What Legendaries Do You Want to See in Sun & Moon?

As the thread already says, what kind of Legendaries do you want to see in Sun and Moon, being Gen 7 and all? Like what type combos do you hope on, their possible designs, will there be a Trio this time ahead, unlike in X and Y, etc, etc.

For me, starting off with the Main Legendary Mascots that are to represent Sun and Moon, I expect them to actually represent those two cosmic objects through two of the following four probable type combos making the most sense:
  • Fire/Electric (new type combo!)
  • Water/Fairy
  • Water/Psychic
  • Water/Steel
My reasonings:

The first type combo, Fire/Electric is a brand new type combo not yet shown. In essence, this type combo pretty much represents plasma, the fourth state of matter, and the stuff of which the Sun is made of. On top of this, the Sun possesses a natural electromagnetic field and radiates sunlight, a form of electromagnetic radiation. The legendary in question, as such, would likely be a fast, extremely offensive focused Pokémon. It would likely be the sweeper of sweepers within Ubers for sure.

For the Legendary of Moon, I have three possible typings. The first is Water/Fairy, which would mainly represent the mysticism of the moon, and its light it has on people and Pokémon. A example of this is the attack "Moonblast", which is a Fairy-type attack, thus would make a lot of sense. The Water-typing is there to represent the moon's effect on the Earth's tides through gravity. Seeing as Fairy is mostly defensive in nature, it would be a defensive focused Pokémon to stand up against its Sun-counterpart, which is offensive in nature.

The second typing for the Moon Legendary, would be Water/Psychic, mainly through the aspect of the moon, once more, controlling the tides through gravity, but this time with psychic effect. I say this, because the move "Gravity" is typed as Psychic within the games. Of course, that's just about it, but it would still keep its defensive nature.

The third typing I could see happening, is a Water/Steel type, of which only the Piplup line has in its final form of Empoleon. The reasoning for this, is simple really. The metal known as Silver, is known to represent the crescent moon, and being a shiny metal, would explain the property of how the moon is capable of reflecting the light of the sun back onto the Earth. In addition, the Legendary's possible Steel-typing grants it a amazing defense, once more embodying the Moon Legendary's defensive nature.

What is more interesting with the whole defense and offense aspects, is if Sun and Moon end up being the equivalent of Gold and Silver as commonly speculated, these new Legendaries could be seen as new versions of both Lugia (defense) and Ho-oh (offense), the Legendaries of Gold and Silver.

Adding to the greatness of these two possible awesome Legends, is that my speculated typings would allow them both to be balanced against one another, being capable of preying on each other's prime weaknesses, unlike the legends of XY, of which only Xerneas had the sole advantage:
  • Fire/Electric is capable of beating all three Water combo typings. No questions asked. This is mainly done through its Electric sub-type, using its STAB Electric attacks. Another possibility, would be using Grass type attacks like Solarbeam or Energy Ball, although they do not get STAB from this, like all Fire-Type mons do.
  • Any of the three Water typings; Water/Fairy, Water/Steel and Water/Psychic can beat Fire/Electric, through preying on the Sun Legendary's primary Fire type using its STAB Water-type attacks, as the Electric sub type is only resistant against Flying, Steel, and itself.
That is about it for me regarding the Legendaries, for now anyways. That said, even though this is pure speculation, I'm fairly certain that atleast one of these type combos will be used for the Mascot Legendaries, atleast any of the Water typings in the favor of Moon's Legendary mascot. I personally hope on the Fire/Electric type for Sun. It would be so fitting, but knowing GF, they'd troll the heck out of it and give it some other stupid type that has nothing to do with the sun, or even just make it a mono type.

Seeing as Fire/Electric is the prime choice for Sun for my taste, I'd couple it personally with Water/Steel for sheer badassery, emphasizing pure offense and pure defense in a harmonious balance.

What is everyone's else take on the Legendaries of Sun and Moon; mascot or otherwise?

