Discussion What do we think the format is going to be after rotation?

Note: This is assuming the next rotation rotates the rest of the XY era from Standard and all of B&W from Expanded.
This isn’t just deck predictions, this is just overall generalizations about the upcoming version of Standard. I know it’s way too early to be thinking about this, but hey, we have to be ready.
I think that the format is going to really slow down. Think of what we lose for a second:
Sycamore, N, Fisherman, Wally, Skyla, Giovanni’s Scheme, and all those lovely draw supporters.
Max Elixir, Bursting Balloons, Float Stone, Fighting Fury Belt, Splash and Burning Energy, etc...
Decks involving Talonflame, Greninja BREAK, Volcanion, Pokémon like Octillery, etc...
And that’s off the top of my head.

I predict Gardevoir GX along with all Stage 2 decks will just blow up. You can’t Skyla, you can’t Wally, you can’t Talonflame Aero Blitz for a Gardevoir and a Rare Candy. You have to rely on Cynthia, Sophocles, Lillie, and maybe even Hau to get what you want. You can’t get any stage 2 deck out at all if your main draw supporter is a shuffle-draw like Cynthia.

Garbodor is probably going to reign supreme due to the slower format meaning people will play massive piles of Garbodor food to get set up in the slightest definition of speedily.

And come to think of it, 56 Dark Energy Guzzlord might be meta. It gets set up insanely fast in the slow format I’m expecting, and it has the numbers.

Basic heavy decks like Tapu Koko GX I expect to reign supreme due to the lack of speed it takes to set up an evolution deck as fast as a Basic deck.

We lose Sycamore and Natural Harmonia Gropius, so maybe our most consistent draw support will be Lillie. Maybe we’ll see Sophocles. We’ll definitely see Cynthia, but decks without Sycamore won’t be the same. Maybe, Goomy forbid, we’ll end up actually using Hau. I know that Lusamine will definitely see play. They say in this day and age, don’t waste your supporter. But in the format we approach without many supporters, Lusamine and Gladion will find a perfect spot in decks.

What else do we predict for the oncoming Standard?

I doubt that TPCI is just going to mass rotate. There is like what, 12 BW sets, which is imo, to much to rotate at once. I’m going to assume that we just lose break point and break through, GEN and most likely FTC. I think we keep STS and EVO (so Sycamore stays around)

you forgot bridgette!
also, 4 lele will become staple to get your Hau, so unless we get some new cards for draw, it will be slow (note we have Zouark to replace Octillery)

Standard will definitely be SUM on. That will rotate 5 full sets and make for the smaller rotation of 3 sets last year. I expect Expanded to stay the same yet
again.
I believe it’s goal is to be like Magic’s Modern format.

format is 100% SUM-on

By the time you should even think about making this thread we will not only have SM5 (prism stars) but SM6 in May and SM7 which should be legal at Worlds. This kind of thread should be outlawed until at least July.

You know how Pokemon brought back N for no reason in Fates Collide? Don't be surprised if we get Sycamore back. We might actually see a Colress reprint, since he was in the games. A lot can still happen. But if we were thrown into SUM-on, Drampa GX, Slyveon GX, Zoroark GX, qnd any other draw power Pokemon would be HUUUUUGE. Pokemon isn't rotating expanded anytime soon. If they do rotate it at any point, it'll probably be to Boundaries Crossed-on, or maybe even Next Destinies-on. They'll likely to rotate it to one of the past standard formats we've had.

I suppose that makes me an outlaw. And by the way, if that's your view, shouldn't you be outside protesting the Christmas decorations?

I did forget Bridgette.
4 LELE? I give up.

And I haven't acknowledged reprints, so we might get a random VS Seeker reprint, or maybe we'll have Nanu be the new Sycamore, just like Sycamore was the new Juniper.

Okay, maybe it won't be as slow as I was expecting.

It is waaaaaaaaay too early to think about next rotation. At least 3 more sets will be launched when the next rotation happens and we have no idea what those sets will contain.

Pff, we know. But as Scar from Lion King says, we have to be prepared.

What is there to be prepared for? It's not like it takes months to build a single deck, it takes a couple minutes.

And it's hard to prepare for anything when we don't know what the contents of the 3 whole sets coming out before rotation are going to be.
