The TCG Sure has changed a lot...

Hullo folks, I used to play the TCG quite a bit back in Base-Fossil and Neo Genesis, but I'm sadly quite out of the loop on a lot of the new stuff. Anyway, I've had my interest sparked again and downloaded Apprentice with the new expansion. The cards are quite GG.

Anyway, a few things for an old hat like me:

Where can I get a listing of all the new effects like Burn?

How is the metagame hanging these days? I sincerely doubt my old favorite standby Haymaker is that effective anymore (I always liked combining mine with Aero to mess with evolution decks).

Thanks for any help you guys can give me, I should be posting up a deck I just created in Apprentice for review. It looks like a lot of the old standbyes like CS, ER, and GoW have been gutted.

I don't play the game but yes indeed the rules have changed from the way they used to be and that includes Kadabra not being a Pokemon anymore.:)

Even when it first came out its only real benefit was that it could slaughter other Damage Swap decks with Super Psy if you hadn't managed to pull Zam out yet.

Base Gastly and Haunter were terrible though. Fossil fixed a lot of thier problems. /nostalgia.

well, these are the hot decks out there:

metanite

flariados

bandoom

R-gon

MSN

infercatty

DELTA

destiny

for more info, u can go to pokegym and check out their "archtype" forum.

BTW, burn is like poisoned, but u flip during bet. turns, heads = 0 damage, tails = 20 damage. It'll never goes off like poison.

lastly, the format :

aka DX on
now : DX, EM, UF, DS, LM, HP, CG, DF, PK, DP

next season (07 sep onwards)

HP on

HP, CG, DF, PK, DP ...

There aren't too many new effects. Just Burn is the only new one. Confusion has changed a lot. You don't need to flip to retreat, and when you fail at an attack you take damage counters instead of actual damage. That way you don't take 60 instead of 30 if you're weak to yourself, or if you use PlusPower (Or Strength Charm) you don't take 40 or more. Other than that, there's a Imprison and Shock-Wave markers. They're not really conditions though, and only 3 Pokemon in the format deal with them. Gardevoir EX d can place Imprison markers on a Pokemon (Benched or Active), and while Imprison'd a Pokemon can no longer use PokePowers or PokeBodies. Shock-Wave markers don't do anything, they just go with Tyranitar EX's attack. And the last Pokemon that deals with these conditions is Tropius d, and it just removes them.

The Metagame has sorta swayed away from Haymakers-style and back. One of the biggest decks out there is called Destiny, and it's mostly basics like old Haymakers style. It has crazy type coverage and starts attacking by the first or second turn. Other takes on Haymakers are kinda seen in other decks, with techs like Latias EX d, Groudon EX (CG), Kyogre EX (CG), Rayquaza EX d, and Lugia EX just to name a few. Most can abuse energy acceleration and throw down some damage when you get the chance to change the tides of the match. They add a little type coverage as well, and top it all off they're basics. So there's some older elements there.

Mostly today you want a deck to be able to be ready by the third turn. That's not saying you should attack then, but you should be able to at least cope with attacking by then. The most recent thing to hit the metagame is decks to counter Destiny, and it's an approach as simple as sticking two cards in your deck: Mewtwo d, and Rayquaza*. Destiny plays EXs with 90 - 110 HP, and Ray* can really sweep the field. Mewtwo just throws a ton of energy on it, all you need to play is either Fire or Lightning energy, then throw a Holon's Pokemon on it or something.

That's pretty much the basics of whats going on now though. Good luck ^^.

for ur infomation, metanite, R-gon and infercatty are fighting hard to gain the crown named " BDIF" (best deck in format)

anyway, rare candy made stage 2 so playable than those days with pkm breeder. BTW Nintendo weakened the basic pokemons (non-ex that is) so haymaker is not that possible.

Indeed it has...
With the new Diamond & Pearl rules, things has changed a lot because most of us(I think),are already used to the previous rules but since now the rules has changed, we'll have to read the rulebook at times to understand better....

About the new format(HP-DP), some player has started to change their deck to HP-on because some of them want to get use to the new format but there is still a large number(I think) of players that is still playing the DX-on format because the new format will only begin after Worlds 2007 & there are better decks in the current format(ex: Metanite, R-Gon & vice versa)...

Stantler, Lickitung, Mew d, Dialga, Mew (LM), Ditto (Mime, DS), Smeargle (DF), Jynx (UF), Lati@s d (DS), Wobbuffet (LM/PK), Tangela, Sudowoodo (UF), and many of the Unowns are weak?? Not to mention shinings.

One thing that has changed is the way decks are constructed.

Most of the decks in today's game are built around the principle of exploiting a very good combo.

Decks like: MetaNite, Flaridos, Infernape variants, and LudiCargo are all built around getting a combo up and then sweeping your opponent.

The decks from way back when either did nothing to make a combo or were very basic in their way of making a combo.

Take the combo deck "Raindance" for example.
You had Blastoise and..... Lapras? Gyarados?

The new way of building a deck is a lot like the old Damage Swap deck.
Old way: (Just move the damage off of the active pokemon.) Alakazam, Mr. Mime, Chansey, Pokemon Center.
New way: (Use the damage counters against your opponent.) Alakazam, Mr. Mime, Chansey, Dodrio, Tentacool, Pokemon Center.

I think the new rules are meant for faster stratagies for the TCG and also it will add a new twist to the TCG but for most of us the redesign of the cards brings back the old way because of the pokedx number and their level and also their card number. That was the old way before the EX cards came so they brought back the old format but have new rules but it will make it fun to play. Trainers want faster battles aswell as quick stratagies and with the new rules it will make it more interesting for new trainers. I am not a player but I know most of the rules because I have a few theme decks and from experience I have learned some of the rules but never really played the TCG.:)
