I was wondering, what all do you really do at a Pokemon League? There's one at my local mall, and while I want to go I don't even really have a deck built yet. How casual is a Pokemon League? I yoyo, and yoyo club is just a place to trade tricks and yoyos, watch, learn, and chill. Is it like that, or is it more competitive? Like, can you just watch, trade, and learn or do you go just to test or play against others?

We take drugs, drink, have competitive nashville hot chicken fighting, you know, the usual.

In all seriousness though it generally is a casual environment where there could be a casual tournament with no/minimal prizes just for fun.

I better get my fowls ready.

But is it generally okay to come without a prepared deck?

Yeah. I believe my league leader used to have several decks that she would let some of the newer players borrow.

We do pretty much anything we want to at ours. It's like having a get together with friends, so whereas the games we play are competitive and we usually go there to test decks for tournaments or the next format et cetera, we go there to have fun more than anything else. Plus, most of the time, anyone is willing to help you build a deck by trading and even giving you cards to make your dream deck.

As for watching people play games, of course you can! You're well within your rights to observe a game, unless they ask you to leave. Only at a tournament are you infringing on their game if you sit and watch, and even then. Plus, if they ask you to move away, it's probably not a game you wanna watch anyway -- they're being a bit too stuck up about it, and it wouldn't be an entertaining thing to watch.

Also, don't worry about not having a deck; it's more common than you think. A lot of the people who come to our league are there for trading, playing the video game and hanging out with friends. Even so, at the league I go to, we even have some theme decks on hand that you can use if you don't have a deck, with the stipulation that you have to bring them back after you're done, much like our league's namesake: The Battle Factory.

Another newbie here, I really want to start going to my local league but I have a feeling it's all going to be young boys playing TCG/the video games and I would feel weird. (even though I'm in a college town, I still feel that way) What are usually your demographics at your leagues? I'm curious.

Edit: I'm a sophomore in college... female. FYI.

At the smaller league I attend, it's just me and a few other guys around my age (20s). We just play the game and shoot the sh... breeze. I started going to another league a couple towns over which has more in attendance, but it's all kids 16 and younger, and some parents. It gives me flashbacks of going to league 15 years ago because they're all my age when I first started playing, but it's also kind of awkward because I'm twice the age of most of them.

You can definitely go to league just to trade and hang out though, watch others play, etc. I'm sure most leagues have theme decks you can use to play with if you don't have a deck of your own.

We have everyone from little children to college students such as yourself! Even several women there, so it isn't just a boy's sport! Don't feel left out; you're probably going to fit right in! And besides, you'll never know until you try it for the first time. But I guess that's just part of the fun of it: Discovering something you didn't expect you would!

I'm just scared I'll show up and people will be like "what the heck who are you" hahah, I know I shouldn't be but whatever. Darn you anxiety!

At least I'll probably meet other players and possibly (acutally, probably) other players at my college!

No, its not like that at all. If the is someone going 'what the heck are you' then hs will be the one being told to get out. Its lots of fun, you make good friends and learn lots about the meta in your area. I really suggest giving it a go!

Nah, a lot of Pokemon players are nice and welcoming. I've run into a few jerks, but you'll have that anywhere you go. Just give it a shot! :)

Thanks for the help! I'll probably start going to my local league this summer once school is over and I'll have more time. :)

The sentiment has already been touched on quote a bit. But I wanted to reinforce that Leagues are for everybody. I advertise my League for old players, new players, kids and adults (anything in between too). And even of there is no spare decks for you to play with, you'll be able to find out which direction you should take to get in from everyone! :D

Lock'd due to Necrobumping. Even though that has been unapproved, I don't want other posts to spring up and make a zombie thread. Anyway, Bakudo Number One, Sai!