Since this thread don't specify wether or not the legendaries should be new or not, I want Mega Ho-Oh and Mega Lugia. Or Primal Reversions or whatever fancy name GF would come up with. Since the ship's already sail for GS remakes, I sense this would be the perfect oportunity to do it, given the duo's relationships with Sun and Moon. Heck, if GF is really slowly reducing the amount of Pokémon introduced in each generation, they could even be the games mascots!

Its a good theory. It could work, although I'm more interested in actual new Legendaries and how they're incorporated, rather than revisiting old ones. Sure, mons like Mewtwo and Rayquaza got uber powerful Mega forms, with Groudon and Kyogre getting Primal Reversions, but its just not the same to me. In addition, there was this interesting theory on another forum that explained Zygarde's existence in a trio with the two new Legendaries of Sun and Moon, forming a trio of balance that represented the Sun, the Moon and the Earth itself.

Because of this theory I read, and due to the fact Zygarde has Aura Break for its ability, I speculate that the new Legendaries of Sun and Moon will have similar abilities as to share the Aura theme, such as Fire/Sun Aura and Water/Moon Aura.

I would predict that the Mascot Legendaries will be based off mythological deities, which is most probable if you are smart enough to look into the inspirations of previous Legendary Pokémon.

The Legendary Sun Pokémon might be a Fire/Fairy Type based off the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, while the Legendary Moon Pokémon would be a Dark/Ice Type based off the Moon God Tsukuyomi.

I've recently seen a video made by a YouTube user named Gaijin Goomba that delves into the myth of these two deities. Their story is an ill-fated relationship that escalated when Tsukuyomi killed someone that ended up costing him his relationship with Amaterasu, and both went their separate ways, thus, forming the Sun and Moon cycle we know today.

Fire/Fairy would work for Amaterasu, in my opinion, since the Fairy Type is usually reserved for feminine and benevolent-looking Pokémon. The Fire Type is also your obligatory connection to the Sun. Dark/Ice would work for Tsukuyomi because he was kind of a cold jerk, no pun intended. I think the Moon can be very cold, especially if you took the "dark side of the moon" saying into serious consideration.

That could work as well. Fire/Fairy was a consideration in my head, but my ideas were more technical based rather than on actual mythology, and I didn't do enough research on it. Should have realised that Legendaries are often based on existing mythology, as to make more sense of them. On top, a humanoid-like goddess Pokémon does sound interesting and is unique, and on that, you make a pretty good point with the Fire/Fairy. I'd dig this combo too, as its new.

However, I'd not go with the Dark/Ice suggestion, because it would be a one sided advantage for the supposed Fire/Fairy. If anything, I'd replace Ice with Water, so there's a counter-balance between the two, and because Water is more associated with the Moon than Ice is, especially with the common fact of the moon controlling the tides through gravity.

In addition, its always possible to have the supposed Water/Dark Pokémon Legendary learn Ice-type attacks as to cover the "dark side of the moon" aspect that you speak of. Perhaps its ability could power up both Water, Dark and Ice type attacks, while the Sun Pokémon could have a ability that powers up Fire, Fairy and Grass type attacks.

In the end, I don't really care what the typings will be, aside of expecting Fire and Water as their primary types of course. That, and whatever their types will be, there should be a counter-balance. GF kind of missed the whole point with Xerneas, who, instead of sole Fairy type, should have been Grass/Fairy type as to counter-balance with Yveltal's Dark/Flying type.

I believe the two versions will involve Volcanion (sun) and this new pokemon Magearna (moon) since they'll both star in the next movie together.

Volcanion makes sense in the way that it represents both the sun and the moon via its typing, and even then, that's just speculation. That said, I highly doubt it would heavily feature Volcanion, a Mythical Pokémon. it would be a total bummer if so, because actual "New" Pokémon is what drives the series mostly. If Volcanion were to get a extended role, they should have done this in Gen 6, and wouldn't make Gen 7 too impressive or fun, because it stars a older Pokémon already known by fans. But who knows....perhaps this could be happening in the same vein that Zygarde is speculated to have some role in Sun and Moon.

