We've been graced with a coveted invitation to the largest inter-forum event on the whole entire Internet -- and it's a contest of something we're good at, too: mafia! The invite even gives us a template OP to use, so whenever it says "I", imagine the contest organisers are talking to you! :U I'm incredibly excited about this and can hardly contain myself, so I hope you guys are just as excited:

So, what is this championship?
The Mafia Championship is an annual online tournament series that pits representatives from various forum Mafia (aka Werewolf) communities against one another as they compete to determine the Internet’s greatest forum Mafia player. Each participating community democratically elects one person to represent them and become their “Champion”.

Season 1 ran in 2013-2014, while Season 2 and Season 3 ran in 2015 and 2016, respectively. As of Season 3, a total of 160 communities have been represented in the Mafia Championship, making it the largest cross-forum event on the Internet.

I hope that all this sounds very exciting to you guys :)

Electing our champion, and whether to be the champion yourself:
If you agree to participate, the deadline for selecting your representative is April 23. If this is too soon for you, just let me know :)

The games will take place on Mafia Universe.

Important notes
  • You may decide yourselves how you want to elect your representative, but we highly recommend some sort of democratic process (public nominations followed by a poll usually works out well). <-- More details on this at the bottom!
  • In addition to electing a representative, you should also name an alternate who will be asked to step in if the first choice needs to back out.
  • Your representative should be prepared for having to read upwards of 500 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. Additionally, there’s a requirement that each player must make at least 10 posts per Game Day. Only active players should apply/participate. I repeat: Your chosen player needs to be able to promise a good amount of activity on a daily basis.
  • Relevant only to communities that participated last season: Season 3 Finalists are not eligible to play again this season.

2. Season 4 Format
The tournament structure
  • 150 communities will participate, each sending one representative.
  • 10 Qualifying Games will be played consisting of 15 players each. I.e. every representative plays in one Qualifying Game. 1 player will advance directly to the Finale Game from each Qualifying Game. The players themselves vote post-game to determine who is deserving of advancement. I.e. 10 of the 15 finalists will be found this way.
  • A Jury consisting of finalists from Season 3 will along with me discuss and vote to determine a group of 30 wildcard players who will play in 2 Semi Final Wildcard Games. From each of these two games, two players will directly advance to the Finale Game. The last finalist is selected by the Jury
  • The Finale Game is played. Once it has completed, the players vote to determine who shall hold the title of Season 4 Champion.

The setup

MOUNTAINOUS:
12 Vanilla Townies
3 Mafia Goons

We’re going back to basics for Season 4. Each season we’re changing it up, and for this season it’s finally time to play without any power roles or abilities at all. Pure mafia. You have only yourself and your reading/bluffing abilities to count on.

Relevant mechanics info
  • Day start.
  • Deadline Lynch w/ Option for Majority starting Day 2. I.e. when day timer runs out, person with most votes will be lynched. However, day can also be ended early (starting Day 2) if there is ever a majority of votes on one person.
  • If there is a tied lynch, one of the tied players will be randomly lynched.
  • No outside communication. I.e. you may not contact the other players outside of the thread (unless you are Mafia and wish to speak with your teammates).
  • Phase Lengths and Deadlines will be up to the players themselves (I’ll organize them into games with deadlines that suit their preferences).
  • Thread is locked during Night Phases.

3. Season 4 Timeline

There will be 10 Qualifying Games, and your representative plays in just one of these. They will have start dates during the months of May and June. So in other words, as long as your representative can play sometime during that period, they should be good and I’ll make sure they get scheduled into a game that suits their schedule well. I.e. if your rep is busy until June, that isn’t a problem.

Kind regards,
@Thingyman
So, how are we going about nominating our champion -- and their backup substitute, if they need to be used? Well, it will be done in 2 phases, both lasting 24 hours:
Phase 1 -- Do you want to be a champion?
The instructions here are simple! If you've read everything inside the spoiler tags up above and think you are the champion PokéBeach needs, post stating this in this here thread! It really is that simple.

After 24 hours, we will move onto phase 2:
Phase 2 -- Do other people want you to be a champion?
That's right, it's a good ol' fashioned survey! I'll create an anonymous survey and post it in the thread, where everyone can vote for who they want to represent our community at the event. The person who garners the first-most votes gets to be our primary representative, and second-place is their substitute. Pretty simple, eh?

So with that, it's time to get posting!

tagging @Celever @bbninjas and @Camoclone because they seem really good to me, and should sign up. I also might want to sign up, but Ima have to check with my dad first. Probably wouldn't get voted anyways, cuz, I suck. However vanilla mafia is something I've been practicing more so YA NEVER KNOW. But I seriously think one of you three should be our champion

(still not excluding myself from this :p always a smaaaal possibility)

I'm certainly not good enough to be in this competition, but I would always be interested if by some twist of fate the players better than me can't make it. If you ask me, bb, Celever, and Camo are by far the best players we have.

