This thread is to discuss the amazing (free) game Team Fortress 2. It is also the #1 war-themed hat simulator in the world.

What is it?
Team Fortress 2 is currently the most played Steam game in existence. It started out as a mod for the game Quake back in 1998. Wildly popular, Valve (developers of the highest rated game of all time, Half Life 2) bought the rights to the mod and hired the creator. Over severals years, the game was developed quietly, and was eventually released in 2007 in The Orange Box. You can play it via Steam.

In Team Fortress 2, you pick 1 of 9 classes to play as, in 3 categories.

Offense-Scout, Soldier, Pyro
Defense-Demoman, Heavy, Engineer
Support-Medic, Sniper, Spy

Each class has a different role, and it can take a while to get used to each class's advantages and disadvantages. There are several strategies to play each class.

What's that you said before about "the #1 hat simulator"?
There is currently a total of 235 hats (excluding the 125 Miscellaneous items). You can obtain the items from crafting, random drops, opening crates, or by trading. Most hats are purely cosmetic items (a few are part of item sets that benefit a certain class who wears the whole set. Although cosmetic items, TF2 has been mildly criticized as being more focused on hats than actual gameplay. Enter any game, and there will always be people trading weapons and hats.

You said this game is free. Does that mean actually free, or pay-2-win?
While there are some disadvantages at being a free player, premium status and free status are almost exactly the same.

How do I become a premium player so I can get all the cool stuff?
All you have to do is buy something from the virtual shop in-game, called the Mann Co. Store. When the game came out, it was worth $10, $20 if you bought it with the 5-game Orange Box. Now that TF2 is free, you can get premium status for as low as $0.36! You get 300 backpack slots, rare random drops, full trading, and more!

Thread Rules
  1. Standard Pokebeach rules apply
  2. You can ask for trades, but don't spam the thread with the same trade request. Trades in TF2 do not count toward your rep thread here (for obvious reasons).
  3. If someone asks for a trade, be fair with your offers. I will be watching for lowballing and scamming.
  4. NO PURCHASES ALLOWED. Take purchases to Outpost or off-site.
  5. Post pics! Screenshots are awesome, especially killcams and loadouts.
  6. Try to keep the discussion TF2 centered. It's alright if you trail off about a certain game promotion or something, but I don't need people arguing about which gun is best in MW3.
  7. Have fun!

I'm not convinced. Why should I play this game?

I tried to play this game on the PC, but even on low graphical settings, it ran at 10 FPS...asdf
Since I have the Orange Box for the 360, I thought I'd just try playing TF2 on the Xbox (LE GASP) last year. There were rarely more than 3 people on each team in a server, and nobody went Medic, so I went Medic. I got 4 kills that round and pushed the team to victory.
I lost interest later on, since I couldn't really get used to the super fast gameplay and the fact that the fanbase for the console version would diminish as time went on.

I had The Orange Box for Xbox, but sold it back to Gamestop due to the lack of players in TF2. Half Life 2 was better on PC, and I already had both episodes for PC. Portal was way too short and the lack of extension mods made me lose interest quickly.

Added rules and junk. Also...

Alright,I'll give this game a shot. But do you have to play it through steam?I've heard that its a pain to use.

D: Where have you hard that? Yeah, it's a Valve game, so it has to be played through Steam. But aside from Offline Mode (something you probably wouldn't want TF2 for), I'd never say Steam is a pain to use.

I've played Team Fortress since it was introduced as a mod for Half-Life. If you've never played Team Fortress or Team Fortress 2, then you aren't living life. If it's 2012 and you haven't played this game yet, then something is wrong with you. And I'm not trolling or trying to be funny: there is something medically wrong with you and it can only be cured by enjoying TF2.

Sounds like you weren't around in 2003. The horror. The horror.

TF2 Warehouse is back up. Added it to Useful Sites.

Also, the huge Steam Summer Sale has started. About 90% of all games on Steam are 75% off. Sale ends July 22.

Last year, there were several achievements from various games that got you a special hat for TF2. There are only 300+ of those hats in existence, and are worth $300 each. No news yet of any objectives to get a special hat, but be prepared.

I've don't TF2 myself, mainly 'cause of how slow my computer is, but my friend plays it. Whenever I go to his house, we'll sometimes play it.

I've watched all the "Meet the.." videos. I suggest anyone who hasnt seen them to watch them. Meet the Pyro was amazing.

That looks really cool, but how much does it cost? Also, you can go ahead and put me in the players list, since the game is pretty fun.

GENTLEMEN.

Is anyone else wearing "The Familiar Fez" with a Bowtie? A guy gave me a "Your Eternal Reward" named "Sonic Screwdriver" for free, so it was my obligation. ;)

EDIT: Corn Bread, it is free.

Anybody who's worried about performance, I was running at 10-20 fps but then I downloaded the maxframes config from this site, and now I run from 40-60 consistently. Try it.

I'm relatively new to the game, and pretty bad, but it's a very fun game that I can't wait to improve at so I enjoy it even more.

I'm ninjasaur on Steam, add me if you want I guess.

This. My bump was from 3 fps to 17 fps. :p

But yeah, if you're running something with even a semi-discrete video card (i.e. almost anything but Intel) and run this, you should be well off. Probably.

I like the game alot and i think it might be the best game on Steam, but some game might walts in and take the spotlight (i dought that will happen though)

Yeah its definately an older game. But it has gained such a huge fanbase the only thing I could see taking it down is the new counter strike.

I tried to play TF2 on my laptop (my only computer, mind you. ><) and it almost crashed on my PC that can't even run Minecraft. I'm such an idiot for even thinking it would work. I want to play the game SO incredibly bad.

Set it to the lowest possible settings. The Source engine is naturally programmed to set itself at native settings for best performance. Strange how your computer crashes. At lowest settings it should run flawlessly on almost every (possible) computer in existence.