I see the mascot legends being Dark/Fairy for Sun, and Fire/Electric for Moon. i think they will be switched like in B/W because of how the crystals are switched in the Japanese titles.

I am 99% sure the Sun (Moon) legend will be Dark type. The games symbol is literally a dark type symbol with a circle scooped out and placed somewhere else. Before Fairy type was a thing, I feel like the dark type represented the moon. A great example of this is Umbreon. They were night time pokemon who flourished in moonlight. Fairy is an obvious second choice because of the current connection between fairy types and the moon. Though it could be replaced with water type seeing as the moon is associated with water in myth, and how it controls the tides. And Ice could work, but I feel that's more of a stretch.

Fire/Electric works great for the Moon (Sun) legend seeing as those two types roughly represent plasma, and it would be a neat combo, though I suppose Fire/Grass could work too. I don't however see Fire/Fairy working. Fairy just has too much symbolism with the moon.

Hmm, I'd like a Dragon/Fighting Legendary. That would be an awesome dual-type. It could be something Gargoyle-like.

You know, something like this:
51yptZO6F6L._AC_UL115_.jpg

I also would like some more Norse Mythology inspired Legendaries:
- Squirrel (Ratatoskr). Could be Normal or Normal/Fairy. In other word, the new Mew/Celebi/Jirachi etc.
- Wolf (Fenrir). Could be Normal/Dark.

I agree, but Fenrir would like become Ice/Dark, as Fenrir, atleast in most art I have seen, associates him with winter and ice.

We need a Poison type legendary that isn't Arceus, it's the only type that doesn't have one. Even more so now that Fairy exists, we need some better Poison types to help balance things out.

As far as the mascots, it's practically a no-brainer that they'll have Fire and Dark as their primary types, as far as I'm concerned it's more a matter of what the secondary type is. I'll go Fire/Grass and Dark/Fairy, both of them are unused type combinations that could really stand out. I could also see Dark/Water for Moon's mascot, but that would be significantly less interesting.

Fire/Electric (new type combo!)

Actually it's not a new type combo, we already have that in the form of Heat Rotom.

Ah, right, slipped my mind. Then I will just consider it a new type combo that's not Rotom. As for the rest, I still stand by my chosen typings, but will add several new suggestions to it as done in this thread, as something like Fire/Grass can also work pretty good and its unique.

So as such, I have the following types covered:
  • Fire/Electric
  • Fire/Grass
  • Fire/Fairy
  • Water/Fairy
  • Water/Dark
  • Water/Steel
  • Water/Psychic
I put Fire and Water as the primary types as they represent the sun and moon way better in a technical aspect. Dark wouldn't be a good primary type as its about dirty fighting as many people have said before. It only has a small handful of actual "darkness" type attacks. But who knows that Gen 7 will introduce actual "darkness" type attacks that's about actual darkness/energy?

This is all assuming the legendary duo will even be representatives of the sun and the moon. They could very well just be symbols of something that is vaguely tied to the sun and moon in some loose way and in reality they are just something like Dragon/Psychic and Dragon/Dark. With that it mind:

I'd be more inclined to assume the Moon representative is Fairy before I would assume it's Water. With the moon references in the fairy typing (Moonblast, Clefairy line being supposedly from the moon), this makes the most sense to me. I'd even put Fairy/Dark as more likely than Fairy/Water thanks to Umbreon's relation to the moon.

For the Sun representative, it could really be anything, but I'm guessing either pure Fire or Fire/Psychic: Psychic because of Espeon's relation to the Sun, and Fire because the sun is made of fire and stuff. It might not even be Fire, though. I mean, it's not like anyone is really guessing the Moon representative will be a Rock type just because the moon is a big rock. It could very well be Psychic/Fairy, Fire/Dragon, pure Psychic, or basically anything besides Ice or Water.

