Card of the Day: Virizion from Noble Victories

13-virizion.jpg

NOTE: Please use today's thread to review Virizion (NV97) as well, since both cards are exactly the same except for their artwork.

Guiding Questions:
1. How does this card stand on its own (analyze the HP, attacks, Abilities, etc. of the card)?
2. What role does/could this card have in the metagame?
3. What cards, if any, does this card combo with?
4. Give it a rating (out of 10), and explain why you have given it that rating.

You are not required to follow the guiding questions, but make sure your post has informative and interesting content.

1. How does this card stand on its own (analyze the HP, attacks, Abilities, etc. of the card)?:
110 HP for a Basic Pokémon is pretty great, especially with the release of Eviolite, however; that is the only strong stat this card has typing wise. Resistance to water is kinda nifty, but fire weakness is really going to hurt the overall playable of this card because of how popular Reshiram is right now. Grass isn't a very good type to be in this format, in fact, I can't think of anything in the metagame that is weak to Grass. One retreat cost could be worse, despite the fact I would be excepting a free retreat cost due to Virizion's base 108 speed in the Video Games. Double Draw is a decent attack, the two card draw is a nice way to refresh a hand without getting rid of potentially good cards you already have in hand. Leaf Wallop is a decent attack, 80 for 2 isn't too bad, even if you have to use Leaf Wallop twice for it to reach maximum power.

2. What role does/could this card have in the metagame?
: I think Virizion is mostly going to be used as a draw tech in a lot of decks that might need a back up attacker. I personally wouldn't choose a Virizion tech over other cards such as Cleffa or Manaphy in most decks, considering Virizion is going to need Rainbow Energy or the rarely played Grass Energy to reach full attacking potential. I don't even think that Virizion is that good as a back up attack, it isn't able to score an OHKO on Reshiram, Zekrom, Donphan, Durant (assuming the have Special Metals or Eviolite, which they will), Cobalion, Gothitelle, or anything else in the Metagame for that matter. It is also worth mentioning that you need 3 turns before you can start hitting for your 80 damage.

Even as a source of draw, Virizion has a lot of slops. It needs an energy to get your 2 card draw, and has a one retreat cost. This isn't very good, if you are low on energy in a game, Virizion isn't going to be doing you much good, because you will not be able to use it as draw, or get it out of your active in some cases.

3. What cards, if any, does this card combo with?: I really couldn't tell you what Virizion is suppose to be played with. I guess it is a stand alone tech, with a lot of slops.

  • Decks that need consistent draw, that may not want to turn certain cards from their hand back into their deck.
  • Decks with Rainbow Energy
4. Give it a rating (out of 10), and explain why you have given it that rating.: I'm not that impressed with Virizion as a card, it is suppose to be a bulky source of draw that can pack a mean punch, but it is one shotted by Zekrom with a Pluspower, and Reshiram with 5 counters, even with Eviolite. It's attack is less than impressive because it one shots very little in the metagame, and takes three turns to pick up full momentum. Honestly, there are much better cards out there. 4/10

Keeping it short today, hoping this thread sees some more posts, I would like to hear some playable aspects of Virizion.

:/ Uncontested, come on guys.

Well, I guess you automatically get the Grain of Sand then. Lol.

Come on, other people. Post some reviews!

FINE. I'll step up.

1. How does this card stand on its own (analyze the HP, attacks, Abilities, etc. of the card)?

The card is very self sufficient as it can rely on itself for both draw and attack. It's first attack is basically a renamed collect, allowing you to draw two cards, while it's second attack does 40 for two, then 80 for two with each consecutive attack. Unfortunately this chain ends after you double draw once, breaking the leaf wallop chain. The HP is...meh. With Eviolite, it's enough to survive a Bolt Strike, which is more than Druddigon can offer. However, the fire weakness is absolutely atrocious, and makes the card very soft to any attacker in Tyram.

2. What role does/could this card have in the metagame?

Double Draw could be used as a starter. This attack runs on colorless, so its splashable in any deck that needs it. It's also a lot harder to donk than Cleffa or Manaphy, but it's attack is far inferior to either hand refresh, especially given the number of draw cards in our format. Leaf Wallop is not that impressive, and few decks run grass energy, so it will rarely see play.

3. What cards, if any, does this card combo with?

Metapod can remove the fire weakness while being set up quickly enough to still warrant having a starter active.

4. Give it a rating (out of 10), and explain why you have given it that rating.

All in all...this card isn't very good. Yes, it's true that this card has a lot of HP. Yes it has an impressive FA foil version, but our meta hasn't used a "Collect" starter for a very long time if ever. The card isn't bad per se, and is playable, but this format has better options. In the event that the next format is BW on and nothing better comes out, this card couple indeed be a good starter, but such a rotation is almost a year away, meaning that it is almost certain that something better will be out by then. It does have survivability though, which can count for something I guess.

Overall Rating: 5/10.
