Ruling What does "as a tech" mean?

I've been looking through a number of the threads in the Deck Garage and often come across people saying "play 2 Empoleon & 1 Empoleon LV X (as a tech)" or something along those lines with "as a tech" included in them.

What does this mean? Does it stand for a particular technique possibly?

Thanks again for helping to inform a new player. :)

A tech could be a few different things.

1: Like, if you play an Exeggutor deck, you could play a delta one as a tech. Its like a backup. Same with Empoleon lv.x.
2: It could be something to help you out. Blaziken (PK) is a tech, because it can give energy.

Pm a stratagist or C-M or Charizard or anyone really experienced for a better explanation. I'm not good at giving instructions :D

Close. Any time a pokemon player references a "tech," they mean a single card within a deck meant to help deal with specific situations that might occur once every few games, or situations that might occur once per game. That is, the card is less universally useful than most of the deck, but can be vital if one particular situation comes up. For example, a grass deck may wish to run a "tech" water pokemon, in order to balance itself should it have to face a water-weak fire deck.

The most common "tech" cards are trainers. In this format, a "tech" buffer piece might very well save your pokemon the turn before it gets knocked out, but you wouldn't want to play a buffer piece at just any point in the game. You would want to play draw cards as often as possible, so they're not tech. Same with the primary energy you'll use to power your pokemon, or the main line of your pokemon.

Hope that's helpful,

Very helpful, Dendro. I can definitely see the value of having a few "just in case" cards around, just didn't know that they were called tech's.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. :)

Tech doesn't necessarily mean it must be different to the main strategy though. You can have a deck that is only techs and works by using the right techs. Common techs are Holon FF for when you encounter resistance and pokémon with copying attacks or bodies to exploit weakness.