For my WANTS, though, here's what I'd say:
  • Moon: Fairy/Dark
  • Sun: Fairy/Fire
Both unused, both cool.

Fire/Fairy I agree with. as with Fire/Psychic. With Fairy/Dark not so much, but either way, I will add it to the list just in case as its a unique typing. I just prefer the stuff that actually goes with the sun and moon. That said, you have a point that the Legendaries themselves might not have anything to do with the Sun and Moon, but it would make the titles themselves more random and weird:
  • Fire/Electric
  • Fire/Fairy
  • Fire/Grass
  • Fire/Psychic
  • Water/Fairy
  • Water/Dark
  • Water/Steel
  • Water/Psychic
  • Dark/Fairy

Disclaimer: These are all theories. They can be entirely wrong. Please feel free to rebut or add your comments. :)

With the titles Sun and Moon, I want to see the next games with overwhelming and thrilling mascots. With Hawaii as the speculated inspiration for the next region, I think the legendary Pokemon will be based on Hawaiian legends. The following are the legendary Pokemon that I want to see and think we will see in the next games:

1) I think (and I hope) that Missingno will finally play a huge role in the next games! Hawaii is not without its spooky legends. Among them are the Night Marchers and I think Missingno will be based on them. Game Freak might build a story about Missingno. With Red, Blue, and Yellow now playable in the 3DS and Pokemon from these games will be transferrable to S/M, it will be very interesting to see Missingno as the Night Marchers!!! Read the quote below and imagine the Night Marchers as Missingno:

"The Huaka’ipo are the spirits of ancient Hawaiian warriors who are eternally cursed to march throughout the islands of Hawaii. Known as the Night Marchers, they are said to march in a single line, often carrying torches and weapons, playing drums, and chanting. The Night Marchers rarely appear during the day, but when they do it means that they are escorting a living relative to the other side. The telling signs that Night Marchers are heading toward you are the sounds of drums getting closer, a foul odor, conch shells being blown, and approaching torchlight." -- McAllister, M., Listverse

Missingno will be a Ghost type! :)

2) A legendary Pokemon that is based on the Hawaiian legendary lovers: Pele and Kamapua'a
As a brief explanation: Pele is a beautiful Hawaiian deity who looks over the volcanoes of their islands while Kamapua'a is a handsome man who was maltreated by his stepfather so he deliberately made his face ugly and wore a pig mask.

With Volcanion around, it's not unlikely that we will have a... oh, my gosh, upon typing, it struck me. What if Pele and Kamapua'a are linked to Magearna and Volcanion? Idk. Back to the Pokemon at hand, with Volcanion around and Hawaii being the speculated inspiration for the next region, it's not impossible to have a Pokemon based on these Hawaiian legends!

Pele will be a Ground/Fire type or maybe a Fire/Psychic type while Kamapua'a will be a Dark type.

This is just a speculation and can be entirely wrong, but please take time to read and share your thoughts below!

I found something very interesting in a desperate attempt to find something related to the upcoming games just to tide me over until the games are released. Now I know that Hawaii and the other Polynesian islands as the setting of the next region hasn't been confirmed yet, but it will serve as one of the bases of this theory.

Anyway, let me start by discussing the very basis of this theory.

We might as well begin in the beginning (wink), "In the Beginning" is a Maori legend about the origins of the people of Polynesia.

The story revolves around the legendary lovers: Rangi (the father) and Papa (the mother) and their children. Rangi is the deity of sky while Papa is the deity of Earth. They were inseparable and were madly in love with each other that their children got fed up with them.

eFL30hX.png

They conceived several children. Among them are Tane, Tu, Tawhiri, Tangaroa, Haumia, and Rongo-- which I will discuss each of them further below. At some point in their lives, the brothers got fed up with the dark life between their parents so they decided to do something!

