Where to start?

I played Pokemon back when it first came out. I have at least 2 of every card for generation 1 Pokemon cards.
Long story short my 8 year old son want's to start playing. This is just mainly for fun between friends and if the interest gets higher I might let him join some tournaments.

I see a lot has changed since I played last. Now the X,Y starter decks come out soon as well as the boosters. Should we wait for the new X,Y to come out or does one variation just build upon the other?
Seems a lot more complex with card varieties than when I played last.
This all seems so confusing to me.

Well even when X and Y come out. They will still use previous sets for a while, until enough sets come out to support decks on their own. That being said, the last 3 sets of plasma are most likely safe to pick up and wont be cycled out. Boundaries Cross is right before that and it probably will also be safe.

If its just for fun you can go and buy a theme deck or something. But it wont be very good on its own, it really matters what his friend are going to be using. If they are going to be making their own decks that may or may not be good. More investments on your part will be needed. Theme decks themselves are pretty terrible, but they are playable.

Anyway, you could go about this a few ways. Find out what pokemon your son wants to use, and then build a deck around that by buying singles or packs. Singles are probably the cheapest way (aside from Exs), but if you buy packs he can also trade with friends. Also it comes with code cards he can use on the pokemon trading card game online, to play there as well.

Another way is you can find a good cheap deck that is playable and fun. Something like the trubbish tool drop deck is really fun to play and is one of the cheapest decks to build that can still be competitive.

The last way i would suggest is to just buy a booster box of something with good Ex cards to build around, trade or buy singles to finish off that deck. Its what i did, though this is by far the most expensive way to go about it. But this also gives you/your son a lot of trade fodder and stuff to build other decks. I find this the most entertaining way, since you get to open a ton of packs. You are suppose to get at least 2 Ex cards per box, 1 full art, and 1-2 ace spec cards. I've gotten a box with that ratio of cards, as well as a box with 2 exs 3 full art exs and 2 ace specs. so it can be a fun activity you and your son can do together.

Thanks for the ideas. I think I will probably just buy a sealed box that way my son can open the packs and see what he gets. A whole box isn't too bad only about 90 dollars I think I can swing that. It seems to me I spent 10 times that amount on cards when I started years ago. I see they also have legendary treasures on presale right now. I might just pickup a box of that too. So plasma storm, plasma freeze or plasma is safe?
Thanks again for the help.

Yeah unless they pull a radical rotation like DP to HGSS plasma and most likely boundries crossed are safe . Also if you decide to get your son a little more competitive deck pick up a red genesect or 2 collection box you can get them in stores for $15-20 and each box come with 2 copies of pretty much all staples for competitive play and as a bonus all the cards in that collection are reverse foil so you/your sone can have a "cool " deck.

If hes going with a box, he might as well get the box first and see what he needs after. Booster boxes are just more fun to open than something like a preconstructed deck.

I couldn't help but notice all the plasma blast booster packs on ebay. I can't believe people are actually buying them for 4-6 dollars a pack. You can buy a whole box for 85 dollars. ($2.36/pack) It makes me wonder if I should buy a few boxes and put some up for sale.

idk about that. Shipping and what not may not be worth it. Plus it seems like it would be too hard to not open them.

I have 2 legendary treasures booster boxes on pre order. If I have enough cards out of the first box to make a deck I will probably just sell the packs.

You wont get everything you want to make a good and competitive deck, Fezwhy. Sadly that is, you might get most of it but be prepared to look to buy singles my friend!

My advice would be to get the Legendary Treasures booster box if you can, since it includes a good number of reprinted staple cards (Binanca, Double Colorless Energy, and Crushing Hammer). From what I saw at the prerelease I attended, the pull rate on EX cards is pretty good. And as it was mentioned above, you can always trade to get what you need (like Plasma cards depending on the deck, since I don't believe a lot of them were reintroduced in the set. I know I got a Lugia EX at prerelease, but couldn't use it because of the lack of Plasma Energy). Other staple cards for specific decks include Emolga, Ability Garbodor, Reshiram, Zekrom, and Ability Emboar. Plus the Empoleon released is pretty cool, as it allows for heavy strikes against Pokemon with more HP (meaning that it can swing against quite a few EX cards for 130 damage, for only 3 energy)

You are absolutely right about it. I pulled lots of ex from 1 box. The whole radiant set and almost a 2nd radiant set. I still have a 2nd box to open yet. I don't think I will need to buy a 3rd box. Lol
If you don't play pcgo lots of people are interested in the legendary treasures codes. I have had at least 5 people pm me this week wanting to trade for them.
