Discussion What Happened to Skyla?

Hey guys, I started playing pokémon a year ago, and what I've noticed over the year in the decline of Skyla. Am I the only one noticing this? Is there a reason for this?

Korrina and Teammates do the same thing, only (arguably) better, especially with VS Seeker? Also, Seismitoad is a thing.

I think we just have better Supporters in format now. I remember when the HGSS sets rotated, and we lost the good draw support like PONT, Copycat, Magnezone. I think I remember that awkward month or so after the BW-On rotation, but before Boundaries Crossed where Bianca and Cheren saw play because Juniper and N were the only other draw support in format. Skyla feels much too slow in most decks nowadays now that we have VS Seeker (because let's be honest, how many times did we Skyla for another Supporter?)

I think one of the other things is that it is 'old'. In my area, there is only ~three people (including myself) actually play N, while Skyla is seldom seen, simply because most people in the area weren't around until XY-on.

So, should I stop running 2-4 skylas in all of my decks. I currently have a gengar deck, a m-gardevoir deck, a defensive yveltal deck, and a garbotoad deck. I kind of like skylas in my yveltal deck because I run computer search and jirachi, so that means an ultra ball can literally get me any card in my deck. I kind of like that, but what do you guys think?

It depends on the deck, but I don't think it's a terrible idea to have one Skyla. Like you said, you could Ultra Ball for any card in your deck (though I would hesitate to do so unless it was for game), and once you have it in your discard, it's there for you to potentially use with VS Seeker whenever it's convenient for you. But then the problem becomes that it is only one card in your deck and can be difficult to find.

Its generally too slow for this format. While Pokemon is trying (In my opinion) to slow down the game, the card just isn't helpful enough in decks today to devote a spot to it. Nowadays, everything over-OHKOes other pokemon. I don't feel as if there are times now where people say 'I just needed the laser to win' whereas it is 'I just needed the X energy to win.'
On the contrary, like Mora said, it wouldn't be terrible to have a copy of 1/2 in some decks. For example, I like to play 1 of it in my kyogre deck because it helps get out spirit links, profs letter, and rough seas. Some decks, such as VG, Eggs, and some Yveltal decks, still run 1 or 2 copies of Skyla. With VS seeker I'd probably want to use a colress or something better, but if a game winning move is minimized (ie needing the laser to win) completely with Skyla then it might have a place in some decks.

In my Empoleon/Greninja deck, I ran I think 3 Skyla and 3 Teammates. Searching out Items can be essential in a Stage 2 deck, especially when also running Professor's letter and Energy Retrieval.

I think Skyla is not played because rare candy and stage 2's arent played so much these days. It's an okay one or two of though, I run one in my Yveltal deck, Yveltal seems to benefit from them, especially if you run lasers. Any deck that runs Comp Search could also benefit from it as well.

Considering that Computer Search is in most decks, I'm not quite sure I can agree with you. /However/ decks that run Ultra Ball, Professor's Letter, Computer Search and VS Seeker would benefit much more, since you've literally got every card in your deck covered via Skyla.

It's still played in decks that need to get their items quickly.

For most decks though it's better to play a draw supporter to refresh the cards in your hand. Seismitoad also makes Skyla lose some of its usefulness. If you have to Skyla for a supporter you're probably falling behind. Better to just play a different supporter then.
