Hello everyone! Love it or hate it, Charizard ex once again finds itself in a position to be one of the best decks in the format. Charizard placed first and second at the recent Stuttgart Regionals, and often achieves other high placements at other major tournaments as well. If you are a competitor in the Surging Sparks format, Charizard needs to be on your radar.
For all the Charizard players, or those considering the deck, I’ve decided to put together a matchup guide for today’s article. Unlike Regidrago VSTAR, which has to be a highly adaptable deck due to the variance in its random draws, Charizard has access to stable search options. Heading into rotation, expect this to be different with cards like Lumineon and Rotom leaving. Also, expect this card to suffer a massive K.O from this new Zoroark regardless of how hard it hits. That Reshiram makes this deck the stuff of Nightmares.

The second Budew hits the west, Zard will struggle staying consistent. It's goofy it ends up taking 20 damage, but you lock it out of using every viable Item ACE SPEC for it. At this point, they must use Max Belt or Hero's Cape to keep the pressure, or use Grand Tree for a better instantaneous setup without needing Pidgeot prior.

In addition, Hydreigon ex is pulling up like the angry goku meme after rotation and will threaten everything on Zard ex's bench that is not a Tera ex. Its days are seemingly numbered, along with losing Radiant Zard, all its V's and Forest Seal, and Collapsed Stadium.
