I have spent a lot of time studying different decks from the Japanese metagame and I really would like to get your guys's opinion on what the best choice of deck will be. With the release of the new tins pretty much the 3 most used exs (maybe not rayquaza so much) will be easy to obtain. Im leaning towards eels and friends but Darkrai/Hydreigon looks fun.
Discuss and vote.

What do you mean by Eels and friends? ZekEels? From how I've been testing, ZekEels just doesn't get there anymore. You can only 2HKO Darkrai (unless you have Terrakion), and most Darkrai builds now are running SSU/Max Potion. Also, Darkrai can get going on turn 1/2 for 90, whereas ZekEels usually fully sets up on turn 2/3.

basically either Rayeels Mewtwo eels Zekeels or anything that really abuses eels

And is that a speedier darkrai

I guess that the darkrai hydreigon should also include stuff like darkrai tornadus and other darkrai variants

FINALLY someone has some sense. Eels + Friends, not Eels + Rayquaza. Just Rayquaza as an attacker doesn't really work.

Anyway, Darkrai/Hydreigon and Garchomp/Altaria are going to be the top decks, with Zekeels + Friends/Rayquaza following close behind. Mewtwo + Terrakion is quite good from what I've heard, so that's probably going to be Tier 1 also. I wouldn't be surprised if Empoleon gets a boost because of the slower format.

It's been doing very well in the Japanese version of Nats. I see no reason for people to think about dropping it just yet.

i think that garchomp/altaria is the play, hits for a ton of damage and very consistent b/c of gabite. might not be the bdif but its consistent and fast and i'll for sure be playing that pile

The results from the poll is what I have been thinking mostly but I cant wait till the new format(praying for bw-on because I like the slower format). The best part is that it will be easy to build almost any deck with the legendary tins coming out I have already preordered 3 of each for about $120 plus shipping I just want it to be september already. But um anyway do you guys think that darkrai tornadus wont be as good anymore because it seems that it is played much in japan with all of the new decks coming out.

Why does it have to be a Japanese deck?

Japan is already playing in a BW-on format, whereas the rest of the word (I believe?) is still HGSS-on. Looking at the kind of decks/techs/combos that Japanese players are using is a good way to get a heads'-up, so to speak, on how our next format will play out, especially since they also already have a bunch of cards that we won't be getting until our fall set.

Moved to Competitive Collective. It involves competitive formats in the near future.

Forgive me: how does Garchomp/Altaria work and how does Darkrai/Hydreigon work?

Garchomp/Altaria: Spam Gabites early on and use Dragon Call to fill your bench with Altarias (which let Garchomp do an extra 20 damage each) and Garchomps. Then use Garchomp to do a lot of damage with very little energy.

Darkrai/Hydreigon: Hydreigon is basically Klinklang for Dark energies. Get energies on the field fast, set up Hydreigon, and sweep with Darkrai while Max Potioning away any damage by moving the energies off and then moving them back on. Use other attackers like Sigilyph and Shaymin EX when necessary. Use Hydreigon himself as a Terrakion counter, or Sigilpyh against Terrakion EX.

Garchomp Altaria. It can KO the Hydreigons than 2HKO the Darkrais. It is just more consistent and can take easier prizes.

Garchomp/Altaria should be a favorite to win in that particular matchup, since with one Altaria out it can OHKO Hydreigon or with the second attack. It's also more consistent because of Gabite's search ability.

then how did hydreigon win in japan

I think they will both be Tier One. In Japan, Hydreigon won, but based on theorymon Garchomp should win the matchup, due to Garchomp hitting for weakness on Hydreigon, then just being able to 2HKO Darkrais with one energy and one Altaria, for 2 prizes.

im interested how ho-oh does well because it seems so weak

also just won a match with hydreigon against a bw on zekeels and it was fairly close becuz he catchered and killed my deino stopping the quick hydreigon but after that I got set up fairly quickly

Garchomp has a favorable matchup against Hydreigon, but only slightly. If Garchomp misses a beat, Darkrai can easily beat it. However, that normally doesn't happen, and Garchomp is taking two prizes every two turns while Darkrai is taking one prize every two turns until it gets some onto the bench via Night Spear. Hydreigon vs. Garchomp games are always very close and usually come down to one prize.

That info is based on testing I've done myself.
