I couldn't make a longer title, so the extended title is "Which TCG theme deck is/was the biggest shelf warmer in your local mass market retail chain?" (Walmart, Target, Toyrus, Kmart, whatevermart).
I've been to wal-marts, 2 of them and at one point in time, Green Tornado was the biggest shelf warmer. Usually theme decks are hung on rods that protrude out from the back of the shelf right? I've seen Growth clash taking up 2 of those rods, with only 1 Ember Spark and a couple of Mind Floods, I have also seen a couple of Nightfalls as opposed to a rod full of Daybreaks.
Usually one rod holds 8 theme decks at max capacity, so, several months ago, when Emerging Powers was the newest set, I've seen 4 rods full of Green Tornados, along with Power play and Toxic tricks. There were no Red Frenzies, and 1 or 2 Blue Assaults.
Even today, that wal-mart is so overstocked with Green Tornados, that they are restocking them, almost a year after Black and White release, and of course they will never sell, since nobody likes Green Tornado, and the product looks tattered, as I feel that people wouldn't buy something from a ripped and tattered packaging.
I can't be certain, but just to ask, from Diamond and Pearl onwards, which theme deck from each set, that is you are to pick one of the 3, sold the least at your local mass market retailer? I want to make a correlation to least selling, and the inclusion of Grass energy, and it seems to be the case, as I can say from Platinum onwards, in my local area, these were the least selling, or they are still available even a few months ago.
Flourish
Cutting Edge
Overflow
Stormshaper and Flamemaster sold pretty much evenly
Growth Clash
Steel Sentinel
Daybreak
Verdant Frost
Recon
Green Tornado
Toxic Tricks
Fast Daze
Explosive Edge and Voltage Vortex are too new to provide any meaningful data.
Only 2 out of these don't have grass energy, where the other deck in the set has grass energy, even so, my reasoning why these decks didn't sell as well compared to the other deck in the set, was because players don't need any more grass energy than they already have. Another thing is, there are way too few decks that utilize lightning energy, from Diamond and Pearl to Call of Legends, we have these following decks:
Powerhouse
Polar Frost
Stormshaper
Ember Spark (sold like hotcakes)
Retort (sold better than Recon)
So basically any deck that oversaturates in one kind of energy, such as Grass, will not sell, as there was at least one deck that had grass energy, in each set, from all of Generation 4.
