XY Underwater Battles! And perhaps even more?

Looking at the new new video on the frontpage it seems to me that underwater battles have returned!

How do you imagine the Underwater Battles in generation 6? Will they have special requirements like the Sky Battles? Since the pure Fairy-type Pokémon Flabébé can participate, it's clear that it won't be just for Water-type Pokémon. Do you think Fire/Rock/Ground-type Pokémon will be able to participate as well?

What else do you think we can stumble upon if we get to explore underwater routes/passages? What mysteries do they have in store for us?

I am hoping for that; I loved the dive feature in generation 3. In the later generations it wasn't that good anymore in my opinion. I hope they will make full use of it in generation 6 with plenty of underwater activities and encounters!

I'm slightly disappointed it's not restricted to Water-type Pokémon and other Pokémon that can learn dive (unless Flabébé learns dive or has a special ability).

I hope they include another feature to give Water-type Pokémon the advantage underwater. Here's a list of some of my ideas:
  • They could have Swift Swim activated from the start
  • They could have their evasiveness/speed boosted
  • Other types can be slower
  • Other types can take a bit of damage each turn (Pokémon that are weak to water can take more damage)

I have been waiting for dive to be used like Gen III and this is really bringing my hopes up for that we will. I don't expect too much because the Kalos region doesn't have as much water as Hoenn but it's still exciting nonetheless.

It's probably a dive battle. If there were new underwater battles just for Water types a Fairy type wouldn't be in it, but Flabebe doesn't look like a Pokemon that could use dive. It could even be a new move animation. Like Water Pulse.

But Clauncher is using crabhammer, which is shown being used on land too.

I'm almost certain the trainer has one pokemon using dive, and sent Flabebe out to battle the Clauncher.

You can do that.

I'm pretty positive that this is an underwater battle. The first image is probably a frame or two before the actual attack takes place. The water above is also reflecting upon the sandy surface and the underwater features in the background fit perfectly within this environment, so it is quite safe to say that diving is finally back in gen 6.

I would love to see Water-types having a potential advantage in this environment (possibly +attack & +speed).

Gen III always had a soft spot in my heart, so this brings so much nostalgic joy to my inner child :D. As to advantages, I don't think they're will be any. Just a generic dive battle. Hopefully dive expands the exploration of the Kalos region just a bit :D

I think all types will be able to battle in the underwater battle spot, but some types (rock/fire/etc) will have a disadvantage. Maybe like attack weaknesses or something like that...

That's why i said It's probably dive. Not a whole new underwater battle system.

I also believe it is Dive, but I was thinking they could have added new features or requirements to it!

Funny how when I mentioned the possibility of Dive before, people kept responding with "They won't because you can only dive in far away deep dark water spots". Now I actually feel like saying "I told you so" after people kept telling me I was wrong and there'd be no underwater stuff.

Anyway, I hope to see some moves be stronger and some be blocked for Sky and Water battles. I find it hard to picture a pokemon using ground-type moves in the air or a pokemon using Flying-type moves underwater. I can see them using Fire-type moves, though. I mean, underwater volcanoes.
Also, Dive should become a different move when underwater, but with the same effects. It just has a different name and animation. And Dive in Sky Battles could become a flying-type move, or be replaced with "Swoop" or something.

I completely agree with you on the idea that under water battles should be exclusive to water type Pokémon and will be very disappointed if this is not the case. Even though I do understand that you could use all your Pokémon in dive battles in R/S/E, it still kind of bothered me. How can a fire, rock, or ground type battle under water?

Maybe Pokémon that aren't water types receive damage every turn like sandstorm when underwater?

EDIT: Ninja'd xD

"Swoop"?

I don't know about that, but maybe they'll remix the fly move when we are in the sky battle.

But it is possible to dive deeper, even when you are already underwater

In the pokemon smash trailer on the beach right above on the beach there is dark water like in ruby, saphire and emerald. And all water pokemon can swim why must the learn surf?

Surf=/=swimming
Surf=being able to transport a trainer on water for extended periods of time.

The main reason the mechanic exists is so people can't go to certain places too early in-game. Just like Cut. A small tree could in reality easy be destroyed with any other move.

I would say that they should make it only for certain Pokemon (the ones that can easily swim under water [not necessarily a water type though]). Or they should give double speed. I don't think that they'll stop ground, rock and fire from being under water mostly because rock and sand can be found on the sea (fire could be volcanos as stated by flood badge) and that rain didn't harm them before.

how about dive battles to go along with sky battles?
"Only fully aquatic pokemon can apply"-kind of thing