Tu (picture below), the deity of man and war, proposed that they should kill their parents! Interestingly enough, Tu kind of looks like Volcanion if you ask me-- at least the colors and being quadrupedal.

DSCF4158.JPG

His siblings had mixed reactions:

Tawhiri (the deity of wind and storms) disagreed.

Haumia (the deity of plants and vegetables) said that they should live things as they are. Haumia sort of looks like a Tiki idol and I would go so far as to say that it looks like the Strange Souvenir from the sixth gen games. Since this souvenir is said to be venerated by the people of their region, maybe it is connected to Haumia in a way since Haumia is their god of wild plants and vegetables-- a source of living.

Next are Rongo (the deity of cultivated plants) and Tangaroa (the deity of the seas) who agreed with Tu's plans.

Lastly, we have Tane (the guardian of the forests) who said, "Perhaps we can push them apart."

iU3y5n4.png

Then, they proceeded with their plan-- to kill Rangi.

Tangaroa tried lifting his father first, but she failed. Tu tried next but he couldn't even push his father aside. Looking at the pictures below, Tangaroa will make a perfect mermaid-like Pokemon while Tu still resembles Volcanion in some ways, at least for me.

DtNs6uH.png

Tawhiri who disagreed sadly watched her siblings do their stuff. Tane on the other hand tried to separate their parents by pushing them away from each other, but failed.

Am0TVEF.png

However, he had an idea so he laid down on his back and then straightened his legs!

s7HkIzG.png

Lo and behold! Rangi flew up in the air and light streamed in!

lAFkXa8.png

Tane then covered his mother Papa with flowers, trees, and birds and dressed his father Rangi with--get this--stars, clouds, rainbows, sun and moon! Thus, they got separated. Papa became mother earth while Rangi became the deity of the skies above!

Things went well with the siblings, too.

Tu became the deity of man and war who lived in the mountains.

Another interesting Maori legend is the hero Maui:

In Hawaiian mythology, Māui is a culture hero and ancient chief who appears in several different genealogies. He had several feats and among them are: a) he hauled up the Hawaiian islands and b) restrained the sun. The latter is very interesting considering one of the next main game is called Pokemon Sun!

Maui aimed to stop the sun from moving so fast. His mother Hina complains that her kapa (bark cloth) is unable to dry because the days are so short. Māui climbs to the mountain Hale-a-ka-lā (house of the sun) and lassoes the sun’s rays as the sun comes up, using a rope made from his sister's hair. The sun pleads for life and agrees that the days shall be long in summer and short in winter.

Watch this video about how Maui slowed down the sun:

That's all! :)

Sounds...interesting? It's certainly a theory, and I can see the legendaries being something similar to these legendary....lovers.

Though I have to ask, why would a deity of war be related to a Pokemon that's based off of steamworks?

Tane looks like Disgust.

If they're going to connect this story back to Zygarde and Volcanion, I hope they keep the Norwegian thing going. The lore doesn't HAVE to connect to the region's origins. In fact, if we're going off of XY, which take place in France and have Norwegian lore, then most likely a region based in Hawaii WON'T have Hawaiian lore.

I think the Ho-Oh/Lugia theory revolving around Megas would be really interesting. The two are clearly tied into sun and moon lore and, given GF's new tendency to re-vamp older ideas I don't see it being completely impossible. I think the only problem comes in the marketing of the games, a lot of people want to see brand-new Pokemon on front-covers... then again... if they completely nail mega-evolutions for the pair, what better way to get old and new fans interested?

Personally, I think they'll go for 2 new legendaries
Sun: fire/psychic or fairy
Moon: water/???

I'm hoping for a new eeveelution, obviously the logical choice for this is dragon type, be interesting to see how they make this work given the very feline appearance but I'm sure they can find a way