I won't have the time to participate in the championships myself (it'd be quite active and you'll need to be putting a lot of thought and effort into your scumhunting). I'd definitely like to see @Camoclone go -- I think he was interested in similar opportunity before (which unfortunately didn't end up happening for us), and I know he's got experience off-PokeBeach on places such as MafiaScum, which I suspect these championships will be most like them.

Unfortunately I don't think I can participate as I have a busy schedule currently. I appreciate the nominations, though.

My personal nomination is @NinjaPenguin. He's not the best player here but he has the most potential to grow and I think this will be a valuable experience for him. For whoever ends up going I highly recommend preparing yourself by reading some games on MafiaScum. This will be very different from anything you've ever played in before and if you don't you will probably be eaten alive.

I just looked at my schedule and remembered that I will be pretty preoccupied with IRL events during that time period, considering that I'd also have to juggle my own game on here. Since bb and Camo won't participate, I'd go with nominating Celever, with scattered as a replacement.

What is different this time that Raikou is allowing this to happen?

Fiiiiine :U

I was um'ing and ah'ing about whether to try and take part because if I'm honest the timing could be better, but I've been tagged so many times now that I might have to :p

First, let me just say that I'm very excited that you guys will be participating this year! :)

And a little update:

UPDATE ON MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP

Originally, the plan was for this season to feature 135 communities. We will now have 165 participating communities, which means that this season alone we will have more different communities represented than all other seasons combined. Approximately 60 communities are participating for the very first time. Of the returning communities, about a dozen of them are resending a previous representative, while the rest are all sending fresh faces.

As a result of how big this season has gotten, we'll have more games to look forward to than ever before. We will have 11 qualifying games, 2 wildcard games and 1 finale game = 14 games in total.

All kinds of communities are partipating. Besides the sites dedicated specifically to mafia, we have forums dedicated to popular entertainment, sports, poker, board games, online games, video games, role playing, LEGO, personality type testing, stick figure animations, science, atheism, music, mathematics, comics, students, etc. Some of these communities started playing mafia more than a decade ago; Others just started this year.

Despite this being a forum event, we will also have communities that play the game via various chat clients (Discord, Telegram, IRC, custom, etc.) and via webcam (with games often streamed on Twitch.tv). And not least, there are communities centered around mafia game variants that you can buy on Steam (Town of Salem and Throne of Lies).

This season will also have the biggest international scope yet. For the very first time we will have representatives from Romania, Hungary, Chile, Portugal, Ukraine and Czechia as well as our first person representing a Japanese community. We even have our first Native American.

In addition to this, we of course welcome back countries such as USA, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Italy, Indonesia, South Africa and Ireland, meaning that we'll have more than 20 different countries represented in total.

Reminder: If your community hasn't picked a representative yet, I need the name by April 24.

Next update: I am hoping very much I will have all the info I need from all of the representatives by Wednesday at the latest next week. Assuming I do, I will schedule all the qualifying games on this day and get back to you with your representative's start date.

Life advice with Celever #1: Don't have friends. They're inconvenient. I've been out ALL DAY.

Sorry for the late response, but we can still get our representative in before deadline! The survey results will come in tomorrow at this time, or maybe tomorrow morning (GMT), at the very latest.

THE SURVEY CAN BE FOUND HERE!

Oh yeah, don't vote for yourself. I have no way to moderate it whatsoever but like, it's a bit cheap. I'm not voting for myself, anyway. You shouldn't either! :D

Also, it's anonymous. If it weren't anonymous that'd be... strange, actually.

EDIT: OK, this should go without saying, but please only vote once. I can actually see the IP addresses of each respondent (I wasn't aware that this was the case ngl) but now that I've noticed the feature, it's easy to see. You can vote twice if you use an incognito tab thing, apparently, but this doesn't change the IP address. Potentially if you change device you can vote twice, too. However, needless to say I will mill through the votes at the end and discount duplicates -- both of them.

Damn, maybe I should have signed up to add another country to the mix haha :p

Best of luck to our representative though ^w^

And the results are in.....

Our substitute champion for the month is....

Oh my god, I'm the sub. I warned you guys about what would happen, so, uh... Yeah, I hope I can pull myself together for this should it be needed.

Congrats to Celever on being our representative! You'll do great, I know it! We've all got faith in you! :D

During the game, would I be allowed to give you my probably-worthless advice?
