i am 8 and just started doing the tournaments at a local card shop near my house. Where can i get a list of legal cards and what series they are from

RE: i am new here and have a ?

The current legal card sets are:

HeartGold & SoulSilver and newer
Black Star Promos HGSS01 and newer
HGSS Trainer Kit (which also had its cards printed in other sets)

Any sets older than that (such as DP Arceus), or any older promo sets not listed (such as Rumble or POP series), are not legible for play in tournaments.
Older cards that were reprinted in newer sets are legal, but if the card was significantly changed, a reference for a newer card may be required (reference cards are kept outside your deck). For example, Potion, PlusPower, and Energy Retrieval all require a current reference (IF you are using older copies in your deck), but Switch and Super Scoop Up do not.

Basic Energy cards are always legal.

RE: i am new here and have a ?

how do i tell what set they are from someone gave me about 200 cards and not sure what sets they are from

RE: i am new here and have a ?

DNA pretty much said it all as he usually does. :D
Also, just because the illegal Night Maintenence will be reprinted as a legal Super Rod, it doesn't mean that you can use Night Maintenence. It has to have the same name and text. Same thing with Potion. It used to remove 2 damage counters, but now it's three.

The set will be identified by a small symbol in the bottom right hand corner. Basically, HGSS is a gold and silver icon, and Black and White is a checkered box. The others are kinda hard to describe, so I'll let DNA find a list of them. :p

You could always check the pokebeach main page for the scans on the side of the page. Get one card from each set and then you'll always have a reference for what sets are legal and you won't have to memorize them. Welcome to Pokebeach, by the way, I hope you have a good time!

HGSS

HGSS Unleashed

HGSS Undaunted

HGSS Triumphant

Call of Legends

Black and White

those are all the legal set symbols. we may be great friends. i dont capitalize either :p

I have a question regarding this. Are Pokemon League promos rotated out if the set they were from originally was rotated out?

I'm mainly referring to Expert Belt since I have a ton of the League promo ones.

Um, another thing you can do is check the date they were printed. Cards 2010 and 2011 are legal. All other are illegal (unless they have been reprinted). Thats what I say to people at my league when there is going to be a HS-on tournament, it it works for them.

Yes, they are. Expert Belt was from the Arceus set, and it went away along with the rotation. League promos carry the original set symbol it was from.
(This is analogous to last year - when the MD-on rotation came into effect, the Claydol and Roseanne's league promos became illegal in the modified format.)
