I must say that totally in the beginning of the game where you see your character in pajama's he/she is not wearing a hat, so it must be possible not to wear a hat. Cause the programming code does not give you a hat in pajama's, but we will see. I can live with hats if they are friggin awesome. i would love things like a black weddingveil xD that would be really awesome, or a crown or something.

I agree with the comment above, hat removal may be a post-game thing, I guess pokemon trainers & hats are on the same level as pokemon trainers & pokemon with GameFreak= inseparable. If it's not post-game then I assume that you just can't do it. [dividing by zero... removing your hat= ERROR!WTHAREYOUTRYINGTODO?!!]
In this video, the guy has been playing for quite a bit (explored most of the map) and he says he has not found an option yet that makes you remove the hat... This video he made is totally about the customization. Nintento and gamefreak you dissappoint me in this... it just does not make sense. But the guy of the video says he has not explored everything, I really hope that maybe nintendo will come out with a Wig-feature or something, or just a little clip in your hair, just so do not have to wear a hat.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izteb6rVp7k

SO I really hope this is real and that you CAN remove your hat, I do have a speculation that this might be inside a salon where you change your hair style and maybe you see it without the hat, but then automatically after changing you hairstyle/color you get your hat back on, but that is just my speculation! This certainly gives me/us a lot of hope I think
