Too Old For Pokemon?

dude no worries,
pokemons cool!
and who's to say what's cool or not?only yourself.
so yea dude you're straight

I, at one time, thought I was too old to play pokemon tcg. That was back in 2000 after the first generation of cards had just ended and the second was starting. I was 12 back then, but I've been back into the tcg for about a month now and am 21. My friends and I all got back into it about the same time and even signed up for the pokemon league here. And to our surprise, there were a few older people there. But when I lost to an 8 year old kid in like 30 seconds, it sure damaged my ego lol. Thats when I learned the whole new format of few energies, few pokemon and lots of trainers. Sure different from how it was back in gen1.

It's strange. As a high school senior, playing Pokemon isn't really looked down upon. Sometimes when I'm playing the TCG with my friend during AP Stats, a bunch of other students will just gather around and see how it plays out. And these are like the 17-18 year olds of the school.

Sometimes the teachers look at us funny, though >_<

there are plenty of 40-year-old women at POP tournament these days, I will always remember that because one traumatized me by calling roserade GL and most other cards ever "sexy"

Um I'm 18 man and I'm a in-the-closet pokemon fan :p
I've been collecting since base set and havent missed a single set!
Thing is I don't and prob. wont ever look or sound like a pokemon fan.
3 of my friends only know about this BUT I'm always terrified of people knowing cause I have this pretty high social status, basically if the wrong person learned I'd be just another nerd... LOL
depends on you are dude and where you are in life.

Yeah in some areas and ages pokemon is looked at differently. At my age around here pokemon is just made fun of severely by anyone in 6th grade or above. :( I'm in 8th, and only few people know. If the wrong person found out, I'd be the laughing stock of the school for doing something I think is fun.

Same situation here. Except it's probably worse here because I'm not comfortable telling any of my friends I'm into it, lol. But, there's always redshark and skype battles. LOL. ;)

I don't think I ever went in that closet, I was always open about my Pokémon fan status. After all, what does a Pokémon look or sound like? I'm 20, I enjoy great "social status" (if you mean "do you have a good amount of friends or not?") at university as I did at school and that's perhaps simply because I like going to places and meeting people, and I suppose I get a great deal of confidence from acting (or does my confidence allow me to act??). I'm more than happy for people to see my card binders with all the complete classic sets and the DPt sets up to Platinum, I play the games - publicly sometimes - and I also like to show people my website. For most, they find it a novelty, and in a lot of cases nostalgia gets them looking. They're sometimes impressed when I tell them how much I make from site ads and show off my 50 million+ hits statistic. Sometimes they're even impressed by the content. Regardless, they just accept that it's something I like and by not being afraid of it I don't set myself up to be ridiculed :)

My girlfriend bought me a Pokémon annual for my birthday last week as a bit of humour, she certainly doesn't care. Anyone who WOULD make a big deal out of something as innocuous as liking a franchise isn't worth being friendly with. I admit that playground politics are, sadly, ruthless though.

Play the TCG, play the games, watch the animé, run a website - do whatever the heck you want :) It's as irrelevant to maintaining friendships as is supporting a particular sports club or watching Lost.

You are never too old. Sure, the demographic is aimed towards a younger audience. The game is still complex and is just as difficult as any other card game. :D

I'm 18 and play with my friends during lunch at school all of the time. Whenever we go somewhere outside of school we always bring our decks. Don't care what others think. It is all about enjoying yourself. Not about fitting in or caring too much about others think.

Cliche information is cliche. xD

Personally, I think there's a limit. When's the time? When you have kids. :p

I don't think you can ever be too old for Pokemon, but it can't be the head of your life. It can't be the lead on the pencil, nor the captain of the ship. I think Pokemon is great. It's a lot of fun: the cards are great, the new Pokemon are great, the atmosphere is great. The problem is, some people take it to a whole other extreme. Buying x amount of boxes from each set drains the cash out of your wallet. (That's why trade is FTW.) Don't get me wrong, opening packs and stuff is AWESOME. That feeling is great. But, if I were to get a box, that feeling would be lost, because I've got 36 packs. I'm speaking in the terms of money, because spending too much money on Pokemon can lead to a thumbs-down, if you guys know what I mean.

Unless you're a collector, (like I am), you can't go crazy with pack-buying. (That is, if you're going to complete the set.) If there's one card you need, buy singles, because you'll save lots of money in the long run. Testing luck on packs ends up giving you lame Bronzongs and Pichus. Then you get frustrated.

