Value of Pokemon Cards

This Italian chick in my 2nd block thinks that old Pokemon cards will go up in value over the next couple of decades. I keep telling her that she is 100% wrong, but she doesn't believe me. Opinions?

um..the only things that might are 1st ed base, error jungle (jungle holos without the jungle symbol), and shadowless base. all others nope.

Decades is a long time.
We have all heard stories about comics or baseball cards that had they been kept would have been worth a fortune.

Once kids in the Pokemon craze days become adults they will want to capture the toys of their youth.
THEN maybe the cards will go up in value dependent on the supply.

Shakespeare is correct. I have a big box of old cards and a bunch of 1st editions and it is probly only worth around $100 maybe.

Ok first of all, just go along with the italian chick, because whenever a girl says something, theyre always "right" at least in their mind. Also, they may well go up, but I doubt it since there is a new age of pokemon coming out, and all the grown-up kids may just want the newest thing, not the old weak pokemon. There have always been more serious players than serious collectors.

It depends on how Pokemon fairs 10-20 years from now. Baseball is still huge, all over the world. Due to this, special baseball cards can be worth millions. I'd say the girl is most likely wrong. As much as I love pokemon, I don't think it's going to stay strong over the next few decades. If it does, however, classic cards will be worth tons more than they are today.

I have my complete master set of the original base set still. Its in a binder in my closet out of the way of being handled. It will surely be worth something later on.

Its just like the muscle cars, they were, at the time worth very little. They were just another car. But now, they are no longer in production and everyone wants them still. They are worth a LOT.

People always say the first movie in a series is the best because it was the first. Same rule may apply to Pokemon cards.

When the cards become old and out of date, they become harder to find and can easily be worth more.

Even if they dont become worth lots of money, some cards such as Pikachu, Lugia and Charizard will though because they were just popular pokemon characters.

I mean, Charizard ex is still worth $150+ dollars. (Mint)

I personally think the valuable cards will go up in value, while the less valuable ones will tend to drop (oh look, I have a Base Set Rattata! Woohoo!). I think Pokémon cards aren't really analogous to baseball cards because the only point of baseball cards is to collect, whereas Pokémon cards have a playability factor also. The fact that there are so many and that there is no "best" (ie, there's no Willie Mays or Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantel of Pokémon) makes me think that Pokémon cards won't be worth fortunes, but maybe a bit more than they are now.

Could be. Or it might be worth about two dollars.
It might go up in value, but it'd still be pretty cheap.
10 years ago I could have bought that card for 10 cents. I wish my portfolio could have shown that return.

@omahanime

just because someone says a card is worth a certain amount or puts an ebay auction at a certain amount doesnt Really mean it's worth that.

And if a card is up on ebay for $2, the seller realistically only makes $.05.

If you ship through them, which includes postage and tracking, it'll cost you $1.41. Ebay fees are 9%. Paypal fees are 2.9% + $0.30.

If shipping and fees weren't so ridiculous, the card's true price would show.

Still, the point is it's not really a valuable card even to a collector of Rattatas. They're not going to be able to sell it for more, and they won't buy it for any more if they're not dumb.
I just don't think it's going to get any more valuable than it is right now (maybe cost more in a certain currency, but that would be due to inflation).

Did someone say Rattata?
I have 4!

1st edition, Shadowless, and 4th printings are rarer than the "unlimited"(3rd printing) most of us have.
Those stand the best chance to go up in value.
