The Pathetic State of PS3 RPGs

For a very long time, I knew that Final Fantasy XIII was going to be released on the Playstation 3. I planned to save up money just to buy a PS3 in order to play that one single game. The Xbox 360 was out of question; FF13 wasn't going to be launched on it. There were a few games that I liked both on the Wii and the 360, but FF13 came first. So I had the PS3 on my wishlist for a very long time.

Then everything changed. Square Enix announced that they were going to release FF13 for the 360.

I was shocked. The Final Fantasy series had been a Playstation exclusive. Now they were going to make it a multiplatform game? I'm sure Sony was both shocked and disappointed with this move. To me, they were relying on this game (and several others, of course) to help them make a comeback. I realised I didn't know much about the seventh-generation consoles and decided to read up on them.

I was horrified. This is why:

I'm a big RPG fan. And I would dare to say that the PS2 was the best console for RPGs.

Final Fantasy X, Shin Megami Tensei, Xenosaga, the Tales series, Shadow Hearts, Wild Arms, Odin Sphere, Grandia, Kingdom Hearts, Valkyrie Profile, Dragon Quest, Suikoden, Radiata Stories, Star Ocean, Dark Cloud, the stupid World of Mana series... I haven't finished naming them.

The PS2 was simply superior to the Xbox in many ways. If I would have considered getting an Xbox, it would have only been for Fable or Halo. Other than RPGs, the PS2 offered many a much wider variety of games for than the Xbox. It was simply much better. The Gamecube was aimed at kids, with only a few good games such as SSBM. Playstation 2 was simply the winner.

Now that's changed.

The PS3 is just sad. The 360 had a large headstart compared to it. The Wii outsells both with its wonderful Wii Sports stuff where you can swing your controllers around like grandmas swinging their handbags at naughty children who stole a quarter from them. 360 sales in Japan were poor at first, but it was mainly because the games on it were not targetted at the Japanese audience.

To me, the Xbox has always been the console made for FPS games. The right trigger is so much easier to press than R1. Bang bang bang. It's easier to press than the left click too. I have never thought of the Xbox as the console for playing RPGs. Until now.

Right now, these are the current PS3 RPGs released:

-The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
-Enchanted Arms
-Folklore
-Marvel Ultimate Alliance
-Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom

Oblivion is fantastic, but it's non-linear. Enchanted Arms is good, but it isn't excellent. Folklore isn't considered an RPG by many anyway. Marvel is... It's superheroes. And Untold Legends is nothing impressive.

Only 5 RPGs out on the PS3 right now. The Xbox 360 has many more. I don't want to list them.

A few of the upcoming RPGs for the PS3 are multiplatform, and most have been/will be release(d) on the 360 first. When comparing multiplatform games, I heard the 360 versions of Call of Duty 4, Devil May Cry 4, and Assassins's Creed were better. I can't say much myself, though.

The PS3 has a serious lack of RPGs that will be coming out. Several of the games whose series were launched on the PS2 previously are now coming out on the 360, such as Star Ocean. Fortunately, White Knight Chronicles, a PS3 exclusive, looks promising. But Star Ocean 4, Tales of Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery were all launched on the 360. I have to admit that I was extremely surprised by Square Enix's so-called betrayal of Sony by making Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery 360 exclusives and allowing FFXIII to be made for it. And wherever Square Enix goes, other RPG developers follow. We have to blame Sony's marketing strategy. A console that is hard to develop on and is more expensive so that it sells poorly.

All along, I have wanted to get a PS3. Now I can't decide between the two. I still prefer the Playstation controllers, and Final Fantasy XIII Versus has no news for the 360. For now, I'll continue to play my PS2, PSP, DS, and a few PC games such as Devil May Cry 4, Assassin's Creed and Halo 2 that I might be buying soon.

I see your points, SNN, about the lack of RPGs on the PS3. First of all, this is a brand new system; don't compare past ones, especially the PS2. If you've noticed, it looks much different. ;/ Second, I think you might want Disgea 3 on your list; it's practically an RPG, and it's one of the best on the system. Think of how all the Xbox 360 owners felt when they announced Final Fantasy wouldn't be an exclusive. They're trying to please everyone. I think if you feel that you deserve it on the PS3, then buy it for the system. If not, well then, that's your choice.

dmaster out.

Excuse me? The Seiken Densetsu (Mana) series isn't stupid... They are some of the best RPG's available. (I personally haven't played anything FROM the World of Mana series, so it might be crappy, but I assure you that the rest of the franchise is nothing but awesomeness.)

The DS one is a joke.

I forgot to specify Action RPG or Console RPG. Strategy RPGs are different.

What about Kingdom Hearts 3 and Pikmin 3 and Animal Crossing 3?(A lot of 3's)
Kingdom Hearts 3 doesn't exist. Pikmin isn't a RPG.

You know, there are many people out there good at making fake trailers.

If not, you're looking at the trailers for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days or Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep trailers that have been "renamed" by fans into KH3. If there's any official KH3, it would be a sequel to KH2.

If you complete KH2 100% you can unlock a trailer for KH3

I agree PS2 was the best definately imo

Xbox 360 took all of PS3s sales through new games like Halo, being out first and add PS3 losing its exclusiveness to most of the games it had. Could you imagine how many Ps3s would of been bought if GTA was released on ps3 then Xbox in a year. From what I see MGS is the only game PS has that I want and it isnt worth buying just one for that. The way I see it is unless Ps3 has a new super crazy idea when the next gaming systems are released it should just step down and give up :(

I did so I saw the Trailer What system will it supposedbly be on(just a guess)?

Yeah Children of Mana was kinda crappy. But play Secret of Mana or Sword of Mana - and tell me the franchise sucks. :p

I don't know about the Ps2 being the best system. I mean I own one and the only reason I got one was for Kingdom Hearts (which is in some ways was overrated) and Devil May Cry. I also own a 360 and it has a few good RPG's like Blue Dragon (say what you want I thought that game was underrated), Eternal Sonata, Penny Arcade (it's a fun little game), Mass Effect, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. But really I think it's stupid that people are crying over the fact that FF13 in going to the 360. Whats the big deal? It's still on the PS3! It's not canceled! So what?! When Devil May Cry 4 got put on the 360 people didn't bi**h that much (except fanboys). It's stupid what people do about these exclusives. Really in my opinion Chrono Trigger beats the sh*t out of all the newer RPG's nowadays and can't wait for the remake of a 13 year old game.