That's just one opinion.

I'm glad that I'm not the only 20+ person who feels that they're not too old for pokemon. I enjoy going to leagues, tournies and prereleases but I consider myself to be a non-hardcore player. It gives me something to do when I'm doing nothing. I mostly a collector looking for classic cards. To tell you the truth, I was going to fully quit because of others taunting me but I don't let it bother me anymore.

I'm on 8th grade and definatly not too old for pokemon! I will be a die hard fan for years!

It is a shame that being a fan of any Pokemon medium is looked down upon by some. It's like picking on someone for being a fan of sci fi films, a la Star Wars. Who are they to decide what is 'cool'? I got into collecting around base set, when it was the "it" thing to do. Fell out of it after I lost all my cards, then slowly got back into collecting around EX (this happened during high school). About a year and a half ago I decided to join the TCG competitively and have made many new friends and have had a lot of fun. Some friends have told me to "grow up", but others have been very supportive and will listen to when I talk about events even though they have no idea what I am talking about haha.

To repeat what has been said countless time before: true friends won't think of you any differently for having a hobby, you are never too old to have fun and Pokemon is a fun way to meet ppl and pass the time, but should never dominate your life in a World of Warcraft fashion (unless, of course, you work for the company).

P.S. I am about to turn 22 and joined the TCG when I was 20, nothing to be ashamed of :D

*L*....Ok....I have to say that there is no such thing as too old for Pokemon. I am 34, and mother of 6....My oldest son got me into collecting and playing when he was around 6 (He is 16 now) He wanted these things called Pokemon cards for christmas, so naturally, I got them for him, then he got me hooked on collecting them, then we joined the local league. When the league shut down, right around expedition, I stopped collecting, and he moved on to the video games. Then, two years ago, he and my second oldest came to me and said, "Mom, there is this Pokemon tournament...." Turns out that when he started high school, he made some friends that met at lunch everyday to play the card game, and he got back into it. My husband and I took them....it was a States, and we sat around for like 10 hours watching everyone play. We found out where the next Tourny was and made plans to take the boys. The next day when he came home from work, he had two prefab decks and a few card packs and said "Next time, we are going to play, instead of sitting around bored."

Like I said, that was almost 2 years ago. Today, my husband and I are both Professors, we run our own league, and I judge whenever I get the chance. All of our boys are into the game, and we are pretty much one big pokemon family! Not to mention, I have a very nice card collection...lol. Whenever anyone asks about my hobby, I tell them. I also tell them that it has improved my children's math, reading, and social skills. We even have some college professors who play at our league. No one is ever too old or too high on the social ladder, to play this game. You really should find a local league or tourny to attend....at least once. You will be pleasantly surprised as to how diverse and generally just nice, the pokemon community is! (....and you thought you wrote an essay....?!)

*L*....Kind of.....and actually all 8 of us collect....*L*...Though my collection is the largest.... ;P

I woulden't think anyone would be to old for the game. I was in it back in 99, when I was 12 years old. Now Im 22, and they still intrest me. I dont play them, but I love the hobby of collecting them. I still buy cards here, and there. Not much though. Im always spending money on my car.

People "tend" to think if your playing pokemon at a old age your some kind of nerdy guy. Which is false, but then again none of my friends know I collect them. Not ashamed, but Im not going to bust out with "hey I collect pokemon cards" because I know they dont.

Im 22 I go to clubs, house parties, I get PLENTY of women, own a nissan 350z, but I still collect cards here, and there.

P.S

If you saw me you would NEVER think I be into pokemon cards.

Thats my baby by the way :D

i'm Canadian too. so what i'm 21 years old, I collect and play pokemon openly and have a rather large group of friends that are into it (o_O). seriously man your never to old or to young to be into something. and even my friends that don't play pokemon they know i'm into it but they don't care cause they know it's just one of those things I like it's not like I flaunt it to no end or something. if you pride yourself on pokemon great welcome to the forum's with every other pokemon nerd, lol. point is take some pride man, look the 8th grader's gonna be a die-hard for years to come. plus if it make's you feel any better there's this guy I always usually see at my small tourny's who take's his wife and sometimes his grandchildren and usually play's his water or ground deck, guy's not to bad but no city's player, but the dude's 71 and a fun opponent and he keep's telling me every time he'll be back lol. so really man who care's and if they do what can they do about it, it's your choice. cya
