Thinking about coming back to the game...

Hey all, I recently picked up pokemon d/p for the gba, and its reignited my old pokemon obsession, so I decided to come back to the game.

Looking at all the new cards and mechanics, I am almost totally lost. I quit just after gym 2 came out :(

Can anyone reccomend a good set to start collecting, or a good strategy to look into?

EDIT: Ive been looking at the crystal guardians set, and Venasaur and Blastoise's abilities really stand out to me. Are there any good strategies involving these guys, and if so, is it competitive against other strategies?
 
i would get DP4 great encounters just because they have useful cards and you will be ableto use them for a long time
 
Either Secret Wonders or Mysterious Treasures, since there are many archtypes that you can use in both sets.

What is the stategy in that? Buy Great Encounters packs, Mysterious Treasures or Secret Wonders. Try a T2 deck beacause they are cheap and are somewhat good.
 
Not to mention that sets are phased out once per year, and it's been about half a year since the last time the sets got rotated. I'd recommend you get the Diamond & Pearl packs (but try to avoid the original Diamond & Pearl set, as its cards aren't as easily comboable) so that you can use them for at least another year and a half.
 
Buy 3 Lavaflow decks (with Magmortar) and a ton of Secret Wonders and Mysterious Treasures boosters and thank me later.
