TCG Gym Challenges!

Given that all eight of the gym leaders there are good players (and you are, right?),

Judging by our combined records, not really. Haha, that's just a joke (if anyone thought taking me seriously was a good idea). We had some rough patches but we're getting back up there.

making a single deck that can beat all eight of the gyms would be almost impossible - indeed, a deck that has favorable matchups against most decks might have an unfavorable matchup against one or two of the others - and given how there are eight gyms, a wide spectrum of decks is possible.

Right, it is very hard to beat all of the leaders, and it's supposed to be. Just like a regular tournament, you'll play against a lot of different decks. The truly good players with decks that are teched to an extent (or just very consistent) are the ones who end up coming out on top. No deck in the format (at least, none of the metagame ones) are a total autoloss to a deck. We let people re-challenge the gyms, so maybe they take a different strategy into the next game, or they get luckier the second time.

So isn't there any other countermeasure you can take to make this challenge reasonable and not have a "sucks-to-be-you-if-you-picked-the-wrong-deck" vibe to it?

This is just the first time we've done this, and there are kinks we do have to work out. I don't think it's unreasonable, but if this turns out to be a big problem, we'll adjust the rules for sure.

Are you quite sure? Would you define autoloss as a 0-100 matchup, or possibly something with a bit more wiggle room, like say 20-80? I'm not totally sold on the bit that there is no deck with any autoloss at all. But I could be wrong.

Mm, fair enough. That makes quite a lot more sense; thank you.

Well I mean autoloss as something that loses every game to a deck when the deck it has an autoloss against gets set up. Even ZekEels can beat Terrakion and Durant can beat TyRam. It just takes a consistent set up and sometimes some luck. Luck is part of the game.

If you count Durant vs. Reshiphlosion as not an autoloss, there are no autlosses-that's as close as you can get to one.

Hey i have an idea what if when someone beats all 8 gyms they become the champion! Then if u have all the badges u can challenge the champ in a best of three for the title of the ultimate tcg master.

I'm pretty sure that idea has already been shot down over Profile Comments (not sure about that though).

I'm not saying its not an autoloss. I'm just saying that even though Reshiphlosion basically counters Durant, Durant can still beat it with a good start and some luck.

Well sure if the Durant player starts with Durant, Collector, energy, tons of crushing hammer, goes first, and the opponent leads with Cyndaquil, some energy, and some Typhlosion and no draw at all then yeah Durant can win. Its possible for any deck to draw a single basic and a ton of energy and get donked, but that doesn't stop the matchup from being an autoloss.

Actually, we're already planning on doing this. We haven't gotten around to announcing it yet, though.

Also, I can think of a worse auto-loss.

If you're playing standard old 1 Solosis BW, 59 Fire Energy and your opponent is playing 4 Mewtwo-EX, 56 Psychic, you're going to auto-lose to them unless they make some pretty bad misplays.

That's not very funny...

Lighten up a little. :) -Cel

Question. Are we allowed to have several outstanding challenges? As in, may I challenge five gyms at once?
