Pokemon Why is Meloetta Genderless?

So it looks like a guy but is able to shift genders?

This has happened in the past too, although Meloetta does display seemingly more feminine qualities. You could say the same about Mew, Celebi, Manaphy, Possibly Suicune and others. It is just our perception of gender roles. What I do know is that Meloetta is based on orchestra music and ballet dancing (melody and pirouette). One would most likely think of a female dancer when told this. Perhaps Game Freak had their reasoning, but it is not clear at the moment.

Maybe they just meant that they were not going to make a statement by saying that men can't sing and dance but since it is genderless we should feel free to go ahead and just assume she's a girl because it is so obvious.

GF making a girl Pokemon that can sing and dance =/= GF saying males can't sing and dance. By that logic, the Hitmons (and more recently, Throh and Sawk) are making a statement that women can't fight.

Pokemon are monsters. Just because one kind of looks like a human that modern culture would stereotype as "feminine" does not mean it is a female being.
