What sets are legal and where can I find top decks?

RE: Hello guys! Newby Questions!

Thanks again guys! What exactly is a prime? I know I'm probably annoying you all like this lol xD. I'm sorry!

Also pulled both zekrom and reshirom also the kyogre combo cards today. That was pretty cool!

RE: Hello guys! Newby Questions!

primes are from the HGSS (HS) era
they are distingiushed by:
their silver holo border
spikey picture frame
close-up shot of the pokemon in dim lighting

they are basically great pokemon (hence the US translation PRIME)

RE: Hello guys! Newby Questions!

Cool! Well I've gotten a few primes already then! Ferraligator and scizor I think. :)

RE: Hello guys! Newby Questions!

The idea is that they're rarer and more powerful than would be typical of most Pokémon. No mechanics change.

Feraligatr and Scizor aren't bad. There are some better, some worse. If you get Yanmega, you'll be set ;P

RE: Hello guys! Newby Questions!

What would one fit scizor into? A metal deck or grass? I know he goes from grass to metal, so metal seems ideal?

Thanks for everyone's input!

i love new peoples questions xD

scizor could be its own deck. do 4 scizor prime and steelix and it should be pretty good. maybe 16 energy :D i know at first you will go ":O 4 SCIZOR PRIMES....I JUST GOT ONE" but that is where the league and trading comes in. trade things that you dont want for things that you do :D

Well I now have 3 scizor prime. Just luck I guess? Lol

Is steelix prime as well? What would I run with it? Obviously I need scythers, but would any other metal work for the other basics etc?

RE: Hello guys! Newby Questions!

The number one mistake new players make is expecting Pokémon of the same type to go well together in a deck. This is sometimes, but not always, the case. Don't look for Pokémon of the same type to go in the same deck, look for Pokémon that complement it well.

Scizor goes well with Zoruark (B/W)- Umbreon used to not be bad, but with the elimination of PokéPowers/PokéBodies, Umbreon's gotten a lot worse. You could also look for ideas in the deck garage– I'm sure some people have made decks around Scizor that may be good starting points. Scizor's not as good because of the release of Reshiram and Emboar, but it can still do alright. I wouldn't pair it with Steelix– I've never seen it done before, but I don't feel like they would pair well together. I think they belong in separate decks.

RE: Hello guys! Newby Questions!

Use skarmory from CoL or.. undaunted? well for one steel energy he can search out a steel energy (any so that includes specials) and attach it to one of your benched pokemon

>_> steelix and scizor and then a 1-1-1 klinklang...just send a scizor to do massive damage. then send steelix to tank and get the energy and move them to another scizor and then massive damage and so on :p

how does zoroark go with scizor?

dude yeah that's pretty sweet luck to get about enough to make a deck out of just from random pulls. I just got back from the U.S. nats and those were priced at 11 bucks a piece there. considering they'll probably drop a little after the tourny, they're still up around 10 bucks each. :) ballin'!

but anyway, considering you're new to the game and you already have 3 scizor primes, before trading them away, I'd suggest you make a deck around those just to get used to the game. and if you play it at league then you'll get a sense for what the other decks are so you can feel out what deck style you like playing (i.e. speed decks, donk decks, disruption decks, snipe decks, bulky/sturdy decks, etc.). also, this will give you the time to understand what cards are worth while watching other people trade what cards for what. you don't want to rush into trading your stuff to get cards of less value and/or end up with cards to make a deck type that you don't enjoy playing.

you're coming into this game at a good time because worlds is just around the corner meaning next year's season will be starting up in september. there will be battle rounds (like mini-tournaments to get you a feel for the tournament structure) then cities, then states, then regionals, then some more battle roads (last minute practice before the two huge tournaments), then nationals and back to worlds again. so no need to rush things. you've got a good couple of months before you would have to build your deck for the first tournament(s) (battle roads) which doesn't count as much as the other tournaments, so there isn't even a big pressure for you there. :)

in the mean time, check out the deck garage section of these forums for deck ideas from what other people are posting, and check out the "collector's gathering" section located on the top of the "TCG News & General Discussion" area for ideas of what cards are worth.

P.S. if you had not very many cards, Call of Legends would be a good set to go for. people hated it because it was mostly reprints, but that's why it's a good place to start: they're reprints of a lot of good cards that can go into many decks from previous sets. you could go there instead of trying to grab them from each set. but if you can cards already, then HGSS and B/W would be the best places to go for making your decks stronger, as well as triumphant as my third pick.

RE: Hello guys! Newby Questions!

CoL really isn't that good for general material. I'd go for HG/SS, since it provides most staples (popular cards that must be used in almost every deck, such as Collector or Communication), and it also has great Primes and other useful rares.

COL has shinies, which collectors want. It also has holo NRG's, which are also wanted...

It also has Pachi/Cleffa/several staple reprints.
