So, apparently, back in the days of Pokemon Red and Blue, there was this whole hurricane of rumors about hidden secrets in the games. This was understandable, since people didn't have much knowledge as to what was in programming, and of course, there's always going to be the one kid who claims that somebody they know works for Nintendo. However, unlike a bunch of such rumors today, this actually grew to become a huge thing. The secrets that were supposedly hidden somewhere in the game usually involved some sort of Pokegods, which were, as the name implies, extremely powerful Pokemon that could only be obtained through some very long, very complicated code. Some examples of Pokegods were Pikablu, Mewthree, and Flareth. Of course, we know now that these Pokegods don't actually exist. However, I find this topic quite fascinating.

tl;dr: Back in 1st gen., there was this rumor about things called Pokegods.

Here are some links for if you want to learn more.
This is a very long explanation of the whole phenomenon, beginning-to-end
Here is an example of some of the complicated codes involved

What are your thoughts on this topic?

RE: The Pokegod Rumor Phenomenon

Having taken apart the game's code and looked at it at the hexadecimal level, I can safely say there are no PokeGods. Plenty of glitch Pokemon, but no secret monster beasts (I mean, unless you count the very small number of glitchmons with a higher BST than Arceus, but...)

I believed the rumors as a kid, though. Didn't help that I had a cousin who seemingly had "proof" to back up his claims.
"There's a golden Mew in Mt. Silver if you look hard enough and it's totally true because look, I have a golden Magby."
Yeah, kids can be dumb.

RE: The Pokegod Rumor Phenomenon

Ah, I remember these. The first one I heard of was the one in the area with Red. I don't know who started it, but you had to get a team exactly like Red's team, then you had to walk up to him, two steps left, one step forward, one left, then a level 100 Mew would appear.

Obviously it was fake.

RE: The Pokegod Rumor Phenomenon

I remember that someone told me and my friends that you could fish in the lava pond where Groudon nests and catch all sorts of fire Pokemon in level 100. The item was called a "lava rod" and could according to some older kids be found around Slaterport doing some sort of complicated quest. I can't believe how dumb we were back in the day xD

RE: The Pokegod Rumor Phenomenon

Is this a childhood pokemon rumor thread?

Well, my best friend told me in 4th grade, if you beat the elite 4 56 times in pokemon LG/FR, you can get the tickets to deoxys. I gave him my game to help with the E4, surprisingly, he didn't do anything.

RE: The Pokegod Rumor Phenomenon

I sure remember how someone told me that in pokemon gold and silver if you go to the bellsprout tower to the picture of bellsprout with a 100 level bellsprout you can enter inside the picture and fight many level 100 pokemon
I actually got fooled and trained my bellsprout to level 87 then I just gave up. SO WIERD

RE: The Pokegod Rumor Phenomenon

I was the one who told kids all types of pokerumors.

-I told them you could go to Johto after you beat FR/LG

-I told them you can get Celebi if you release your starter and click the ilex shrine. (Crystal)

-I told them that on the 100th mossdeep space counter, Deoxys would appear and fight Jirachi. Then, after the battle, you could catch who ever won. (Emerald)

-I told them if you have all three legendary birds in your party in descending order (articuno first, Zapdos second, Moltres third) Lugia will appear at your house and you can catch it. (FR/LG)

-I told them you could get munchlax and bonsly in emerald if you trade one from pokemon XD.

RE: The Pokegod Rumor Phenomenon

Lol, Sky's a genius. :D I also liked telling weird crap.

-There's a secret cave outside Oreburgh Mine that would take you on top of the mine. (DP)

-You could get on top of Victory Road and catch Aipoms after you beat Palmer five times. (Diamond)

-If you'd use Wish in a battle on 12th August, you could catch a shiny Jirachi on Mt. Coronet. (Platinum)

Yeah, I'm horrible. xD

RE: The Pokegod Rumor Phenomenon

I don't really like questions and theories being answered, leaves a lot to the imagination. When people pull apart the game, to check the coding and what not. It kind of ruins some of the magic, a theory is supposed to be just a theory. Some things are best left unanswered.

RE: The Pokegod Rumor Phenomenon

The rumor that I remember the most was the one in RSE, involving the the scientist in the Mossdeep space center. Every day you would talk to him, he would tell you that the latest launch was a success and that the launch success rate was "X"%, X being a slowly but constantly increasing number. That part is actually true. Now I had been told that once the success rate was 100%, the scientist would ask you if you would ever like to go to space, and that if you said yes you could take a rocket up to the moon, and there you could catch Deoxys, or Jirachi, or both or I don't even know, it was just a rumor. So basically I kept talking to that scientist in my Emerald, hoping to someday go to the moon...

Aside from that one, I was usually too smart to believe the BS rumors I heard. Heck, I was even skeptical about that one, but I do remember it well and I believed it to some extent. But I was definitely never one of those kids spreading the stupid rumors. -_-

Oh, here we go. Yeah, something like this.

I was convinced that if you used self destruct in the water near the power plant on RBY you could open a pokemon garden and catch togepi!
