protagonists at this stage, besides that the story begins right after they move to the Alola region, not dissimilar to the story of Generation III. We know that character customisation will return, and that there will be a greater selection of skin tones compared to Pokémon X and Y. In the above picture, and the official art of the characters, the male protagonist is wearing a Popplio shirt and shoes and Litten shorts, whereas the female protagonist is wearing Rowlet shirt and shorts, and Litten shoes. The caps seem unrelated at this stage. This does, however, imply that males might actually have a selection of clothes this time around!

Professor Kukui

Professor Kukui is the official professor of the Alola region, like many tree-named scientists before him. The main difference is this guy's got chill, and has quite a stereotypically Hawaiian style of speech. Similar to Professor Birch from Hoenn, Kukui oftentimes ventures out into the fields to further his study of Pokémon... and has suffered blows from Pokémon in the process. Needless to say he's the uh, hottest Pokémon Professor in the franchise so far! He's very successful in his field, though, as he gives the protagonist an extremely rare kind of PokéDex (and a Rotom to match!) at the start of their journey.

Lillie

An assistant to the professor and seemingly terrified of bridges, little is known about this "mysterious" girl. She's probably the champion, or most people are really hoping she's the primary antagonist, myself included. And @PMJ wants her to be both. Either way, she's reportedly quite pacifistic and doesn't want to see Pokémon fight each other, like Team Plasma's aims in Generation V. She loves to devour books, which would explain why she's so skinny.

Hau

Hau is Sun and Moon's version of Shauna, basically. The Japanese starters advert parodies him as someone welcoming the primary protagonist into their new home (what Shauna did), and you are completely forced to be their friend whether you want to or not. Like Shauna, him being given a Pokémon is also justified by the fact that he "really really loves them :3". The only unique thing about him which we know so far is that he has an irrational love of malasada, which is a version of Portuguese doughnut originating from the Madeira Islands. Why is it an irrational love? I've had them, and they're damn horrible; way too sugary! It's also kinda random considering Portugal has very little to do with Hawaii, but maybe it'll make sense eventually? ;)

Hala

We know like, nothing about this guy. He's old, and stereotypically Hawaiin. He gives the players their Pokémon to the point of sending them out himself, so it can be presumed that he has something to do with Professor Kukui. They appear together in trailers, and Hala is another kind of Hawaiin tree. He doesn't have released official art yet, so he's probably not super important.

Just spotted this. The male protagonist is wearing a Team Aqua shirt:

And the girl's hat looks like a volcano erupting, also her purse thing is shaped like a watermelon which is something you eat when it is hot

Hoenn confirmed (again) guys.

Lillie can be the champion and evil villain in my head all I want but hoping for something really deep and intense from Pokemon is just setting oneself up for failure.

Not looking forward to seeing the evil team. Bonus points if they're not called "Team" something.

I'm hoping Males get an actual selection of clothing this time, I adore the male trainer's design.

I'm hoping Lillie isn't the champion or evil team leader, but she probably will be.

Professor JWittz Professor Kukui is certainly hot. He should be cool, though he's not really my type anyways.

It's funny. I never understand the fuss why people fawning over Professor Sycamore. And I still don't get it.

Professor Kukui, oh my! Move over, Sycamore, you're old news!

*swooned*

I can just imagine Lillie having this super cool moment in which she betrays the protagonist and unleashes some crazy force of destruction onto the world, but knowing GF this is most likely not the case, and she probably won't be as edgy as we all hope for her.

Of course that when gamefreak finally decides to give a protagonist the best headgear, they don't make her the one I can play as.

Of course.

At least the girl PC's haircut is nice. I suppose. That... toque, however, is not. It looks like a rooster's crest, for crying out loud.

And everyone dresses so... tropical.

It's an island region. Were you expecting snowsuits?

There's definitely something suspicious about Lillie. I'm not sure if she's part of the evil team per se (they probably don't want to make one of your friends turn evil), but there's clearly more to her.

All I know is Hau and the female trainer are the most adorable trainers I've ever seen!

Also, I can't help but feel like they might be named Estel and Skylar if not Hayley and Apollo. And, maybe in some crazy Fire Emblem alternate reality, they share the name Skylar.

This thread's gonna be all about the "rivals" of Pokemon Sun and Moon. I use sarcastic quotation marks because Pokemon's lately been very loose on the definition of what a rival is nowadays. And the fact that some of these guys might not just be your rivals at all.

So the first guy we meet is this possibly Hawaiian (Alohaan?) kid who's about your age.
He's described to have a big heart, and is super friendly. He chooses the starter weak to your choice, and his favorite food is malasada. And he really, really loves Pokemon.

Next, is a girl named Lillie. Keep in mind, there isn't really anything saying that she IS your rival (at the time of this post), but hey, you never know. She's described as a mysterious girl who assists the Pokemon professor, Kukui, and is a bit of a bookworm. She also doesn't like to battle with Pokemon, strangely enough. Her reasons for assisting Kukui are...personal. So yeah, super mysterious girl here, who may or may not your rival.

What do you guys think of these dudes? Are they cool? Weird? What do you think?

Mod Edit: Merged this with the existing character discussion thread. Thought I'd leave a note because the wording is weird as a regular post in this thread. :p

I like the character artwork of both the male and female playable protagonist (first time since Platinum), but will be playing as the girl character; because that's just my thing.

I never noticed the nods to all three starters in the clothing the PC's are wearing; that's a nice touch.

In terms of Hau and Hala, I'm expecting that Hau is the grandson of Hala, and that Hala is a retired professor with Kukui being his successor, seeing as he looks pretty young than most professors we have seen over the many gens.

A rival is just a character who competes with you at the same goal. When it comes to your travelling companions in recent games, I don't recall Pokemon ever calling them specifically rivals, only referred to as rivals by the community in an attempt to compare them to earlier actual rivals. Characters like Tierno, Trevor, and Shauna were not described as rivals but travelling friends. Calem/Serena on the other hand is certainly the rival of the main PC. Hau could easily be a rival, or just a friend who battles with you occasionally but has their own goal unique from your own. Characters don't have to be snarky or out-right rude (Blue and Silver respectively) to be considered a rival, or a good rival at that.

Hau is just described once again as your friend, he loves to eat malasada and loves Pokemon even more. He could easily be your main rival, all they need to do is give him the same aspiration as you, in that to collect all 8 badges, compete in the Pokemon league, and test your abilities every step of the way to see who is the better trainer. All while stuffing his face with delicious food and being a good friend. What a rival ought to be.

Hau is most certainly not the core rival of the Player Character if he chose a Starter that is weak to yours, but him being a part of a select number of main rivals isn't completely out of the question, though. Bear in mind that back in B/W, Bianca chose a Starter that's weak to yours, while Cheren chose the other Starter that has the upper hand against yours.

I reckon the same thing will happen in Sun & Moon, but we may get a repeat of X/Y and/or ORAS once more in the rival spectrum. This is speculation on behalf of the fact that the other gender for your player character was your main rival in both X/Y and ORAS, but I think it would be shallow to have it go on for a third time. But I do give ORAS credit for possibly developing a closer bond with your main rival, as opposed to X/Y, especially in the Delta Episode/post-game.

Lillie is most likely our new region's N, since he was opposed to Pokemon battling, just like her. N was essentially your third rival, in a sense. He also had ties with the main villain and his team. Lillie may or may not repeat history this time around, but I would like to see her be her own character whose morality can clash with yours and your buddies, who are probably going to be buddy buddies that are not true rival material.
